Footnoted Folklore: Robert Burns's "Hallowe'en", Corey E. Andrews
Studies in Scottish Literature
Examines Robert Burns's poem "Hallowe'en," first published in the Kilmarnock edition (1786), both in relation to its background in Scottish folklore and in terms of the way Burns presented it on the page, with numerous footnotes, arguing that "throughout the poem Burns acts as a participant observer in the classic anthropological sense."
Repair To The Lamps And Rake The Language, Daniel Malachuk
Repair To The Lamps And Rake The Language, Daniel Malachuk
Democracy & Education
Boatright and Faust rightly recommend Emerson’s active reading style, but they misrepresent him as pragmatist who believed readers to be “makers of meaning.” Emerson was a transcendentalist whose fundamental message was that moral “truth exists, though all men should deny it.” Especially in his antislavery writings, Emerson teaches two ways for readers to find (not make) these moral truths in the texts they read: by reading with their souls, or intuitively (“repairing to the lamps”), and by reading for the facts (“raking the language”) that will awaken moral sensibilities. Rather than continue to invent an Emerson who flatters our contemporary …
Science Fiction And The Myth Of Trajectory Evolution, Jocelyn D. Pickreign
Science Fiction And The Myth Of Trajectory Evolution, Jocelyn D. Pickreign
The Macalester Review
Stephen Jay Gould first proposed the idea of “iconographies of progress.” Today, one of the most prominent forms of progress iconography is the science fiction story. Science fiction as a genre frequently portrays evolution as a linear trajectory of increasing complexity, and in doing so, furthers a worldview that is not unlike the pre-Darwin understanding of human beings as both the center and the pinnacle of the natural world.

95th Connecticut College Commencement Address, Howard Gordon
Commencement Addresses
Emmy-winning television writer and producer Howard Gordon told the Class of 2013," The fictional characters I create live in the same crazy, complicated world as the rest of us. How they navigate through the world is what makes them compelling. How you navigate your way through the world is what will make your story compelling.”
The best way to do it, he told the Class of 2013, is to heed the sage words of advice printed on the poster in his office: “Work hard and be nice to people.”
He apologized for "what may sound like fortune-cookie philosophy," but said …

The Case Of Brown, Sara Ellingsworth
The Case Of Brown, Sara Ellingsworth
Colloquy Undergraduate Research Journal
The world is understood through the formation of categories, of defining what something is and what something is not, totalizing an experience, person, or word in order to come to an understanding of its essential meaning. Associations color one’s thoughts whether they are fully acknowledged or not. Without exploring the associations, accumulated through personal experience, that determine one’s view of another individual, there is a danger of marginalizing that person, instead of allowing them to fully inhabit their identity. In the following, I aim to expose the ways in which Richard Rodriguez uses Jacques Derrida’s concept of deconstruction as a …
Virginia Woolf & Michel Foucault: Methods Of Justice, Elizabeth K. Doré
Virginia Woolf & Michel Foucault: Methods Of Justice, Elizabeth K. Doré
Senior Honors Projects
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is primarily known today as a central British modernist novelist. In addition, she was also an important theorist of power, subjectivity, and ethics, especially as she turned her attention in the 1930s--as fascism spread and intensified across Europe--toward the public sphere in which European women were still then more or less without (easy) access. I read her late novels and essays alongside her diary in order to excavate the theoretical/political/ethical premises of her thought. I contend that she shares with the late thought of French philosopher Michel Foucault (1926-1984) an original conception of ethics. Woolf and Foucault’s …

Political Twittoric : The Rhetorical Use Of Twitter By The Obama 2012 Presidential Campaign, Kainat Najmi Abidi
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
With the entrance of the digital age, the Presidential campaign has begun accommodating the growing trend of new technologies. A campaign can reach an audience in person, on the radio, through the newspaper, on television, and on the Internet. In 2008, President Barack Obama broke the limitations of campaigning by going social, which he continued in his run for reelection in 2012. Obama tapped into the popular social network of Twitter to run a portion his 2012 campaign. By utilizing this new network, Obama’s campaign accessed the multimodal quality of Twitter to benefit their goal of winning the 2012 election …
Adult Realm V. Childhood: A Critical Examination Of The Victorian Realm’S Ideal Young Adult, Jewels White
Adult Realm V. Childhood: A Critical Examination Of The Victorian Realm’S Ideal Young Adult, Jewels White
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
Alice in Wonderland is a story that represents the cultural shift in Victorian ideas and its vision of childhood. The character of Alice represents an ideal Victorian youth, but her inabilities, confinement, and limitations in Wonderland suggest a culture clash and changing times. The story of Alice, through its puns, miscommunication, confusing mannerisms, and cultural disconnection between Alice and the inhabitants of Wonderland, preach a rejection of the Victorian adult realm. The novel itself provides an alternative for children to be children rather than obedient little adults.
My Life Examined & Tweaked, Shana-Kay Smith
My Life Examined & Tweaked, Shana-Kay Smith
Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies
My project is an exploration into my love of poetry. It consists of a collection of twenty-seven poems that I have written and revised over the course of a year. Over that time period, I have worked on approximately forty-five poems, but I chose only twenty seven for my final portfolio. To demonstrate what my writing process is like, I have kept a book (separate and apart from the final portfolio) of all my thoughts, inspirations, drafts and revisions for the poems I write, so that the growth of each can be seen.
The majority of my poems are in …
