A Journey Through The Development Of A Dh Program For Undergraduates, R.C. Miessler, Clinton K. Baugess, John Dettinger, Kevin Moore

In institutions that do not actively integrate DH into the curriculum, introducing undergraduates to DH tools and methods can be difficult. However, Gettysburg College has facilitated a summer research experience for undergraduates. This interactive workshop will introduce participants to the Digital Scholarship Summer Fellowship program and provide a high-level overview of its development and implementation. Workshop leaders will provide guidance on developing a summer program tailored to participants' institution's needs and aspirations. Participants will come away with strategies for identifying stakeholders and partners, developing program goals, selecting digital tools, designing workshops, and methods to incorporate aspects of assessment and sustainability.

Unlike literature or plastic arts, theatre and performance are artistic forms that demand embodiment. In a recent Latin American Theater class, we introduced students to important 20th century Latin American theatrical texts and performance art in order to consider thematic and aesthetic components relating to issues such as nation-building, violence, language, identity, gender, sexuality, immigration, and memory. Further, we considered how the works we read have been performed, and how we might stage them ourselves, concluding with staging scenes in order to bring together our theoretical studies with embodied practice and enable students to engage corporeally with works that are …

Interdisciplinary collaboration between two faculty members in the humanities and computer science, a research librarian, and an undergraduate student has led to remarkable results in an ongoing international DH research project that has at its core 18th century manuscripts. The corpus stems from a vast collection of archival materials held by the Moravian Church in the UK, Germany, and the US. The number of pages to be transcribed, differences in handwriting styles, paper quality, and original language pose enormous problems for the feasibility of human transcription. This is the performance script and slides (embedded) of my Oct 11, 2019 talk given at the University of Albany Library's Digital Scholarship Conference--Digital Scholarship: Opportunities and Challenges (see https://scholarsarchive.library.albany.edu/dsconf/).

This talk examines how local conditions can strongly discourage pretenure faculty from engaging in innovative digital work. Arguing that individual faculty, larger institutions, local communities, and the humanities themselves lose out when digital scholarship is not adequately valued, I offer an "alternative universe tenure timeline," outlining some of the work I would have done in the past five years if digital scholarship was valued for promotion and tenure.

African Americans, who had been systematically oppressed from the very beginning of their time in the United States, were calling more and more loudly for freedom and equality in the mid-twentieth century. Compounded with the fear and hatred of communism was also a fear of black Americans ascending to the same societal plane as white Americans, especially among individuals and groups of people who held racist views and had reservations about equality between blacks and whites.

This essay examines Susan Sontag's _Illness as Metaphor_ alongside Daniel Harris's studies of those admitted for tuberculosis care at the Saranac Lake Sanitarium. While both Sontag’s perceptions and Patient 296’s tubercular reality may not be 100% aligned with one another (i.e., lived experience of someone with tuberculosis versus historical perceptions of the disease itself), by combining both aspects we are able to develop a fairly crystalline image of what it was like to actually have tuberculosis at this point in time. In doing so, it becomes clear that while some perceptions of tuberculosis may have been fairly misguided, it was …

Susan Sontag outlines in Illness as Metaphor the romantic narratives of what she called a “tubercular personality.” Sontag writes the following in doing so, describing one key aspect of romantic tuberculosis: “TB was understood, like insanity, to a kind of one-sidedness; a failure of will or an overintensity…the tubercular was considered to be someone quintessentially vulnerable, and full of self-destructive whims” (63-64). “A failure of will” and “quintessential vulnerability” form a set of characteristics through which a narrative of the “tubercular personality” is constructed. Over several millennia, ships have been displayed in all sorts of media ranging from commercials to diaries and newspapers. When the postcard was invented in 1869, various ships began appearing on them. Postcards with ships became far more than a way to message. They became advertisements, showcases of paintings, and repositories of information. Postcards gave ships a new purpose and unique audiences in the name of advertisement, art, and knowledge, as this essay will show by examining “Ships, Vol. 2”of the David P. Campbell Postcard Collection at The University of Akron.

The purpose of this project is to digitize and replicate nontraditional postcards from the David P. Campbell Postcard Collection from Drs. Nicholas and Dorothy Cummings Center for the History of Psychology.I set out to find the easiest way to replicate a few postcards that are nontraditional in one way or another. The method I came to involves using a Cricut Printer and the Cricut Design Space to scan and upload the complex shapes. The result was that I could very easily replicate any of the three chosen postcards with little to no trouble. I concluded that, even though Cricut Printers …

One psychogram, or means of testing personality, is handwriting analysis or graphology. Handwriting analysis can be used to look at personality traits or it can be used to determine emotions that a person is feeling when they are writing things like a postcard or a letter. This essay will look at the history of handwriting analysis and then will analyze four postcards from the 1920’s using Paul D. Hugon's handwriting analysis test.

Between the 1920s and the 1970s and as Alcatraz was decommissioned as a federal prison and bloomed into a booming tourist industry, the Rock saw a change in the way that the postcard industry portrayed it via photos on the back of postcards. As time went on, Alcatraz was depicted more as a tourist hotspot than a warning place to stay out of. Photo postcards of Alcatraz shifted from black and white photos and printed photos toward lively colored photos that had the message “Wish You Were Here!” printed on them, suggesting a cultural shift in attitude toward this notorious …

Cal Poly Frankenreads: An All-Day Public Reading Of Mary Shelly’S Frankenstein, Robert E. Kennedy Library

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, the Cal Poly English Department and Kennedy Library organized a series of interdisciplinary events including FrankenReads, an all-day public reading of the novel. Spanning twelve hours, members of the Cal Poly community from all colleges participated in the celebration by volunteering to read portions of Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.

This catalog is based on the celebration of events “FrankenFall” which took place on October 31, 2018 at the Robert E. Kennedy Library.

25–35 is a powder-coated steel installation by Anna Teiche. In honor of Phil Bailey, dean emeritus of the College of Science and Mathematics, who founded and championed the Study 25–35 Hours Per Week principle: To succeed, students need to study two hours per unit each week, or the equivalent of 25–35 hours per week.

“25–35” was conceptualized and designed by student Anna Teiche, who completed all of the fabrication using on-campus resources and labs. Anna learned to TIG weld with instruction from Doug Brewster and welding assistance from fellow Art and Design student Tommy Stoeckinger.

I want to experiment with AI generated images using GANs and then seek feedback on them from art and non-art students alike before telling them that they had been generated by an AI. I focused my research on examining the emotional responses people had to AI generated art and the overall question of “can an AI make art?”

In his novel, Pale Fire, Vladimir Nabokov uses a non-linear narrative composed in three parts: Foreword, Poem, and Commentary, apparently written by two distinct authors, John Shade and Charles Kinbote. Storylines appear to be separate at surface level yet work in interconnected ways at a deeper level. The novel deals with life after death, the story arc of a disguised, exiled king, and provides meta commentary on the art of commentary. The text was tricky to analyze without sentiment analysis principally because of its seemingly disjointed structure. Thus, there’s a bit of irony in that we found a repeated structure …

Someday, in the not-so-distant future, will the writers’ room be replaced by artificial intelligence? This poster was created by a group of actors and writers who were curious about the role artificial intelligence could play in the future of television writing. In the first stage of this project, we prompted GPT-2 with the opening lines of a scene from the television show Sex and the City, and had GPT-2 finish the scene. For my final project in AI for the Humanities, I knew that I wanted to examine the creative role of translators in classic literature. I ran three different translations of Homer’s The Odyssey through Syuzhet.R, a sentiment analysis tool that has grown increasingly popular in the Digital Humanities field. Syuzhet tracks the emotional arc (also called “emotional valence”) of a text by giving each word a different score. For example, on a scale of -1 to 1, “terrible” might score -1 and “amazing” might score 1. A more neutral word like “okay” would score closer to 0. I chose translations …
