The tradition of global disasters in literature is long-standing and David Mitchell contributes to that discussion. For him, the possibility of political, social, and environmental collapse is imminent based on patterns he traced throughout human history. One common thread Mitchell weaves throughout his works is the presence and the relevance of the apocalyptic. In his best known work, Cloud Atlas, Mitchell explores the cyclical trends of humanity across time and space, including the recurrence of predacity, cruelty, and systematic oppression. : Although creative writing entered undergraduate curricula in the 20^th century primarily as a way to teach literature, the range of current programming suggests that original intent has evolved, as has opinion among faculty and writers about the nature of creative writing as a subject and its role within English programs. This study applies content analysis to 271 creative writing program learning outcomes (PLOs) from 51 undergraduate programs across the US in order to identify prevailing patterns and themes related to creative writing as a teaching subject. In this paper, I argue that it would be pedagogically useful to investigate the psychological processes which lead readers to like and dislike texts, and I offer an initial set of hypotheses on the pleasures of reading which can be gleaned from Roland Barthes’s short monograph, The Pleasure of the Text. I begin by briefly addressing the origins of this research before I discuss the concept of writing “expertise” as it has been conceptualized by other fields of writing research. As a qualitative action research study, the purpose of The Writing for Healing and Transformation Project was to facilitate more inclusive writing strategies and to promote individual and collective healing on issues of social suffering and oppression (Kleinman, Das, & Lock, 1997; Pennebaker & Smyth, 2016) for diverse students at a community college located in the northeastern United States. The 18 participants in the study included students in my English II literature and composition course. I cannot make this story come out right. I walked in and he was dead. Dead is dead. Nothing I said or did at that moment could change a single thing. I could wish it; I could regret it. Around 360 BC, Plato wrote his two famous dialogue books, Timaeus and Critias, which provide detailed descriptions about Atlantis. The existence of this island remains a big question for many researchers as well as many ordinary people. The ongoing interest about Atlantis, has resulted in the filming of a famous Walt Disney animated movie in 2001 under the name of “Atlantis: The Lost Empire.”
