Why even look at Politian, an unfinished failure? While it is true that Politian was a failure for its time and surely one of Poe's least successful attempts, it may improve on a stage with a more modern perspective. If not solely for examination of Poe's artistic effort, Politian also warrants a closer read due to its historical relevance by way of Beauchamp and Sharp. Poe, a most fastidious editor of his work, was ultimately required because of financial constraints to lay aside Politian in its unfinished state. As a result, the unedited Politian may provide insight into the writing …

Dwelling In Possibility: Aestheticizing Identity In African American Women's Fiction, Whitney Glockner
Dwelling In Possibility: Aestheticizing Identity In African American Women's Fiction, Whitney Glockner
Senior Scholar Papers
African American women writers define aesthetics through their negotiation of identity in the politicized loci of space, place and voice. In the balkanization of such issues of voice and space, we can see the ways that the emergent selfis embodied and aestheticized in literature. To do so creates a more tactile and "artfull" representation of the self rather than a representation of identity as a mere abstract concept. To use written language to express the self is to carry processes of selfdefinition for black women into the realm of creative production. For women, especially black women, who are a politically …

What We Bury: Poems And Epilogues, James Harry Nicholas Martin

The manuscript, What We Bury: Poems and Epilogue, consists of two major parts. The first is comprised of eighteen poems, selected from the thirty-two that I had written by the end of March. Included in the eighteen, in accordance with what I had stated to be one of my aims in undertaking this project, are three poems written out of inherited forms: two, "The October Wind," (p.22) and "Wandering By the Sea For the First Time," (p.23) are sonnets and one, "Brewster Station, "(p.10) is a sestina that in the final draft was broken. Also adhering to one of my …
Eugene O'Neill And The Hairy Ape: A Study In Background And Production, Susan A. Perry
Eugene O'Neill And The Hairy Ape: A Study In Background And Production, Susan A. Perry
Senior Scholar Papers
The following is an in-depth study of Eugene O'Neill: his life, his philosophy and his work as a dramatist. It tells of his early life, the various influences upon his thought and work, and his perception of man's place in society. A society from which O'Neill felt inexorably isolated. Although the paper deals with the complete body of O'Neill’s work, particular attention is given to The Hairy Ape and my interpretation of that work. An interpretation reached through a study of O'Neill's life and work, and through my own direction of The Hairy Ape which culminated in performances in February …

"Painting In Half-Light" And Other Poems, Jane Eklund
Senior Scholar Papers
Through the course of the year, I have been writing and revising poetry with a concern for the growth of my work. To that end, I took advantage of the time afforded me by the Senior Scholars Program not only to devote myself to writing, but to reading the poems of American, European and South American poets from the point of view of craft. Poets whose work has been important and influential in my writing this year include Pablo Neruda, Yannis Ritsos, Francis Jamroes, Charles Simic, Larry Levis and Pamela Stewart. The poems in my collection, "Painting in Half-Light" and …

Short Fiction Of Thomas Hardy: An Exploration And Assessment, Rebecca G. Peters
Short Fiction Of Thomas Hardy: An Exploration And Assessment, Rebecca G. Peters
Senior Scholar Papers
Hardy's novels and poetry have received extensive criticism, in due proportion to their merit. Hardy's short stories, however, have been virtually excluded from the annals of Hardy criticism, even though Hardy wrote over forty short stories, several of which are truly outstanding. In part, the reason for this neglect is because of the neglected state of the short story in Victorian England. Short fiction, published mainly only in periodicals and never collected in volume form, was obscured to a large extent by the highly popular serial novel. This thesis examines Thomas Hardy's short stories in the context of both the …
Spring Into Summer : A Novel, Jeff Wuorio
Spring Into Summer : A Novel, Jeff Wuorio
Senior Scholar Papers
Spring into Summer is a novel based on my experiences as a student living in London for a year. The central character, an American under-graduate student studying history, attempts to complete a piece of work by his older brother who is killed in a car accident several months prior to his brother's departure for England. The narrative traces the younger brother's efforts and eventual failure to work on the history; in so doing, he also fails to become more like his older brother whom he greatly loved and admired. Thus, a doppelganger, or "Double" of sorts is used.

Grotesque In Dickens, O. James Morgan
Senior Scholar Papers
Dickens's use of the grotesque in his novels undergoes a variety of changes. For convenience sake, and to better illustrate the developments of the grotesque, I divide the novels into three separate groups. The first group, the period of experiment, included the novels from Pickwick Papers through Barnaby Rudge; the second group, the period of transition, includes the novels from Martin Chuzzlewit through David Copperfield; and the third, the period of a new vision. included the novels from Bleak House through Edwin Drood. Basically, I see the development of the grotesque involving a change in Dickens's conceptions of society, as …
Eyes On The Branches: Poems, And An Essay On Contemporary Poetry, Richard Cass
Eyes On The Branches: Poems, And An Essay On Contemporary Poetry, Richard Cass
Senior Scholar Papers
The thirty poems collected here were written durin 1972-197. They begin as rather imagistic pieces, but the imagist tendencies are tempered with a preoccupation with the process of emotion. The poems progress through a middle period of finding a poetic voice by combining elements of other styles with the stylistic tendencies that rise out of myself. The subject matter is deliberately varied. The poems emerge, in the last few pieces, as the beginnings of a voice which combines a preoccupation with man in the unity of the world, the state of natural world and the nature of its retaliation for …

Miss Murphy's fifth grade students at Pleasant Street School enjoyed working on science projects which dealt with their favorite animals. It was suggested that the students bring in live animals, but after checking with the principal’s office Miss Murphy explained that th.1s was against the rules. The rest of the afternoon was uneventful. except that the teacher announced that she would not be in school the next day. After school, the students plotted to sneak in their pets the next day and trick the substitute teacher. Everything went smoothly, and each child told the class about his pet. The animals …
The Old Road, Dennis C. Gilbert
The Old Road, Dennis C. Gilbert
Senior Scholar Papers
The plot consists of the progression which the characters undergo. For the old man, the plot is his movement away from the earthly existence of the farm and into the physical process of the seasons. For the older grandson, it is the movement away from the past, symbolized by the farm, and into the present symbolized by his marriage and coupling with society. For the younger grandson, the movement is from childhood to the maturity which being alone demands in order for him to survive.
Blake And Yeats: A Comparative Study, Martin J. Gliserman
Blake And Yeats: A Comparative Study, Martin J. Gliserman
Senior Scholar Papers
Although my project began as a comparative study, it ended up as being the separate study of two poets. But even in approaching the poets separately, I have found that their points of views do come together at important places as I have shown in the final chapter (Blake and Yeats: Crossing Visions). The poets converge most strongly, from my point of view on the issue of sexuality. Both feel that a body-soul duality is a great reason for man's inhumanity to man.
Study In The Development Of English Satire In The Sixteenth Century, Vashti Boddie
Study In The Development Of English Satire In The Sixteenth Century, Vashti Boddie
Senior Scholar Papers
In the literary tradition of sixteenth-century England, a new mode of expression arose with the development of formal satire. The pattern branded off into two directions: that which followed the Piers Plowman tradition in the mid 1500's and that which followed the classical models of Horace and Juvenal in the last decade of the century. The latter phase led so inevitably to repercussions among literary and political circles that public authorities had to intervene to stop the flow of libelous satiric literature. Due to the controversial nature of the classical phase, it is this tradition which I shall concentrate on. …
