This volume of Northern Paiute texts is the result of continued collaborative relationships between members of several Northern Paiute (Western Numic; Uto-Aztecan) speech communities and two linguists who have nearly 30 years of combined experience working on the language. The resulting documentary resource provides varied samples of naturally occurring speech—narratives recorded and analyzed by the editors as part of their own fieldwork as well as materials recorded of earlier generations of speakers. In one case, materials from three generations of speakers from the same speech community are provided. By providing access in a single volume to previously inaccessible texts from …

The Myth Of Neutrality: Linguistic Influence In The Integration Of Nonbinary Identities In English And German, Zoe A. Philippou
The Myth Of Neutrality: Linguistic Influence In The Integration Of Nonbinary Identities In English And German, Zoe A. Philippou
Student Publications
Grammatical structures that differ among languages can affect the way people of different cultures think, speak, and behave. Because of its close ties with identity, language also has the ability to manipulate the way people view themselves and others. Ethnographic research among English and German speakers shows that these differing grammatical structures affect the integration into society of nonbinary, intersex, and agender individuals through a grammatical predisposition for gender neutral language. As such, the means of increasing social integration of these groups also differs between linguistic and cultural borders.

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: Edgar Allan Poe's Use Of Concealment, Alyssa Hubbard
Scholars Week
In his short stories “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Black Cat,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” Edgar Allan Poe uses the act and outcomes of concealment as a way to deal with guilt and introduce consequence. By examining each of these examples, we can see that how and where Poe's narrators hide the bodies of their victims directly impacts their mental health and how quickly their crimes are discovered.

Freedom Of Individuality And Country’S Independence In Byron And Chulpon's Works, Makhliyo Umarova Doctorate, An Associate Professor
Philology Matters
The article deals with the analysis of English poet Byron and Uzbek author Chulpon’s works and the theme of freedom described in them. The terms “freedom of individuality and “country’s independence” have been analyzed in both poets' works thoroughly. Romanticism is associated with the prominent figure of English literature – George Gordon Noel Lord Byron. Byron’s early political activities were more the result of propinquity and propriety than of any deep-felt enthusiasms. As Byron’s interest in political liberty refers both to personal and in abstract aspects, so his interest in social liberty concerns both individual and general relationships. So the …

Philology Matters
In emotional speech, human-specific linguistic, logical, and spiritual activities are interconnected, reflecting a unique process of verbal thinking in a unique way, which once again demonstrates that language is one of the means of moving not only the mind but also the psyche. In this sense, in linguistics, emotional speech is perceived as one of the distinct, distinctive linguistic, speech structures. Emotional speech expands with concepts and categories related to activities such as perception, cognition, comprehension, analysis as a linguistic and speech structure, one of the special syntactic devices, aimed at conveying emotional affect through linguistic, intonational and grammatical means. …

There are morphological, syntactic, semantic, accentic aspects of layout in the language corpus. The corpus is the most convenient means of observing the language fluctuation of the dictionary (neologism, istorism, archaism) and its material must be linguistically processed. The complex of tags is the main tool for the implementation of this linguistic process (analysis).
By monitoring the surroundings of this or that linguistic unit, it is possible to identify certain semantic characters that characterize this unity. The word may refer to a few semantic categories simultaneously, so it is important to consider the level of the word or the category …

The article considers the role of morphophonological elements such as stress, alternation of phonemes in the choice of suffixes in the deminutative word formation, and the nature of the relationship between them. Beauty For Ashes: Reflections On Aesthetic Experience And Suffering, Douglas Gilmour
Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice
In this essay, I examine the relationship between aesthetic experience and suffering, and I specifically explore how and why the former can potentially serve to meliorate the severity of the latter. Of course, that art and beauty can provide a certain measure of comfort and healing to the afflicted is a universally acknowledged truth; however, the reasons why this should be so could be considered an equally universal mystery. “I feel we understand too little about the psychology of loss,” writes Arthur Danto, “to understand why the creation of beauty is so fitting a way of marking it.” By exploring …

Free Battered Texas Women: Survivor-Advocates Organizing At The Crossroads Of Gendered Violence, Disability, And Incarceration, Cathy Marston Phd
Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice
This article recaps my symposium presentation, where I argue that feminist organizing strategies are central to healing our society and creating restorative justice from my perspective as a survivor of occupational injury, battering, and criminalization for self-defense. This includes the creation of Free Battered Texas Women. We prefer to think of ourselves as survivor-advocates who use a variety of tactics to empower ourselves, incarcerated battered women, and citizens. These strategies include pedagogy; poetry and other written forms; art; and legislative advocacy. I blend this grassroots activism with feminist disability theory, radical feminist theory, feminist ethnography, and feminist criminology.

The following paper represents work produced by a student in an Introduction to Criminal Justice course at Collin College. The paper is an objective analysis of prominent research regarding potential police biases and how officers’ decisions may be influenced by a suspect’s race. The topic of racial bias within policing is quite controversial, as evidenced by the community protests, media coverage, and destruction that has ensued after officer-involved shootings. This assignment asks students to objectively review scholarly research on police bias and constructively criticize …

Penggunaan Lakuan Tuturan Dalam Interaksi Semasa Kelas Bahasa Cina Peringkat Prasekolah, Yee Wah Lim
Student Works (2020-2029)
Colonial Trauma And Testimony In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein And Jamaica Kincaid’S Autobiography Of My Mother, Leana Rene
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will examine Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle to examine the colonial trauma and loss found in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Jamaica Kincaid’s Autobiography of My Mother, not just on a character level, but in a much larger colonial context. Some scholars have suggested that Shelley’s monster is a symbol of a colonized other (due to his appearance and certain features he has). Kincaid’s Xuela is for sure a colonized other because of the heritage of her mother. This thesis explores their abandonment by their creators as the abandonment of colonized nations from their colonizers. Even now, formerly colonized …
