Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Three approaches seem to characterize the reception of Vietnamese Literature in French: socio-historical, "essentialist" and feminist discourses. This article proposes to analyse the lack of theoretical thought and pertinence in some of the works published on the subject, which appear to introduce and promote this literature rather than study it. Without denying contributions that are indeed interesting, this paper, however, emphasizes works that raise questions and oblige us to ask: is there a critical reception of Vietnamese Francophone Literature?

In her novel entitled "Calomnies", Linda Lê depicts a "mad uncle" and a young female writer fascinated with her uncle’s marginality. In this book, Lê presents a complex view of schizophrenia. Sometimes, the actions and thoughts of the uncle are reminiscent of Deleuze and Guattari’s concepts such as le corps sans organe and la machine célibataire. Some other times however, Lê pays attention to the past of the uncle and shows how, in Vietnam, he witnessed the hypocrisy of his family during the war. It includes an introduction to the history of Chinese surnames, types and functions of Chinese genealogical records, problems in Chinese genealogical research, and how to conduct a typical Chinese-American genealogical research with examples for further research.

Philosophy and Religious Studies

2003 dissertation, UW-Madison, Buddhist Studies. A study of the life of the Kūkai (774-822), known posthumously by the honorific title Kōbō Daishi (Great Teacher who Propagated the Dharma). Kūkai is best known as the founder of Japanese Shingon Tantric Buddhism. The study is based primarily on writings attributed to him and his immediate followers and secondarily on early legends (those apparently dating from the Heian period) as identified by modern researchers. 中法甲申戰爭時，慘澹經營多年，後世喻為中國海軍搖籃的福州船政 局 (簡稱閩廠)，連同閩江沿線的防衛設備，於 1884年8月23-29 日的閩江之戰遭法人嚴重破壞。閩廠經費向非豐裕，戰後得修復與創新兼顧已非易事，更何況支用日益拮据，苟有所成，自屬難得。在這段非常時期，閩廠確有特殊的表現。這成就歸功於在甲申戰爭結束後不久便出掌閩廠的福建按察使蘇人裴蔭森(1823-1895)。

Huang Zunxian (1848-1905) was a famous patriot and diplomat during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Besides that, he was also an outstanding poet who expressed his reformation ideas through poetry between the middle of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. Huang's life as a diplomat and poet was paved with numerous obstacles and he even had to counter many different challenges. He served as a diplomat for twelve years, beginning his first diplomat duty in Japan in 1877, where he served for five years. This thesis is a study of the possible future developments of the Taiwan issue and the relationships between Mainland China and the island of Taiwan. After examining all the alternative scenarios, the author predicts that in the foreseeable future political and economic cooperation between Mainland China and the island of Taiwan will gradually increase, with avoidance of military confrontation, but complete reunification between Taiwan will not occur, nor will Taiwan become a legal state.

This annotated bibliography provides coverage of materials from the period between 1980 and 1995 and also includes important works of historical value published before 1980. The Wade-Giles system is used for the transliteration of Chinese materials. English publications that include Chinese characters transliterated by the author have those transliterations retained in the bibliographical annotations.Certain materials may have been omitted because the author is unaware of their existence or availability here in the United States.A great portion of the Chinese-language publications was found in the collection of Columbia University's C V Starr East Asian Library.

Although nothing precisely like the modern nonprofit organization, voluntary association or foundation existed in Asia prior to the 20th century, there can be little doubt that some types of similar indigenous activities are found deep in the history of the many cultures of Asia. Buddhism, for example, has a long record of organized activity, beliefs about giving, and other evidences of what might be termed Buddhist philanthropy.
