In Fantasies of Gender and the Witch in Feminist Theory and Literature, Justyna Sempruch analyzes contemporary representations of the “witch” as a locus for the cultural negotiation of genders. Sempruch revisits some of the most prominent traits in past and current perceptions in feminist scholarship of exclusion and difference. She examines a selection of twentieth-century US American, Canadian, and European narratives to reveal the continued political relevance of metaphors sustained in the archetype of the “witch” widely thought to belong to pop-cultural or folkloristic formulations of the past. Wyndham Lewis was one of the few early critics of Ulysses to see that, like Stephen Dedalus, Leopold Bloom is a Joycean self-portrait.1 Driven by his anti-Semitism, Lewis was irritated by the sympathy Joyce garnered by portraying himself as a Jew. In Time and Western Man, he complains that Bloom has too much dramatic power: As it is, of course, the author, thinly disguised as a middle-aged Jew tout (Mr. Leopold Bloom), wins the reader’s sympathy every time he appears; and he never is confronted with the less and less satisfactory Dedalus (in the beau role) without the latter losing …

The importance of primary source materials to scholarship is undeniable. Primary source materials can verify or contradict information accepted as true in history books and other secondary sources. They can tell the whole, or at least more complete, story of events. Unlike secondary sources, primary source materials offer first-hand accounts from the past, bringing history closer and making it feel more real. It can even be argued that primary source materials are less susceptible to the loss or misinterpretation of information over time in subsequent edition revisions. “New Words, New Everything”: Fragmentation And Trauma In Jean Rhys, Maren Linett

Jean Rhys’s novels present an intriguing case study for thinking about the status and meaning of fragmented text. With their polyvocal, nonlinear narration, often presented through interior monologues, novels such as Voyage in the Dark and Good Morning, Midnight exemplify modernist fragmentation while intimating a deeper sense of pain and loss than most accounts of such fragmentation acknowledge. In spite of the strong undertone of psychological damage it conveys, the fragmentary nature of Rhys’s writing is sometimes celebrated by critics as evidence of a subversive stance, either in Rhys or in her characters. This special issue, as its title suggests, considers some of the processes by which Jewish writers shaped literary modernism, and the intricate ways modernism was in turn shaped by its figurings of Jews and Jewishness. Although analysis of the political and aesthetic work Jewishness performs for modernist literature is beginning to make its way into studies of modernist negotiations with race, culture, and religion, it is still primarily seen as a side-topic within such inquiries, something to be explored only by those with a “special interest” in Jewish studies. The Jew In The Bath: Imperiled Imagination In Woolf's The Years, Maren Linett

Many of the earliest critical discussions of Virginia Woolf suppressed her antifascist politics and polemical feminism, charging her with elitism and a fondness for the ivory tower. In an effort to counter such a limited portrait, much “second-wave” feminist discourse since the mid-1970s has, conversely, celebrated Woolf’s progressive political views without spending sufficient energy interrogating their lacunae. In this essay I hope to join current efforts toward more nuanced inquiry into Woolf’s often conflicting and sometimes troubling political positions.1 In particular, this essay offers a corrective to a lingering critical reluctance to investigate Woolf’s antisemitism.2 Such reluctance may result in …

Constructing The Criollo Archive: Subjects Of Knowledge In The Bibliotheca Mexicana And The Rusticatio Mexicana, Antony Higgins

This book constitutes an attempt to theorize the process of the emergence, in eighteenth-century New Spain, of a position of intellectual subjectivity differentiated from that established by the regime of Spanish imperial authority. The principal concern has been to trace how certain groups of Criollo intellectuals try to construct such discourses, paradoxically, out of the framework of available European systems of knowledge and representation. In this fashion, it was sought to discern the outline of an ideological program for Criollo political and cultural hegemony in the eighteenth-century.

"The Wrong Material": Gender And Jewishness In Dorothy Richardson's Pilgrimage, Maren Linett

Much as James Joyce’s Ulysses uses Bloom’s Jewishness to help define Stephen’s progress toward artistic autonomy and exile, Dorothy Richardson’s autobiographical novel Pilgrimage relies on the figure of a Jew to reflect and shape its protagonist’s emotional and political concerns. Critics have recently begun to uncover the role that the Jew plays in this thirteen-part novel, noting the ways Miriam Henderson constructs her Englishness by means of comparison with the Jew, the extent to which her views are influenced by the anti-Semitic and misogynist Weininger, and the threat to her individuality which Miriam senses in her Jewish suitor.1 Missing from …
