On The Classification And Significance Of Poetry By Elegant Ladies In The Ming And Qing Dynasties, Qingxiu Song Jan 2019

On The Classification And Significance Of Poetry By Elegant Ladies In The Ming And Qing Dynasties, Qingxiu Song

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Poetry by elegant ladies can be divided into three basic literary types, namely, Poetry by poetesses, by talented women, and by bluestockings. Poetry by poetesses is the most noteworthy group in the history of women's literature and has important literary value; Poetry by talented women is widely circulated in society because of authors' outstanding talent or legendary romance. Poetry by bluestocking takes over the important task of traditional poetics, emphasizing that "poetry is for conveying the truth". Therefore, the social value of this type of poems are greater than its literary value. By interpreting these three basic types, this article …

Poetic Art And Virtue: Plato On Ancient Greek Poets, Zhimeng Lin Jan 2019

Poetic Art And Virtue: Plato On Ancient Greek Poets, Zhimeng Lin

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Whereas the Greek poet Tyrtaeus especially values the virtue of courage in external war, Theogonis emphasizes virtues in civil war. There is an interaction between poets and legislators. But Plato thinks that when constructing political systems, the primary purpose of legislators should not be victory in war and the corresponding virtue to it. Both poets and legislators frequently refer to pleasure and pain, two basic characters of human beings. So both poetry-making and legislation should not merely aim at training people to restrain their pains or trying to please the most, but more important at cultivating people to conquer pleasures …

State-Oriented Essays And "Author" Consciousness: Discourse Construction Of The Original Literary Criticism Of "A Discourse On Literature", Yuelin Zhang, Yang Yang Jan 2019

State-Oriented Essays And "Author" Consciousness: Discourse Construction Of The Original Literary Criticism Of "A Discourse On Literature", Yuelin Zhang, Yang Yang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

"Literary self-consciousness" and "literary unconsciousness" were not issues that Cao Pi had realized, yet when contemporary people offer their critique of Cao Pi's literary views from these perspectives, there emerge such problems as "fitting Chinese cases into Western discourse", "interpreting ancient literature with contemporary ideas" and "fragmentation". In terms of literary discourse construction in the time of Jian'an, Cao Pi's "A Discourse on Literature" was the discourse construction of original literary criticism from the perspective of "state-oriented essays" and the discussion axis of "author consciousness", which was a total literary project based on national consciousness. Its concepts of "literary spirit", …

Su Shi's Temple-Visiting Poems And The Progression Of His Chan Enlightenment: With An Additional Discussion Of Three Types Of Northern Song Literati's Temple-Visiting Poetry, Shunchen Li, Chang Gao Jan 2019

Su Shi's Temple-Visiting Poems And The Progression Of His Chan Enlightenment: With An Additional Discussion Of Three Types Of Northern Song Literati's Temple-Visiting Poetry, Shunchen Li, Chang Gao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Su Shi travelled extensively in China, with his particular interest in visiting temples. During his exiled and relegated periods, he composed a number of temple-visiting poems in places such as Fengxiang, Hangzhou, Huangzhou, and Lingnan. These poems manifest themselves in different literary tastes and aesthetic characteristics. They not only represent Su Shi's progress of Chan enlightenment but also embody the three paradigms of Northern Song literati's temple-visiting poetry, namely, realistic delineation of scenery, elaboration of truth and description of heart, and seeing the nature of mind.

The Deep Path In Foucault's Critique Of Reason And Its Enlightenments For Post-Theory, Yang Liu Jan 2019

The Deep Path In Foucault's Critique Of Reason And Its Enlightenments For Post-Theory, Yang Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In Foucault's early research on madness history which contains four stages, the path of reason repressing non-reason gradually transformed the connotation of non-reason from being "arational" to "irrational" in a subtle manner. The former is not being rational, but is compatible with complete reason. The latter is not being rational either and resists reason in the narrow sense, namely rationality. This path was strengthened in his later study which focused on Kant's idea of enlightenment and thus led to the thought of eventalization. Theory has pushed this process forward. This thesis presents an extended explanation of this important issue, and …

The Evolution Of Narration And Lyricism And Changes In Five-Character Poetry, Han Li Jan 2019

The Evolution Of Narration And Lyricism And Changes In Five-Character Poetry, Han Li

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Because of the birth of five-character poetry at the end of the Han dynasty, the folk yuefu narrative poetry led the trend and produced many excellent story poems. When literati five-character poetry rose, lyricism gradually overwhelmed narration. With their cultural training and knowledge cultivation, literati brought poetry and prose as well as embellishments into lyricism; as a consequence, rhetoric gradually emerged as a central element of poetry. As the emotional strength of lyric poetry decreased, literary grace became prominent. In the Jin dynasties and the Southern dynasties, both the narrative and emotional aspects of poetry further weakened, whereas a flowery …

The Extension Of Value In Literary Classics: A Case Study Of Mark Twain's "Running For Governor", Lili Liu Jan 2019

The Extension Of Value In Literary Classics: A Case Study Of Mark Twain's "Running For Governor", Lili Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Based on the priority of "internal value" in the genesis of a text's value, this article studies the extension of value in literary classics and its pattern. As can be seen in the Chinese translation of Mark Twain's "Running for Governor" and its diachronic generation of meaning, a regular pattern of meaning generation in literary classics can be found via dialectic discussion: literary classics always release their "internal value" in accordance with the authors' ideal appeal and "initial readers'" pursuits, which lays the foundation for subsequent extension of meaning. Furthermore, this article has found, during the extension of value in …

The Material Return Of Cultural Studies: Culture And Society From The Perspective Of Tony Bennett's Governmentality, Xiaoxia Xu Jan 2019

The Material Return Of Cultural Studies: Culture And Society From The Perspective Of Tony Bennett's Governmentality, Xiaoxia Xu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Tony Bennett has established systematic theories and methodologies on the New Materialism from the perspective of governmentality, which, however, is often neglected by scholars. Based on intensive reading of relevant textual contents and conceptual interpretation, the article deeply and comprehensively investigates Bennett's New Materialism with dialectical analysis and reflection. It argues that Bennett has boldly assimilated the Actor-network Theory by the French post-structuralist sociologist Latour and others when recontextualizing, from the governmentality perspective, society, culture and their relationships. In this process, Bennett developed the idea of Assembling Culture to underscore the dynamic material generating process of culture and the social, …

The Naissance Of Dystopia, Rourou Zhao Jan 2019

The Naissance Of Dystopia, Rourou Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Dystopia is one of the most critical narratives of the popular culture. To some extent, it is beyond interpretation because of its definition: it is well known that dystopia refers to a bad place while utopia means a good place; that is, dystopia is a negative utopia. But if we look into the works that are called dystopias, it is obvious that they do not simply disavow what utopias insist. They also deal with various theses like feminism, post-humanism, modernity, etc. This paper focuses on the emergence of dystopia from the beginning and tries to analyze its discursive formation.

Three Dimensions Of Ecological Aesthetics: Félix Guattari's Thought Of "The Three Ecologies", Huiqing Zhang Jan 2019

Three Dimensions Of Ecological Aesthetics: Félix Guattari's Thought Of "The Three Ecologies", Huiqing Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Based on the real context of human-nature relation in the epoch of the Anthropocene and the thought of ecosophy in the ethico-aesthetic paradigm, Félix Guattari's thought of "The Three Ecologies" leads to the theoretical transformation of ecological aesthetics from environmental ecological dimension in a narrow sense to a generalized ecological model composed of environmental, social and mental ecological dimensions. Based on environmental ecosophy, the environmental ecological dimension follows the machinic aesthetic paradigm and serves the purpose of presenting the natural process and ecological justice for all species. Based on social ecosophy, the social ecological dimension follows the group Eros principle …

Why To Be Popular, How To Be Classic: An Analysis Of The Evaluation Function Of Media For Modern Chinese Popular Literature From The Perspective Of Market Operation, Juan Shi Jan 2019

Why To Be Popular, How To Be Classic: An Analysis Of The Evaluation Function Of Media For Modern Chinese Popular Literature From The Perspective Of Market Operation, Juan Shi

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Modern Chinese popular literature was influenced by the market, which thus differed from the New-vernacular literature in its standard of evaluation. By studying its production and consumption mechanism, it was evident that marketing operation connected all aspects for modern popular literature to become canonized. To study all issues of popular literature's evaluation from this perspective, we could return to the original historical context and systematically organize and understand all kinds of related issues (such as problems, ideas and incidents, etc.) of popular literature, which could be seen as a new methodology. A reflection of the role media played in the …

"Establishing Xiang To Fully Express Idea" And Chinese Aesthetic Culture, Dakang Ma Nov 2018

"Establishing Xiang To Fully Express Idea" And Chinese Aesthetic Culture, Dakang Ma

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

"Daxiang (great image)" and "Xiangwang (beings without trace)" are a state of "Non-Objectivity". Through imitation and imagination, the relationship between human and nature is transformed from object relationship to non-object relationship, which ultimately leads to human understanding of "Tao". This is the meaning of "establishing Xiang to fully express idea". "Yixiang (image)", "Yijing (ideo-mood-imagery)" and "Jingjie (state or realm)" are the fields composed of "Xiang" and "Daxiang", which can be called "Xiang-Daxiang". "Xiang-Daxiang" is the cell of the Chinese aesthetic culture and it produces the unique character of Chinese aesthetic culture, and also determines the unique way of thinking and …

Aesthetics Of Translocality And Crossmediality In Isaac Julien's Ten Thousand Waves, Yingjin Zhang Nov 2018

Aesthetics Of Translocality And Crossmediality In Isaac Julien's Ten Thousand Waves, Yingjin Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This article examines translocality and crossmediality as new developments in cinema and visual studies. Isaac Julien's 9-screen video installation Ten Thousand Waves (2010) represents a migratory aesthetics based on translocal evocation, crossmedial interaction, and mobile spectatorship. As Julien reconstructs the legend of Mazu and memories of Shanghai in radically different modes (e. g., the idyllic versus the phantasmagoric, the nostalgic versus the post-nostalgic), their screen images and sounds enter a constant circulation and produce intriguing multi-directional, multi-spatial, and multi-temporal dissonance/resonances across different media and genres — cinema, art photography, video installation, police rescue footage, calligraphy, poetry, painting, and star performance. …

Formal Aesthetics Of Ballads: Ideas Of Literary Language In The Chinese Ballad Campaign, Chengzhu Cao Nov 2018

Formal Aesthetics Of Ballads: Ideas Of Literary Language In The Chinese Ballad Campaign, Chengzhu Cao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Although the language of ballad seems simple and unadorned, its specific formal skills and overall idea of form run through the whole text, where its important literary value lies. It not only has a set of internal formal rules, but also shows a close association with daily spoken language, dialect, and ancient Chinese poetry. Therefore, what is worthy to learn for the New Literature is not wonderful words or sentences in a ballad, or its simple and natural language style or strong feelings expressed for ordinary people, but its formal rules. These rules not only provide useful reference and nourishment …

History In Round Numbers: Why One Hundred?, Prendergast Christopher Nov 2018

History In Round Numbers: Why One Hundred?, Prendergast Christopher

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This article is about the practice of dividing historical and literary-historical time into units of 100 years, with a particular focus on the semantics of the French term "siècle". It examines how in the course of what we now call the seventeenth century the term "siècle" shifted in meaning from "age" or "epoch" to the round number 100. It contextualizes the shift with reference to the great Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns, while also reflecting on the implications and consequences of a counterfactual alternative to modern historical chronology.

Meanings And Relationship Among "Dao-De-Sheng-Wen" In "Yuan Dao" Of Literary Mind And The Carving Of Dragons, Kai Li, Yong Miu Nov 2018

Meanings And Relationship Among "Dao-De-Sheng-Wen" In "Yuan Dao" Of Literary Mind And The Carving Of Dragons, Kai Li, Yong Miu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

By perusing the text of "Yuan Dao" (tracing the origin to the Dao) with relevant theories of Chinese and Western philosophy, this article reviews different interpretations of "Dao" and their insufficiencies. It reinterprets the meanings of "Dao" and analyzes difference and connection between "Dao" in "Yuan Dao" and that in Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Another focus of this article is the reasons why Liu Xie esteems Confucius as a saint and Laozi a sage, and why he extols Confucian classics and Dao De Jing. Through the above analysis, the article expounds the meanings and relationship among "dao-de-sheng-wen" in "Yuan Dao".

The Literati Purport Of Jiazhuan And Theoretical Reflection On Its Ideas Of "Using Literature As Play", Xiaoju Huang, Weiguo Zhao Nov 2018

The Literati Purport Of Jiazhuan And Theoretical Reflection On Its Ideas Of "Using Literature As Play", Xiaoju Huang, Weiguo Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

A relatively independent type of ancient Chinese prose, jiazhuan was biographies written anthropomorphically for objects. Han Yu's Biography of Mao Ying written in the Tang dynasty marked the beginning of jiazhuan, followed by numerous parodies in the Song and Ming dynasties. Such prose, written by the literati at leisure for entertainment, embodied their refined aesthetic taste. This article argues that jiazhuan was an expression in the form of games, which displayed writers' talent. Thus perceived, just like "writing is for conveying truth", "using literature as play" became an important and necessary literary stance for the literati to divert themselves from …

The Tradition Of "Good Writing" And The Narrative Of Ming-Qing Marvel Tales, Cui He Nov 2018

The Tradition Of "Good Writing" And The Narrative Of Ming-Qing Marvel Tales, Cui He

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The pursuit of "good writing" is a long and profound tradition among Chinese literati, who demonstrate their talent, knowledge and accomplishment by writing various types of literary works. Among them, the unique Ming-Qing marvel tales as a kind of ancient Chinese drama mostly represent national characters. However, as the marvel tale is a narrative art, there must be certain tension between the "good writing" tradition and the drama narrative, which is reflected in both speeches and songs. Songs, often desktop-oriented, tend to be conventionalized and detached from or even in conflict with characters. Speeches are often used for characters' opening …

A Study Of Remarks On Prose In The Ming Dynasty And The Construction Of Prose Theory From The Viewpoint Of The Modern Times, Zongjie Gong Nov 2018

A Study Of Remarks On Prose In The Ming Dynasty And The Construction Of Prose Theory From The Viewpoint Of The Modern Times, Zongjie Gong

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Remarks on prose provide significant resources for the prose theory of ancient China. In recent years, with the publication of Chinese scholar Wang Shuizhao's Remarks on Prose through the Ages and the progress in the construction of ancient prose theory, the collation and study of remarks on prose of each dynasty has attracted greater attention. As for the works of the Ming dynasty, the study of which is still in a primary stage presently, the re-evaluation of their historical status and theoretical contributions, along with literature survey, is the premise for its further development. Based on this, and from a …

A Review Of Yan'S, Bao's And The Xies' Poetry And Fang Hui's Poetics Of The Six Dynasties, Houjun Zhao Nov 2018

A Review Of Yan'S, Bao's And The Xies' Poetry And Fang Hui's Poetics Of The Six Dynasties, Houjun Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

A Review of Yan's, Bao's and the Xies' Poetry was written in Fang Hui's old age, which contains his views on the literature of the Six Dynasties. In his review, Fang Hui adopted the Jian'an Style and Jian'an Flavor as the criteria. Jian'an poetry excelled in the poetic style featuring the classic style of qiyun (aura) and wild abandon with strong and vigorous emotions, which were derived from the conviction that verses written in simple style are better than parallel sentences. Besides, writers preferred expressing emotions than depicting scenery. In these aspects, Yan's, Bao's and the Xies' poetry were not …

Explicating The "Meaning Triad" In Lady Welby's Significs, Feng Sun, Youxiang Tu Nov 2018

Explicating The "Meaning Triad" In Lady Welby's Significs, Feng Sun, Youxiang Tu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The purpose of this paper is to explore why the "Meaning Triad" becomes the core concept of the Significs, and reaches the following conclusions: the "Meaning Triad" is the basic theory of Significs, which, as the science of meaning, is the basis of the extension of the Significs's "translative-interpretive" process, the premise that makes the Significs evolved into "the philosophy of Significance", the crux that makes the Significs to restore the link between "mother-sense" and "father-reason", the epitome of the Significs's thinking manner, and the central doctrine of signific education. Assisted by the concept of the "Meaning Triad", Lady Welby's …

International Politics Of Literary Theory: A Study Of Western Theory As Doctrines And A Discipline, Jinghua Lin Nov 2018

International Politics Of Literary Theory: A Study Of Western Theory As Doctrines And A Discipline, Jinghua Lin

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The event of the publication of René Wellek and Austin Warren's Theory of Literature (1949) signals that European literary criticism was transformed rapidly into literary theory by American scholars. To be more specific, from then on, British New Criticism that emphasized close reading was replaced by American New Criticism that valorized analysis of semantic structure, and Russian formalism was rediscovered and reactivated in this process. Afterwards, more theoretical schools sprang up, such as semiotics, structuralism, hermeneutics, post-structuralism, deconstructionism, and so on. And along with the scientific literary theory, many other theories, like Western Marxist criticism, feminism, gender studies, new historicism, …

Shakespeare's "World History": J. G. Herder's "Sturm Und Drang" Drama Theory And The Radical Enlightenment, Qing Feng Nov 2018

Shakespeare's "World History": J. G. Herder's "Sturm Und Drang" Drama Theory And The Radical Enlightenment, Qing Feng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Influenced by Johann Gottfried Herder and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the German "Sturm und Drang" movement regarded William Shakespeare as a model of gifted drama poets. Viewing Shakespeare as a "genius" in imagination for the possible "world history", Herder applied pantheistic philosophy to his drama theory and developed a concept of radical enlightenment. Comparing Herder's view with Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's interpretation of Shakespeare as well as his Aristotelian enlightenment dramatic idea, a great difference can be revealed: Lessing aimed to cultivate civic morality, while Herder intended to evoke the Volk's passion towards freedom and political action.

Was Plato An Art Denier?: Plato's Concept Of Technē (Art) And The Pre-Socratic Philosophy Term Of Phusis (Nature), Dehui Yin Nov 2018

Was Plato An Art Denier?: Plato's Concept Of Technē (Art) And The Pre-Socratic Philosophy Term Of Phusis (Nature), Dehui Yin

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Since philosophy term technē in ancient Greece is not exactly the same as the concept of art today, it is inaccurate to say that Plato was for or against art, but, at the same time. Plato actually opposed some kind of technē (mainly poetry and painting), and the influence of this stance remained even today. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify which kind of technē Plato exactly opposed. In ancient Greece, it was Plato who firstly proposed technē as a philosophy term on the basis of Pre-Socratic philosophy. So his thought of technē must relate itself to the thought of …

"Qin Virtue" And "Wenxin": Innovation Of Ji Kang's "Qin Fu" Based On Tradition And Its Impact, Zhanyun Song Nov 2018

"Qin Virtue" And "Wenxin": Innovation Of Ji Kang's "Qin Fu" Based On Tradition And Its Impact, Zhanyun Song

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Based on the classic vocabulary of music fu's creative mode in the Han dynasty, Ji Kang's "Qin Fu" integrated the parallel prose and the argumentation into the work of the fu. Ji Kang gave yaqin metaphysical description, thus bringing the qin culture a richer content. He proposed a qin ethics of "peace virtue", which was an innovation based on the music theory tradition of the pre-Qin and Han dynasties. Ji Kang's "Qin Fu" reversed the trend of sadness beauty in the Han dynasty, and reinstated the idea of harmony from traditional Confucian music theory; it dispensed with the Confucian qin …

A Study Of The A-Signifying Semiotics Of Félix Guattari, Shubao Dong Nov 2018

A Study Of The A-Signifying Semiotics Of Félix Guattari, Shubao Dong

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper mainly discusses Guattari's a-signifying semiotics. He opposes Lacan's Structuralist psychoanalysis as well as the tyranny and hegemony of the signifier. By borrowing Hjelmslev's glossematics and Pierce's semiotics, he builds modes of semiotization, and develops the a-signifying semiotics, which offers a new perspective and dimension for the theory of subjectivity and the psychoanalytic criticism, and further forms a schizoanalytic criticism based on the a-signifying semiotics.

Qiyun And Rhythm, Feng Peng Nov 2018

Qiyun And Rhythm, Feng Peng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Qiyun is an important concept in traditional Chinese aesthetics. From the early 20th century, western sinologists and art historians have been engaged in the translation and interpretation of qiyun and changed its meaning into rhythm. These translations and interpretations have inspired modern Chinese aestheticians to reconsider this concept. Western aestheticians misunderstood qiyun as rhythm, because they have found that both modern Western paintings and traditional Chinese paintings appreciated the rhythm of lines. Nevertheless, qiyun is not rhythm. Rhythm in modern paintings is more akin to xieyi, another important concept of traditional Chinese aesthetics.

A Query About The "Peasant Uprising" And "Driven To Join The Liangshan Rebels" Hypotheses: An Analysis Of The Identities And Occupations Of The Heroes And Their Uprising Causes In Water Margin, Zhaoming Liu Nov 2018

A Query About The "Peasant Uprising" And "Driven To Join The Liangshan Rebels" Hypotheses: An Analysis Of The Identities And Occupations Of The Heroes And Their Uprising Causes In Water Margin, Zhaoming Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In the thematic and narrative study of Water Margin, the "Peasant Uprising" and "Driven to Join the Liangshan Rebels" hypotheses, though frequently questioned, still hold unshakable position among works on Chinese Literary History, popular readings and even Chinese language textbooks for high school. In fact, statistics suggest that instead of all the 108 heroes in the story, only 11 were peasants from the angle of big agriculture, and only 9 were compelled to join the Liangshan Rebels. This thesis proposes three interpretations underlying such long-lasting misunderstanding: 1) "Peasant Uprising" and "Driven to Join the Liangshan Rebels" hypotheses greatly overlap with …

Exploring The Lives Of Song Dynasty Women Through Hong Mai's Yijianzhi, Egan Ronald Nov 2018

Exploring The Lives Of Song Dynasty Women Through Hong Mai's Yijianzhi, Egan Ronald

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Yijianzhi is a collection of anecdotes and tales compiled by the Song dynasty literatus Hong Mai. Most of the stories it contains were transmitted orally to Hong Mai by people he knew. Consequently, Hong Mai believed the stories to be reliable accounts of events that had actually happened. This article follows the methods of the British Sinologist Glen Dudbridge in viewing such stories as belonging to medieval China's "vernacular culture." Many of Yijianzhi's stories feature one or another type of women as their protagonist, and so the collection is a valuable source for the study of women of that period. …
