Law And Its Limits: Ethical Issues In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein Or, The Modern Prometheus, David S. Caudill
Law And Its Limits: Ethical Issues In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein Or, The Modern Prometheus, David S. Caudill
St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics
The law and literature movement is frequently associated with the use of literary images of law as a point of reflection upon the ethical obligations of lawyers. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818)—the story of a young scientist whose unorthodox experiments end up creating the famed “monster”—is not, at first glance, a likely candidate for that enterprise. However, Dr. Frankenstein’s ambition and ruthless pursuit of knowledge has become a contemporary image of science out of control and the need for ethical limitations on scientific progress. Consequently, the novel raises currently important issues of regulating science and technology. Given the lawyer’s ethical obligation …

An Astrological Look Into H.P. Lovecraft’S “The Call Of Cthulhu:”A Celestial Telescope For Literary Analysis, Arianna C. Mayorga
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
University students often acquire a knowledge of a slew of literary criticisms for deeper exploration of compositions. Few, if any, literary criticisms can be applied with room for speculative scientific philosophical ways of thought. This brings the creative nature of analysis to a screeching halt– for what is more creative than a speculative-science? In this thesis I will give an introduction to key astrological ideologies. This paper will also work through how those ideologies could be applied analytically, academically, and professionally to literature. My aim will be to use one of H.P. Lovecraft’s main mystically- connotative works, “The Call of …

"Through Me Tell The Story": A New Historical Analysis Of Bob Dylan As A Nobel Laureate, Abby Mangel
"Through Me Tell The Story": A New Historical Analysis Of Bob Dylan As A Nobel Laureate, Abby Mangel
Dissertations
Bob Dylan's receipt of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016 for "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition" is perhaps the strongest validation for New Historicism as a method of literary analysis. The individual puzzle pieces of Dylan's postmodern rock poems are themselves little bits of history, but combined within the context of the massive paradigm shifts of the 1960s, they become something new and entirely relevant to the nonstop turmoil of contemporary life in America.

The Language Of Protest: Acts Of Performance, Identity, And Legitimation, Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill
The Language Of Protest: Acts Of Performance, Identity, And Legitimation, Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill
English Literature & Language Faculty Publications
Rooted in the performative of Speech Act Theory, this interdisciplinary study crafts a new model to compare the work we do with words when we protest: across genres (chants, songs, poetry, prose), from different geographies (Turkey, U.S., West Germany, Romania, Great Britain, Guatemala, Northern Ireland) and from different languages (Turkish, Spanish, English, German, Romanian, Ki’che’, Irish Gaeilge). This model generates two new concepts: pragmatic legitimacy, when a hearer recognizes a speech act, regardless of genre, as one of protest; and convocativity, the effect of convoking hearers into distinct camps, creating degrees of solidarity or distance on the protest issue.Framed by …

Digital Diagramming: Adapting A Tried And True Pedagogy To A Digital Environment, Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill
Digital Diagramming: Adapting A Tried And True Pedagogy To A Digital Environment, Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill
English Literature & Language Faculty Publications
With the move away from formal grammatical instruction in many US primary and secondary schools over the past thirty years, college writing teachers often find themselves dealing with student papers riddled with basic syntactic errors. Sentence diagramming, which requires students to parse a sentence into its most basic components, provides a method to assist students in mastering syntactic fundamentals. The following exercise adapts this old pedagogy of diagramming sentences to a new technology, Prezi presentation software, in the hopes of increasing student comprehension of writing basics. Diagramming sentences, whether one is familiar with the rocket, tree, or another diagramming process, …
