Exalted And Debased: Psychological/Sexual Conflict As Bildungsroman In Half Of A Yellow Sun, Anne Lance
Exalted And Debased: Psychological/Sexual Conflict As Bildungsroman In Half Of A Yellow Sun, Anne Lance
Scholars Week
While many still view the Bildungsroman, novels of formation or coming of age stories, as the purview of stuffy formation novels like Dickens’ Great Expectations or Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, there is significant scholarship that suggests a recent revolution in the genre that centers women, people of color, and males in post-colonial or war-torn spaces.
My paper examines Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 2006 novel Half of a Yellow Sun as an example of a Bildungsroman through the focalization of one of the main characters, Ugwu, as he endures two psychologically conflicting sexual experiences, one …

North Sea Poems: Birds Of The North Sea, Caa'in, Summer Ferry, Lesley Harrison
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
These poems reflect the practical, human, immersive processes of self-orientation and self-location within the coastal and island landscapes round the North Sea. In both recording and bringing about this process, the poet maps herself onto her surroundings and brings her surroundings to bear on herself. The interplay of graphic, linguistic and other forms of description are destabilised by the contingency of their usefulness, and by their meaningless to each other. In the end, the generative poetic voice is the principle by which the 'map' is made.

“‘The Strata Of My History’: Reading The Ecological Chronotope In Wendell Berry’S That Distant Land”, Ellen M. Bayer
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
This article examines Wendell Berry’s short story collection, That Distant Land (2004) through the lens of the ecological chronotope. Berry’s characters cultivate an intimate relationship with their physical environment, and the land, in turn, inscribes their history within it. Furthermore, it is through a shared sense of responsibility to the land that the characters foster a sense of community, shared history, and timeless connection with each other. My analysis of Berry’s fiction employs the notion of the ecological chronotope as a lens for understanding the environmental implications encountered at the intersection between time and place in That Distant Land. …

Children's Literature As A Catalyst For Social Change, Lyndsey Reynolds
Children's Literature As A Catalyst For Social Change, Lyndsey Reynolds
Senior Theses
This thesis is the amalgamation of a creative writing project and an exploration of the ways that children’s literature influences and draws from social justice causes. It started after reading Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls and realizing that children’s books are not as simple as I remember them being. This book inspired me to consider the power of children’s literature to push young readers to be aware of and thoughtfully engaged with political, social and cultural conversations. The first phase of my thesis was exploring the relationship between social justice and children’s books by reading scholarly materials. In these …
Diversity In Ya: A Look At How Book Description Language Talks About Race, Brittney Finato
Diversity In Ya: A Look At How Book Description Language Talks About Race, Brittney Finato
Book Publishing Final Research Papers
When exploring young adult literature, it is specifically important to research racial diversity because it can help show particular stereotypes, biases, and tropes that may be used in YA overall. This helps inform current issues or excellencies in the canon and leads to broader discussions about the importance of racial, and other, diversity in books generally. By developing methods to isolate racially diverse books in YA, extracting specific language from their Goodreads copy, and talking broadly about overall themes, I will analyze the types of language that book descriptions use when talking about race, if they do at all.

Why Do You Want To Teach? Interpreting Stem Pre-Service Teachers' Motivations Through A Semantic Lens, Delaney Holt
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This qualitative study sought to examine the relationship between the motivational profiles that pushed undergraduate STEM pre-service teachers (N = 181) to enter the teaching profession and the word choice used to articulate those motivations. Through the application of a semantically-analytical lens, this study aimed to uncover preliminary patterns that could predict STEM pre-service teachers’ overall commitment levels to the completion of the STEM education major and overall certification. Written responses to the question “Why did you want to become a teacher?” were gathered from a longitudinal survey administered from spring 2011 to fall 2016 as part of the Knowing …

Speaking For The Grotesques: The Historical Articulation Of The Disabled Body In The Archive, Violet Marie Strawderman
Speaking For The Grotesques: The Historical Articulation Of The Disabled Body In The Archive, Violet Marie Strawderman
English Theses & Dissertations
This project examines the ways in which the disabled body is constructed and produced in larger society, via the creation of and interaction with (and through) the archive. The archive, for the purposes of this project, is defined by scholars such as Jacques Derrida and Carolyn Steedman. It is a place where information is stored and documented, but through this process, history and power are also created and maintained. In order to properly examine the ways the archive helps shape the understanding of the disabled body and experience, I use three case studies: Richard III, Caliban and Joseph Merrick. Each …

Language Attitudes Of Writing Center Consultants: Perception And Expectation, Benjamin John Sparks
Masters Theses
This master’s thesis explores the results of research into the language attitudes of peer consultants working in a writing center at a large regional public university in the American Midwest. A survey was administered to writing center staff in which they were asked to evaluate the sociopolitical relationship between standard and nonstandard English dialects, the perceived relative grammaticality of these dialects, and the traditional concept of appropriateness in academic writing. Also included were questions pertaining to how consultants manage the practical responsibilities of their positions and the expectations of students and professors with the writing center’s stated policy of linguistic …

Comparative Study Of Phraseological Units With Naming Features In Nonrelated Languages, Marjona Radjabova Researcher
Philology Matters
In the world linguistics several researches on the theory of phraseological units have been carried out and they are still in the process because phraseological units are formed on the basis of traditions which have been strengthening along with the development of society and the relationships between nations. Particularly, researching phraseological units carrying onomastic features in comparison with other systems of languages puts forward one of the topical tasks for modern linguistics. The following article is devoted to the study of the features of phraseological units with onomastic features in the English, Russian and Uzbek languages as well as creating …

An Anthropocentric Metaphor In The System Of A Linguistic World Picture, Gulshan Nasrullayeva Researcher
Philology Matters
The article describes the existence of a particular person in any language, defines the national-ethnic characteristics of a person’s perception. Consequently, the language scene in the universe must be understood and accepted not as a photograph, but as a drawing. Thus, an objective view of the universe is estimated according to the law of relativity. The concept of the national type, its concept, its knowledge, its status, character, purpose and position. The various paradigms, trends, directions, and flow are growing in the social and human sciences, especially in linguistics. This is determined by the accelerating pace of globalization in social …

Thematic Classification Of Religiously-Marked Phraseological Units, Nargiza Wahedi Teacher
Philology Matters
The article deals with a thematic analysis of religiously-marked phraseological units (RMPU) that reflect Religious World Picture (RWP), an inseparable constituent of both conceptual and linguistic world pictures. The selection of phraseological units is premised by two criterions, namely, etymological aspect and the presence of a religious component. Throughout data collection process in the focus of our interest have been only phraseological units that etymologically can be traced back to the Bible and phraseological units with religious components that bear semantic reference to religious entities.
