Modem society delights in the mismatched marriage. The most popular and wildly romantic tales trace the courtship of a pair that unites, repudiating any notions of fiscal or social inequality. In contemporary fiction, a prince can marry a commoner, and a man of wealth and prestige may attach himself to a maid, a waitress, or even a hooker. While this ability for romance to transcend class is commonplace in the popular culture of today, it is quite scarce in the literature of nineteenth century England. “Out From Gens Romulum Into The Weal-Kin”: Re-Locating Modernist Poetics In David Jones’ AnathéMata And Basil Bunting’S Briggflatts, Lucie Boukalova

In the decades following its publication in 1922, T.S. Eliot's Waste Land has become an epitome of the modernist sensibility and situation. This thesis challenges the poem's dominance and dictate over the canon of modernist poetry persisting in the academic discourse and general cultural awareness. Focusing on two post-WWII sequences by Eliot's younger contemporaries, David Jones' s Anathemata (1952) and Basil Bunting's Briggflatts (1966), this study explores alternative models and inspirative sources of the modernist poetic sequence. Through the constant comparison and contrast with Eliot's earlier articulation of the modern historico-cultural circumstance, Jones' and Bunting's specific foci and methods emerge …

(Un)Gendered Sentiments: The Relationship Between Modernism And Gender In The Works Of Barnfield And Woolf, Brittany Kay Jungck

By examining the history of literature through the lens of a gender critic, a person is able to discern how society and history frame our understanding of certain concepts. In this study, I have examined the lives and works of Richard Barnfield, a famed poet from the English Renaissance, and Virginia Woolf, a noted twentieth-century British novelist. The analysis of various aspects of Barnfield's and Woolf's creations reveals a connection between gendered language and modernity.

Michael Crichton's best-selling suspense novel Timeline combines futuristic science with medieval history, resulting in a remarkably successful and thrilling page-turner. By authoritatively blending academic arcana with fabricated scientific innovation, Crichton also convinces the average reader that the science in the novel is based on current scientific knowledge and that the medieval portions of the novel are based on solid historical research, which, for the most part, they are. Given the fantastic premise of the supposedly present-day science of quantum transportation between universes, one would expect the history-based sections of the book to have the stronger underpinnings. The paucity of details about secular theater in the fourteenth century allows Barry Unsworth to imagine what a troupe of players would look like if we could examine them right at the time when "a totally new form of drama was being born" (Unsworth, "Barry Unsworth on Fourteenth Century Life and Theatre"). In his novel Morality Play, he imagines poor, itinerant players competing with the large guilds that put on an entire cycle of plays with the backing of unlimited funds.
