Jean-François Millet, a French painter in the 19th century, was first introduced to China via New Youth (1919) as a representative of "Ibsenism". Millet was so influential in Chinese literary circles of the 1920s that he played a key role in the aesthetic enlightenment in parallel with the evolution of new literature. Millet's seeding in Chinese literary field witnessed the shifts from the "Renaissance" spiritual pursuit to the self-consciousness of the literary form, and from the construction of pure literature to the birth of artistic subjects in the late 1920s. Chinese language teachers grow with certain characteristics in their professional development. Knowing these characteristics can reveal a teacher’s developmental needs which can inform the teachers and the teacher development facilitators. This case study examines the professional development of one Chinese language teacher that works in a high school in the United States. The Five-Stage Theory is employed to direct the examination of the teacher’s growing path. Findings cover the challenges, efforts to cope with the changes, successes, and failures.

This paper outlines Liùshū 六書 interpretations of Chinese character etymology to help co-create a better approach for educators in supporting character literacy development in students of the East Asian languages that utilize Chinese writing. Learners’ Perspectives On A Long-Term Tandem Chinese Language Partner Program, Jun Xu

Tandem language learning is important in enhancing learners’ language proficiency and fostering cultural knowledge. However, learners’ perspectives on tandem learning programs have received little attention, and no research exists concerning learners’ perspectives on long-term tandem language learning. Based on an anonymous online survey, this article examines how learners perceive a face-to-face tandem Chinese language partner program after participation for three years. The results indicate that, whereas the participants acknowledge the benefits of the participation of the language partner program, they identify challenges regarding logistics and task design. The implications of the findings are also discussed.

This study scrutinizes the Chinese characters in two reference works compiled as part of two projects: the Graded list and the EBCL list. Situated in the character-based theory, the characters compiled in both are examined in depth from the perspective of character complexity, character structure, semantic and phonetic radical transparency, frequency of character and frequency of word formation. The results show that the two lists share similarities in terms of distribution of characters of different structures, level of semantic radical transparency, and frequencies of character and word formation. This article addresses conflicts over local beliefs in both discourse and practice in contemporary China, especially in the process of protecting local beliefs as China’s national intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in the twenty-first century. These local beliefs were stigmatized as “feudal superstitions” in revolution- ary China and were revived in public since the reform era started in 1978. With influence from UNESCO, the project to protect ICH has spread all over China since 2004, and many local beliefs are promoted as China’s national ICH. Kanji are ideograms, a morphographic system borrowed from the Chinese language and used in Japanese writing. 2,136 kanji are used in the average Japanese newspaper, required for academic certification and for expat job placement. A qualitative study was conducted to observe the optimum methods to learn and acquire kanji. Japanese native speakers who were educated by the Japanese school system grades 1 through 12 are classified as L1 or first language speakers. American students, L2 or second language speakers, must have been educated in the American education system grades 1-12. 也斯與葉輝寫過大量關於城市的書寫，關注度也很高，然而他們的自然書寫則鮮有人去討論、分析，及至本土的自然書寫也出現同樣情況。其實，本土的自然書寫並非新奇事，早在三十年代，就有人以生物學的角度描寫香港的自然，歷史不比城市文學短。

自然書寫作為一種對土地和生態的記錄，其中蘊藏著有與城市共同，也有與城市不同的意識，故此本文首先會將本土自然書寫的發展脈絡梳理，再以吳明益揉合外國理論所得，對於自然書寫的準則分析香港自然書寫的發展方向，再透過香港的「浮城」觀，解讀兩代作家在自然書寫中展露的傾向，最後就藉這個傾向，來看浮城的未來。

The question of possible moral conflict between commitment to family and to impartiality is particularly relevant to traditional Confucian thought, given the importance of familial bonds in that tradition. Classical Confucian ethics also appears to lack any developed theoretical commitment to impartiality as a regulative ideal and a standpoint for ethical judgment, or to universal equality. The Confucian prioritizing of family has prompted criticism of Confucian ethics, and doubts about its continuing relevance in China and beyond. To understand the details of Li Zehou’s work, it is helpful to first locate it within the social and historical contexts to which Li was responding. Specifically, his work can be understood as a contribution to the struggle to establish the intellectual foundations of a Chinese modernity. As China transitioned away from the long-lived dynastic system that had ended early in the twentieth century, there was intense debate in China about what forms of social and political order should take its place. 小說主要描述成長於傳統家庭的年輕人靜兒面對爺爺死亡的心理變化與成長。她的家人自其從小就紛爭不斷，她的愛恨分明與敏感的性格使其成長後盡量逃離家人。如成長後，她選擇在大學宿舍安然度過幾年光陰，更一度去了外國交流。而在其往外國交流前，爺爺在家附近的街市罹難。家人出於傳統的死亡禁忌，以及想保護孩子不被傷害的本意，再也禁止提及有關爺爺死亡的事。在道教儀式下舉行的葬禮，同時令靜兒感到衝擊，對爺爺感到陌生。有關他的死亡很快地發生，又很快地以這樣的方式完結，她感到可怕。這一切致使靜兒不能面對他的死亡，把爺爺從生活的記憶裡抹除。然而她經常出現自己遇車禍的輕度妄想，也不斷質疑自己的冷血。在男朋友的陪伴和影響下，她嘗試主動面對爺爺的死亡，在未來的生命中不斷發掘爺爺真實的樣子。同時，當她接受了曾經傷害她的爺爺，她認為自己也能面對到其他家人。最後她回家去，看見滿有瑕疵家人也有軟弱的一面，她的心態開始變化，不再逃避。

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has received plaudits from international press and organizations for their handling of the COVID-19 crisis, with some describing it as a win for China in terms of propaganda. In this essay, I explore an alternative view: That the CCP is responsible for the origin and extent of the pandemic, and that much of their perceived altruism is carefully disguised opportunism and propaganda. Facts are drawn from scholarly work and the popular press to support my arguments. This essay carries strong implications for interpretation of recent events.

Gentrification has been extensively studied beyond Euro-American societies. In particular, previous research of Seoul’s residential gentrification has broadened our understanding of the role of the developmental state and property speculation in urban clearance and renewal. However, little attention has been paid to the contemporary retail gentrification in Seoul that has different aesthetics, subjectivities, and rhythms compared to residential gentrification. In retail gentrification, old urban neighborhoods are no longer demolished but cherished with their nostalgic landscapes and atmospheres. Given name is a cultural component that reflects family life. The present study is a literature-based research on newborn baby naming practice in Japan from 1912-2018. Based on existing literatures on naming, examples and surveys on given names, an overview of a naming pattern in Japan is presented and discussed within a sociocultural framework. Historical observations of baby names include popular female and male names and their recent trends. The study also shows that in Japan computerization has changed learning method, information transmission method and communication modes, and that digital natives name their children in different ways than older generations.

女性聲音在中國古代詩詞文學中，無疑是相對稀有卻不容忽視的一部份。女性在古代中國的時代背景中，一直處於男尊女卑的壓迫之下，她們的視野和話語都與男性存在著較大的差異，這使她們的作品中反映出與普遍男性文學不一樣的筆觸、情感、甚至世界觀，具有重要的研究價值。

宋代女詩人朱淑真以斷腸詩詞聞名於世，素來對其作品的討論和批評皆以當中數量最多的愛情詩詞為主。然而，朱淑真詩詞的題材遠不止於情愛感傷，她作為古代女性跳脫傳統框架，以超前的眼界關心當時社會人情同時，也表現出她的廣闊胸懷和獨立自主的個性。本論文的目的是透過分析朱淑真的詩詞，關注其愛情與非愛情題材兩類作品中的主體情感關懷，研究斷腸詩詞如何體現出她對生命的體悟以及精神層面的追求，擴大對其作品的觀照和評論範圍，嘗試對詩人本身的成就作出較全面、豐富的解讀。

春秋既是禮樂崩壞的紛亂時代，亦是個重建社會秩序，充滿無限可能的時代。在後世森嚴的道德規條下，婦女爲人處事或以三從四德一言蔽之，而春秋時期的女性在相對自由的社會狀態下有更多可塑性。從《春秋》敘事書法可見君子以及世人對當時人事的看法，左傳所釋《春秋》書法更時有獨立評論，由此可窺探當時的婦女之義。本文以「春秋婦女之義」爲題，從《春秋》、《春秋左傳》、《春秋公羊傳》及《春秋穀梁傳》之敘事筆法，微言大義爲對象，以宋伯姬、息媯、秦穆姬爲例，管窺當時婦女之義。

《春秋》及其三傳記錄不少婦女事蹟，通過對不同事件的記載與否、事件剪裁及評論等，所表現的故事不同，呈現出的婦女之義亦有異同。《春秋》、《公羊》、《穀梁》都把焦點集中在婦女自身的言行是否合禮儀，以顯示其婦義。而《左傳》則重視後果，以大局爲重，當中可見其欲婦女求生，而非倡其殉節而死。因爲婦女顧全大局行事比起捨生取義更難得。一死了之容易，能堅守婦義及帶來正面的政治影響較難。縱婦女當以守禮全節爲婦義，然而大是大非前當竭力倡揚正道，這是《左傳》中特別的婦女之義。其通過着筆局勢大事，呈現婦女對政局的影響，更看重婦女與時事的聯繫以及影響。因此，《左傳》體現之婦義之標準和內涵更廣闊多樣。

淺論小說《悟空傳》的反抗意識, Lok Ting Cheng

《悟空傳》是一本由網絡作家今何在於二千年寫成，共二十章的中短篇網絡小說，作品面世後隨即因其風格突破創新而廣受讀者青睞。二零零一年正式出版成書，後來經歷多次加印再版，並被改編成由郭子健執導的同名電影《悟空傳》，可見此作的文學價值和地位廣受認可。電影二零一七年上映至今，原著小說《悟空傳》亦因而受到更多的目光注視，研究此作及改編電影的論文漫山遍野，惟那些論題多集中探討《悟空傳》電影及小說之異同，鮮少論及原著小説《悟空傳》本身的文學價值，而在各大論壇上提及小說《悟空傳》的文章則只是簡單概述小說內容、將人物故事線分開陳述或單單對情節安排作出猜測，猜測內容的同時並無引用任何學說或理論以加強合理性，引致其中某些猜測顯得異想天開，故這類文章只能顯示《悟空傳》一書受到大眾熱烈的討論，並不算是正式的研究。

有見及此，本論文將從兩個方向入手分析小說《悟空傳》的反抗意識，首先指出孫悟空一角於前文本及現文本中反抗形象之流變，再從英雄形象及二心（妄心與本心）角度說明《悟空傳》對前文本的顛覆，然後從現文本與現實的關係著手，印證小說提出對神佛崇拜及社會的再思考，以證《悟空傳》文學價值之所在。

英國漢學家與中國學者對《九歌》研究之異同 : 以韋利和霍克斯的著作為中心, Shuet Ying Chu

西方漢學家對於中國典籍的研究在19世紀末20世紀初開始，當時西方漢學越發興盛，中國古典翻譯與解讀成爲焦點。其中，楚辭作爲辭賦之祖，以其獨特的魅力得到了學者的青睞，西方漢學家對於楚辭的研究主要有幾個方面：文本分析、文化探源和文獻考據。

英國漢學家，亞瑟‧韋利（Arthur Waley, 1889-1966）與大衛‧霍克斯（David Hawkes, 1923- 2009）先後對《楚辭》進行了深入的研究，他們采取的主要方向就是文化探源。《楚辭》在戰國楚地發源，當時巫風盛行，不少西方學者都從宗教文化的角度對其進行研究，韋利和霍克斯亦在此列。兩人的著作為海外楚辭學提供了完善的譯本，後世不少漢學家皆采用霍克斯的英譯本作研究，推動了海外楚辭學的整體發展。

然而，國内對於海外楚辭學的研究甚少，中國楚辭學專著似乎也較少提及兩位，在中國知網搜索「海外楚辭」，只出現了8條相關結果，可見前人對於海外楚辭學的研究仍有不足。中國與西方的學術環境不一，學者所采用的研究角度和方法也有很大區別，單以《楚辭》研究而言，中國學者更擅長站在中國文學史的角度，對《楚辭》的淵源以及對中國文學所帶來的影響進行研究，而歐美學界，以韋利和霍克斯為例，更熱衷於探尋《楚辭》中蘊含的文化和中國特色，並從宗教文化的角度對其進行剖析，他們對《楚辭》的認識明顯與中國學者有差異之處。

有見及此，本文透過解讀韋利和霍克斯的著作，針對其中對於《楚辭九歌》的性質、篇數和作者等問題，與中國現有楚辭學的學説，比較兩者異同，找出西方學者一些值得借鑒的觀點和想法，希望能為中國的《九歌》研究提供新的啓發。
