The purpose of this study was to examine how seventh grade students responded to the oral reading of The Jazz Man (Weik). The researcher attended the four seventh grade language arts' classes in the Marion Independent School District, Marion, Iowa, and the twelve seventh grade language arts' classes in the Linn-Mar Community School District, Marion, Iowa, to read to and question the students. Students identified the adults with whom they live at home (their family structure) and then answered the question, "What do you think happened to Zeke (the main character in the story)?" 167 kindergarten, first and second graders at Garfield Elementary School in Boone, Iowa, and 470 first reader books were used to investigate whether justification can be given to shelving first reader books in a separate section. An increase in the number of charges of first reader books might demonstrate a need of students to have this type of material readily accessible.
The study was conducted over two 45 day cycles. During the first cycle, first reader books were identified, marked with a red dot and interfiled with picture books. A first reader section was created for the second cycle. All …

The purpose of the study was to analyze the content of children's and young adult fiction books which portray contemporary interracial families. A checklist was prepared to address how the structures of these families are being presented. Three hypotheses were rejected. The first hypothesis stated that the majority of the interracial families portrayed would include on African American and one caucasian parent. The data showed that only forty-one percent of the families fit that criterion. The third hypothesis stated that the majority of interracial families would encourage their children to accept both sides of their heritage. The data, however, showed …

The annotated bibliography contains a list of young adult fiction books in which the characters resolve an adolescent pregnancy situation. From the twenty-one books chosen for inclusion, twenty-three entries were made in the bibliography. Fourteen entries were found in the pregnancy resolution of keeping the child category, five entries ln the adoption category and four entries in the abortion category. The twenty-one books included in this study were published from 1973 through 1989 and were available in public or school libraries.

Our society perceives childhood as a time when children are happy and carefree, learning and growing. For many children, however, childhood is not carefree. In the national school population, 1.2 to 2.0 percent of the students are behavior disordered (Haring, 1987). "Behavior disorders" is used as a term rather than "emotional disabilities" because the State of Iowa has mandated the use of the former term.
This research focuses on the ways in which children's literature portrays the behavior-disordered child. Books with accurate descriptions of the behavior-disordered condition in children help adults and other children understand the disorders.

Burning Beauty: Violence And Splendor In The Writing Of Annie Dillard, Frederick David Hucke

After reviewing the criticism on Pulitzer Prize winning American author Annie Dillard's writing, I offer a close analysis of the imagery in these of Dillard's early works: Pilgrim at Tinker Creek (1974), Holy the Firm (1977), and Teaching a Stone to Talk (1982). The analysis reveals how Dillard employs oppositions to expose the contradictions inherent in nature and, therefore, in God. Each of the three chapters covers one volume. In Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Dillard's spiritual quest manifests itself in a study of nature. For Dillard, learning to see requires being prepared for visions of violence and horror as well …

The purpose of this study was to use content analysis to focus on the nature of traditional religious and spiritual elements in young adult fiction books.
Thirty-two books from ALA/s "Best of the Best Books 1966-1986" were read, and eight religious contexfs were checked. The findings revealed over one half of the books included moderate traditional religious contexts. About three fourths of the religious contexts were positive, but over one half of them were also negative. Most of the negatives were applied to religious workers and participants in religion. The one book which had strong religious context was totally negative. …

This researcher analyzed thirty-eight Caldecott and New York Time Choice of Best Illustrated Children's Books of the Year from 1985-1990 by means of a checklist to determine if 1) twice as many male characters will be pictured or refered to than females 2) female characters will exhibit twice as many passive traits than do male characters 3) male characters will be portrayed in three times as many careers 4) females will be shown twice as often in domestic/nurturing roles as males 5) male characters will be shown in twice as many instances caring for and protecting female characters than being …
