Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Nick Joaquin characterized himself as a “devil’s advocate” for taking contrarian positions in Philippine cultural history. His early essay “ La Naval de Manila” is taken as an example of such. A re-examination of the essay within its original context of the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, however, reveals that Joaquin’s early historical imagination must be understood less as an act of rebellion and more as a product of negotiation. It navigates multiple audiences and overlapping empires—the Spanish past it venerates, the American period whose language it uses, and the Japanese present that enabled its publication. While they might seem counterintuitive to traditional concepts of “luxury,” collaborations between luxury and anime brands are a growing pattern reflecting the growth of both industries for key demographics. This paper argues that luxury brands use these collaborations to establish brand relevance and cultural connection while also positioning themselves advantageously against other brands in an increasingly social and online environment. Through a qualitative and quantitative content analysis of Instagram posts and user comments from Studio Ghibli and the Spanish luxury brand Loewe regarding their three product collaborations, we argue that there is a significant amount of room for differentiation in …

本論文聚焦於莫言長篇小說《紅高粱家族》中男性角色，特別是核心人物余佔鰲的形象建構，探討其在「尋根文學」脈絡下的民族認同與文化身份再現。作為中國當代文學中尋根潮流的重要代表，莫言通過現代敘事策略重新審視歷史與個體身份。《紅高粱家族》以強烈的民間敘事色彩與語言張力，揭示個體生命與家國命運的緊密聯繫，並透過男性角色的敘事視角提供了對民族文化精神的深入反思。

本文首先從尋根文學與民族認同理論出發，探討其與男性敘事之間的關聯，並分析莫言如何通過對高密東北鄉文化的書寫，將「尋根」視為對傳統文化的回溯與現代民族身份的重構。其次，文章將深入分析余佔鰲在小說中的行動模式與文化象徵，探討其與土地、高粱、暴力與戰爭等元素的深層互動，如何展現出一種原始而激烈的陽剛生命力，進而成為民族精神與歷史記憶的承載者。

本研究旨在補足現有莫言作品研究中偏重女性角色與母權書寫的視角，強調男性角色在尋根敘事中作為文化主體的重要性。透過對文本的細讀與文化符號的深入分析，本文試圖揭示《紅高粱家族》如何在尋根文學框架中展現民族認同與文化身份的建構，並進一步探討莫言如何透過男性角色的形象塑造，對當代文化及民族認同的多重性與其轉型過程進行深層反思與詮釋。

此研究聚焦邱妙津的《鱷魚手記》與珍奈．溫特森的《柳橙不是唯一的水果》，並以女性主義與酷兒理論為分析框架，探討女同志群體的生命經驗及其挑戰異性戀文化規範的方式。文中探討兩個核心問題：其一，作者為何選擇自傳式小說作為「現身」的形式；其二，「現身」對作者及女同志群體的意義。研究方法包括文本細讀及符號學理論的應用。

研究指出，在各自的文化背景影響之下，《鱷魚手記》批判台灣社會中的恐同風氣，並反思媒體獵奇報導的傷害；而《柳橙不是唯一的水果》則解構基督教文化中二元性傳統對女性與同志的壓迫，並展示身份探索的多元可能性。這兩部作品皆通過自傳式小說隱匿作者身份，創造安全的發聲空間，兼具個人療愈與社會運動的意義。文本中隱含的寓言故事則呈現兩位作者對性別、身份、社會規範與文化壓迫所進行的反思，同時賦予文本更多樣化的敘事風格。

This article responds to the question, “What is eighteenth-century fiction?” with a focus on Chinese fiction. It begins with an overview of eighteenth-century Chinese fiction and a deeper reading of the explicit metafictionality of China’s most famous eighteenth-century novel, Story of the Stone (also known as Dream of the Red Chamber). Then it critically interrogates the assumed equivalency between the English term fiction and the Chinese term xiaoshuo through a historical overview of the unequal literary and linguistic engagements between Europe and China. This collection consists of three photograph albums documenting Rubie K. Lee's work with the Methodist Church’s Women's Missionary Council (WMC) in Korea from the 1920s through the early 1930s. The photographs depict Korea under Japanese rule, showcasing its people and landscapes. Albums also contains photographs of the Ogeechee River flood of 1929, as well as an extensive collection of color postcards from Lee’s travels to Korea, Japan and China.

Japan has been facing fertility decline over the past several decades. Indeed, this decline constitutes a severe demographic crisis due to its birth rates falling to record lows year after year. Low birth rates have been correlated with economic and societal instability. 戲曲之情感寄托：夢境幻象與天仙謫降——葉小紈《鴛鴦夢》探析, Chung Nga Sin

《鴛鴦夢》由葉小紈（字蕙綢，1613-1657）創作，為中國戲曲史上現存最早由女性劇作家創作的作品。同代著名劇作家沈自徵盛讚它為「補閨閣所未有」，肯定了它在女性戲曲史上開創先河的成就。目前對於《鴛鴦夢》的研究均從葉小紈的生平背景出發，分析劇本中所表現的「姐妹情誼」，並以「女性劇作」的角度給予評價。然而，拋開了對葉小紈「第一位女性劇作家」的濾鏡，《鴛鴦夢》的作品本身仍然有很多可以討論的空間，本文嘗試回歸文本本身，探索《鴛鴦夢》是否還有未盡之處，重新審視《鴛鴦夢》在中國戲曲史的所在之位。

本文以「夢境書寫」與「謫仙敘事」為雙主軸，突破性別視角的單一框架，回歸文本內部結構分析，重新定位《鴛鴦夢》在戲曲史與文學傳統中的意義。在「夢境」敘事方面，劇中通過「以情補夢」的敘事轉向，將短暫現世昇華為情感的永恆性。又延續了了前的「謫仙」敘事，提出了「情證」敘事，角色將情感體驗轉化為力量，支撐他們達成從「短暫」到「永恆」的轉變。

The evolution of institutions in selecting government officials in ancient China reflected efficiency considerations and increased power concentration in the hands of the ruler. Selecting government officials in ancient China became more rule‐based over time, and standardisation and centralisation were some key features of this process. In this dynamic model, a higher volume of transactions, shown as the number of candidates needed to be evaluated, leads to institutionalisation, which has a higher fixed cost but a lower marginal cost in processing each transaction. In the steady state, a ruler with a more encompassing interest chooses a higher level of institutionalisation. …

How geography affects the choice of institutions is studied in a theoretical model. In this model, nations are located around a circle. Rulers compete through choosing tax rates, the level of military spending, and the degree of formality of institutions. Geographic condition is captured by population density. It is shown that societies with higher population densities choose lower tax rates, establish more formal institutions, and give government officials lower levels of autonomies than those with lower population densities do. Glossed Over is a collection of interdisciplinary artworks exploring my Korean-American diasporic identity and how gender, queerness, religion, neurodivergence, and internet culture intersect within that experience. Through a blend of painting, woodworking, and sculpture, this installation carries the various elements of undefinable 한 (pronounced: han), a concept I attempt to define and contextualize in the Introduction and throughout this thesis. This thesis explores the everyday social integration experiences of Russian women married to Korean men and living in urban South Korea. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Everyday Multiculturalism and Multicultural Space Making, the study investigates how cultural differences are negotiated in daily life through practices such as language use, food preparation, parenting, household routines and everyday social interactions.
