The manuscripts of Elizabeth Freke's reminiscences are contained in two commonplace books held by the British Ubrary. The larger "white vellum" volume, which includes the earlier reminiscence, also contains letters, recipes, snatches of poetry and history, a survey of the West Bilney estate, and some inventories. The second "brown wallpaper" volume, begun some ten years after the first, also contains copies of rental agreements, land deeds, and financial transactions. These two manuscripts were donated to the British Ubrary in 1941 by Lady Mary Carbury, a descendant by marriage of Elizabeth Freke. Early in the twentieth century, Carbury published the only …

Higginson came to his military career as a man of letters, as well as a militant abolitionist. Before the war, he had earned a reputation as an antislavery lecturer and written pieces for the Atlantic Monthly and other journals on topics including natural history, masculine health, and slave insurrections. He took a hiatus from writing for publication during his tenure with the First South Carolina; to do otherwise, he believed, would be "a sort of profaning this experience & mixing incompatible lives" . But he kept a journal of his wartime experiences, which he began editing and mining for articles …

This article focuses on the diary's account of one particular episode of illness, but the manuscript in its entirety contains information of greater significance: Mersman's story illustrates the development of the middle class in nineteenth-century America.3 In 1849, when he was twenty-five, Mersman moved to St. Louis, where he and John Clemens Nulsen (1824-1906) established a business and became prominent members of the German-American community (see illustrations p. 17). They rectified whiskey and imported cigars. The finances of the Association for Documentary Editing are sound. 91 There has been a decrease in the general budget of $377, giving us unrestricted assets totaling $59,706. This year's slight reduction is mitigated by the large increase from last year ($7,401), and that large overage partly explains the present showing. A portion of the money for last year's conference in Washington, D.C., was received before the fiscal year began, so those monies were reported for the year in which they were received rather than across two years. Charles W. Polzer, S.J., died in Los Gatos, CA on Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at age 72. Dr. Polzer was born in San Diego, where he attended St. Augustine High School. Upon graduation from Santa Clara University in 1952, he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Los Gatos, CA. His course of studies took him to St. Louis University, MO, and Alma College of Santa Clara University, in Los Gatos, CA. Following his ordination into the priesthood in Los Angeles in 1964, he undertook a period of post-ordination studies in Cordoba, Spain. From 1958 to 1961, while studying for the priesthood, …

This project describes the development of an audio and video production facility at Bainbridge College, a small community college in Bainbridge, Georgia. The Digital Media Lab provides faculty, staff, and students with the ability to create audio and video resources for classroom use, research, training, and outreach.

The principal steps of this project were a literature review, a needs analysis, the equipment selection process, and implementation. The literature review included examples of how video is used in higher education, information about current trends in technology, and faculty development strategies. Although there has been a great deal of discussion about preserving electronic documents, editors have given little thought to how these would be edited once preserved, and no one has yet proposed an edition of electronic correspondence. Many argue that "sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof," but I think we need to get our collective head out of the sand and grapple with the relevant issues. Toward that end, I offer a plan for an edition of the e-mail of Bill Gates. It is, at the moment, purely hypothetical, but that could change at any moment.

The first volume of the long-awaited Papers of James Monroe uses mostly ·1 newspaper accounts, supplemented with correspondence and a few memoirs, to record President Monroe's tour of the northern states in 1817, his short tour of the Chesapeake Bay region in 1818, and his tour of the southern and western states in 1819. According to the introduction, these tours were particularly important because they became political events that "allowed the president to take his ideas directly to the people" (xxvii) and thus contributed, somewhat contrary to Monroe's desire to unify the nation, to the emerging shift of American politics …
