This study was undertaken for the purpose of analyzing children's picture books to determine if specific moral conflict episodes could be identified, according to Lawrence Kohlberg's cognitive theory of moral development. The identification of conflict dilemmas was made by examining selected books for young readers to identify and isolate problems encountered by one or more characters. If conflict story incidents could be identified and described, it seemed probable that teachers could use them as a primary source for stimulating discussions about moral problem solving behaviors. As indicated in the title, the principal topic of this thesis is the concept of grammatical ambiguity. In this thesis, that concept and the concept of function switching rules are identified and defined. Examples of noun phrases from Japanese and English which exhibit grammatical ambiguity are analyzed. Examples of noun phrases in English which necessitate the formulation of function switching rules are provided and discussed. The study is conducted within a generative-transformational analytical framework. Non-generative studies germane to the topic are discussed. The bulk of the example sentences for Japanese come from non-generative sources.

This study showed that Lenora Mattingly Weber did not change the personalities of her characters over the twenty-six years. The characters had the same basic character traits in all of the fourteen novels in the Beany Malone series. Mrs. Weber included more minority characters in her later novels. The characters were stereotyped by their sexual roles throughout the fourteen novels.

Children associate with each other every day. They work, play, and have fun together in school church, organizations, recreation, etc. For many children much of this association is limited to others of their own race. How, then, do they learn to accept others of different races? How do they learn to work, play, and have fun with these children? For this research the author was concerned with the portrayal of males in literature; more specifically, the characterization of boys in children's books. The researcher wanted to find out if boys are represented realistically and if the characteristics of boys in fiction have changed over time. The books selected were fiction and the reading level ranged from fourth to sixth grade. The main character of each book was a male figure of approximately ten years of age. A creative project has been undertaken for a learning experience in order to better understand and appreciate past and contemporary works of fiction and attendant problems of fabulation for the ultimate purpose of improving guidance of students through literary studies. The project, a novel, demonstrates an attempt to dramatize part of the contemporary phenomenon of the individual's search for "self" within a family whose members rebel against or accommodate themselves to varying perceptions of authoritarian endoctrination and expectation. Using Mordecai Marcus's ''What Is an Initiation Story?" and R. W. B. Lewis's The American Adam to define the loss of innocence, this study follows the protagonists of three Robert Penn Warren novels-- Wilderness, World Enough and Time, and All the King's Men--through their steps from innocence to knowledge, initiation, or the loss of innocence. A similar pattern is seen in the lives of Adam Rosenzweig, Jeremiah Beaumont, and Jack Burden. It is time now to think, time to become conscious and to delve into a sample of Newbery winners. Four Newbery books were chosen for this study in an effort to compare the earlier winners, when sexism was not such a popular issue, with two current winners to discern whether a change had taken place, if indeed a change was necessary. The two older books are Invincible Louisa by Cornelia Meigs, the 1934 winner, and Thimble Summer by Elizabeth Enright, the 1939 winner. Tommy and the Cloud is an attempt to create an experience. It tells of a small boy's imagination, and his search for something more satisfying; than that provided by ordinary childhood.

This research was undertaken as a study of attitudes toward sex and sexuality materials and their availability and use in junior high media centers. Several basic assumptions were accepted before the study began. The first assumption: the Media Center best serves the school by maintaining a wide selection of media at different levels of ability and interest, and a large portion of these materials are selected to support the school's curricular objectives. The paper is two-fold in purpose. First, it will trace the historical and literary development of the junior novel from its inception to the present. In order to augment the literary development of the junior novel, it will also present a discussion of the criticism that has been made of the genre and also provide criteria for evaluating the literary quality of individual works. Second, it will present a selective, annotated bibliography of recent junior novels that deal with specific social problems of concern to the adolescent reader of today.

Jerzy Kosinski Is fourth novel, The Devil Tree, is widely regarded as both a technical and imaginative failure. Rather than being an artistic failure, The Devil Tree is in fact a fully mature and variant expression of Kosinski's art. Some of Kosinski's earlier fame was due to a humanistic misreading of his work. But The Devil Tree made it painfully clear that Kosinski 's own ethic-- particularly when concerned with self-realization - was of another order.
