Vilifying The Enemy: The Christian Right And The Novels Of Frank Peretti, Jay R. Howard Jan 1994

Vilifying The Enemy: The Christian Right And The Novels Of Frank Peretti, Jay R. Howard

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Peretti's novels provide a clear statement of the worldview of conservative Christians who hold the Bible to be literally true and without error. Not only is the reader presented with doctrinal positions, but the implications of those positions for life in modern society are spelled out as well. In this essay, I analyze Peretti's views of the modern world, its heroes and villains, and argue they are representative of the views of the New Christian Right (Liebman and Wuthnow) in the late 1980s and the 1990s.

Spiritual Autobiographies: Sacred And Secular Explorations Of The Self, Ellen Delacey-Hathaway Jan 1994

Spiritual Autobiographies: Sacred And Secular Explorations Of The Self, Ellen Delacey-Hathaway

Whittier Scholars Program

This project explains the contextual history of conversion and self discovery within literary and spiritual components. This research focuses on the exploration of the relationship of spiritual autobiography to secular autobiography and highlights any of the obvious or subtle differences between the two sub-genres. This study examines ideas presented in William James’ Varieties of Religious Experience and applying questions raised by James and other studies to demonstrate the essential similarities between secular and spirituality autobiography by showing threads of commonality between Henry Adams’ The Education of Henry Adams, Thomas Merton’s Seven Storey Mountain, and Saint Augustine’s Confessions.

Shared Lives: Women Who Wrote For Women, Andrea Kempf

Sabbatical Projects

The author studies the literature of Janet Lambert, Georgette Heyer, Francis Parkinson Keyes, and Inez Haynes Gillmore Irwin, and posits that frequent events within their works are not fantasy, but re-tellings of real experiences these authors lived.

Mongo Beti And Jean Marc Éla: Literary And Christian Liberation In Cameroon, John C. Hawley Jan 1994

Mongo Beti And Jean Marc Éla: Literary And Christian Liberation In Cameroon, John C. Hawley

English

In his fascinating study of contemporary African intellectuals and their struggle to set themselves apart from their European educations, K wame Anthony Appiah describes the intellectual ferment throughout the continent as producing "new, unpredictable fusions" because Africans "have the great advantage of having before [them] the European and American--and the Asian and Latin American--experiments with modernity to ponder as [they] make [their] choices" (134). Appiah uses the example of his own sister's wedding in Ghana to exemplify the hybridized role that religion continues to play in that self-definition. The ceremony followed the Methodist ritual; a Roman Catholic bishop offered the …

Race And The Selection Of Picture Books, Susan Schmitt

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the study was to investigate preference among kindergarten and second grade children's selection of picture books. Silky Ears And Secret Letters, Denise Larae Kuethe-Strudthoff

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this graduate project was for the writer to finish Silky Ears and Secret Letters, a chapter book for readers in grades three through seven. The main character in the story is Marcie Hargate, a sixth grader who does not fit in with her peers and who endures her classmates' taunting. Marcie's only friend is her basset hound, Rutherford. Rutherford is Marcie's confidante; and when she starts to receive letters signed by "Ghost Girl," the basset hound is the first to know. The letters from Ghost Girl worry Marcie because Ghost Girl often suggests in her letters that …

The Effect Of Booktalking On Fiction Circulation Statistics, Melinda J. Quinn Jan 1994

The Effect Of Booktalking On Fiction Circulation Statistics, Melinda J. Quinn

Graduate Research Papers

Five monthly booktalk programs were presented to the eighth grade reading classes at BGM School. Circulation statistics for first semester of 1992 when these students were in seventh grade were compared to the circulation statistics for the same semester of their eighth grade year in 1993 to determine if the booktalks made a significant difference in this group's reading habits.

An analysis of the data using the chi-square test indicated no significant difference at the .05 level in the circulation statistics for paperback books, hard bound books or total volumes. It seemed, though, that the students reacted positively to the …

The Effects Of Book Location On The Selection Of First Readers By Elementary Students, Tracy Merfeld Jan 1993

The Effects Of Book Location On The Selection Of First Readers By Elementary Students, Tracy Merfeld

Graduate Research Papers

167 kindergarten, first and second graders at Garfield Elementary School in Boone, Iowa, and 470 first reader books were used to investigate whether justification can be given to shelving first reader books in a separate section. An increase in the number of charges of first reader books might demonstrate a need of students to have this type of material readily accessible.

The study was conducted over two 45 day cycles. During the first cycle, first reader books were identified, marked with a red dot and interfiled with picture books. A first reader section was created for the second cycle. All …

The Lost Tribalism Of Years Gone By: Function & Variation In Gay Folklore In Armistead Maupin's Tales Of The City Novels, Jimmy Browning May 1992

The Lost Tribalism Of Years Gone By: Function & Variation In Gay Folklore In Armistead Maupin's Tales Of The City Novels, Jimmy Browning

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis intends to demonstrate that, because of the unusual circumstances of its writing - a semi-journalistic piece produced during a period of crisis in the real-life community fictionally depicted - Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City series stands as an unusually accurate and reliable ethnographic source for information concerning the gay male subculture of San Francisco in the late 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, not only the practice and behavior themselves, but also reflecting their personal and communal function. The methodology employed in demonstrating this thesis is necessarily subjective. Like gay folklore scholar Joseph P. Goodwin in More Man Than …

Zami: A Portrait Of An Artist As A Black Lesbian, Barbara Dibernard Sep 1991

Zami: A Portrait Of An Artist As A Black Lesbian, Barbara Dibernard

Department of English: Faculty Publications

As feminist critics, we cannot continue to ignore differences in race, sexuality, and class when we write about women; we should heed Adrienne Rich's critique of her own earlier work, that she will never again write of the "faceless, raceless, classless category of 'all women.'" Aware that my work will be partial and limited, I would like to explore Audre Lorde's Zami as a portrait of an artist as a black lesbian. In doing so, I hope to suggest areas where we must open up our conception of the female Kunstlerroman so that we are taking account of Lorde's black …

Zora Neale Hurston: The Voice Of The Goddess, Mella Davis Aug 1991

Zora Neale Hurston: The Voice Of The Goddess, Mella Davis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Zara Neale Purston has re-emerged as an author of promise due to the re-appraisal of her works led by Alice Walker and Robert Hemenway. In both literary and folklore academic circles, Hurston's work has been reclaimed by African-American female scholars and writers, but still a significant study has yet to be done about her ethnographic contributions to folklore and her farsightedness in fieldwork methodology. This thesis seeks to validate her work as a folklorist, thereby dismissing the charges of popularization and amateurishness by re-examining her work. Mules and Men and Jonah's Gourd Vine are Hurston's two most influential folklore texts …
