Reducing Fraud, Waste, And Abuse In International Aid Supply Chains Using Blockchain, Ilana Blackwood
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
Supply chains are an integral part of manufacturing, disaster management, charity, as well as many other sectors. Currently, supply chains are susceptible to many potential inefficiencies. For example, supply chains are prone to be affected by fraud, waste and abuse. Hence, this project seeks to explain how the implementation of smart contracts and block coupled with Internet of Things (IoT) to solve the inefficiencies currently existing within the supply chain, using development aid as an example.
The Gpt-2 Historian: Can A Language Model Write History, Grant Holt
The Gpt-2 Historian: Can A Language Model Write History, Grant Holt
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
Since the days of the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, credited as being the author of the first great narrative history, the field of history has been a distinctly human craft. The rise of the GPT-2 language model, however, presents a new and exciting question: can a transformer-based language model write history? The answer, as demonstrated by my findings, is complicated. History is both subjective and constantly changing. There are multiple schools of thought — such as cultural history, social history, environmental history, and economic history — each with conflicting methodologies as to how history is to be written and understood. …

Digitizing Camp: Training A Gpt-2 On "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", Sarah Groustra
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
“A sensibility (as distinct from an idea) is one of the hardest things to talk about; but there are special reasons why Camp, in particular, has never been discussed. It is not a natural mode of sensibility, if there be any such. Indeed the essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” –Susan Sontag, Notes on Camp (1964) Sontag, whose essay was (and continues to be) revolutionary, would perhaps blanche at the way the word “camp” has entered the wide vernacular of common slang. In her writing, she defines Camp as something ephemeral and whimsical, …

The stock market has always been subject to speculation. Oftentimes it is volatile but it is still an important mode of investment for many people. It carries great weight and is reflective of the performance of an economy. In macroeconomic courses in college, students are taught that in times of crises, CASH is KING, not assets in the market. Naturally, one would assume the COVID-19 pandemic would cause people to flock to holding monetary assets in cash. However, recently, as a result of the pandemic there has been a rise in the demand for cryptocurrencies. This might be because people …

GPT-2 has a number of hyper parameters that can be tuned to adjust the generated text, including temperature, number of epochs, size of the training text corpus, batch size, and number of samples generated. Since GPT-2 is a new AI model, the effects of fine-tuning are still relatively unknown and unexplored. This paper summits experiments adjusting these GPT-2 parameters and how they affect the text output that the model generates.

To begin, newspapers are vital for the Fourth Estate which means that newspapers are the check to the checks and balances of government. The past decade has not been a very good time for newspapers, as they have been caught in the digital revolution. More and more newspapers are shutting down because of online competition, drop in ad revenue, declining circulation among young readers, and the hunger for the fastest news, 24/7. Newspapers and their effect on society are indispensable. Newspapers, staffed by hard-working, truth-seeking reporters who aren’t afraid of doing whatever it takes to bring justice, earned the title …

IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
Vlog, or video blog, is the chicest form of personal production on YouTube First appearing at the beginning of the 21 st century, vlogs saw an enormous rise in popularity around 2005 Differing from other forms of production, vlogs allow their producers more freedom in expressing themselves without the limitation of content, word count, and forms of expression The absence of censorship and early stage marketing allows an almost free market effect in the sense that the most popular vloggers and videos are purely the choice of people Therefore, analyzing viral vlogs and vloggers can offer a more accurate representation …
Image Generation Through Stylegans: Is It Art?, Sophie Dodd
Image Generation Through Stylegans: Is It Art?, Sophie Dodd
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
I wanted to explore how the role of artificial intelligence is developing within the art world and how current attitudes surrounding AI as a creative tool are changing. I want to experiment with AI generated images using GANs and then seek feedback on them from art and non-art students alike before telling them that they had been generated by an AI. I focused my research on examining the emotional responses people had to AI generated art and the overall question of “can an AI make art?”

Doubles And Reflections: Sentiment Analysis And Vladimir Nabokov’S Pale Fire, Catherine Perloff
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
In his novel, Pale Fire, Vladimir Nabokov uses a non-linear narrative composed in three parts: Foreword, Poem, and Commentary, apparently written by two distinct authors, John Shade and Charles Kinbote. Storylines appear to be separate at surface level yet work in interconnected ways at a deeper level. The novel deals with life after death, the story arc of a disguised, exiled king, and provides meta commentary on the art of commentary. The text was tricky to analyze without sentiment analysis principally because of its seemingly disjointed structure. Thus, there’s a bit of irony in that we found a repeated structure …

Analyzing Popular Music Using Spotify’S Machine Learning Audio Features, Noah Amsterdam
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
The modern ability to stream music using services such as Spotify, Pandora, and Apple music has revolutionized how it is consumed. There is now more music accessible at our fingertips than ever before in history. As someone who has played an instrument their whole life and with some music theory knowledge, I always strive to better understand what I’m listening to. This motivated me to dive into finding out how music is quantified, specifically on Spotify, and what makes up people’s musical taste. I will be approaching music tastes from 3 angles: Spotify, music critics, and my own analysis and …

Someday, in the not-so-distant future, will the writers’ room be replaced by artificial intelligence? This poster was created by a group of actors and writers who were curious about the role artificial intelligence could play in the future of television writing. In the first stage of this project, we prompted GPT-2 with the opening lines of a scene from the television show Sex and the City, and had GPT-2 finish the scene. We filmed the three best GPT-2 generated scenes, and screened these scenes for our “AI for the Humanities” class, along with a filmed version of the original Sex …
Lost In Translation: Using Sentiment Analysis To Analyze Translations Of Homer’S Odyssey, Erin Shaheen
Lost In Translation: Using Sentiment Analysis To Analyze Translations Of Homer’S Odyssey, Erin Shaheen
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
For my final project in AI for the Humanities, I knew that I wanted to examine the creative role of translators in classic literature. I ran three different translations of Homer’s The Odyssey through Syuzhet.R, a sentiment analysis tool that has grown increasingly popular in the Digital Humanities field. Syuzhet tracks the emotional arc (also called “emotional valence”) of a text by giving each word a different score. For example, on a scale of -1 to 1, “terrible” might score -1 and “amazing” might score 1. A more neutral word like “okay” would score closer to 0. I chose translations …

In 2017 alone Major League Baseball organizations spent a combined 492 million dollars on acquiring new, young, talented players through the draft or signing international free agents. The effectiveness of an MLB organization’s scouting department is pertinent to ensuring future success. Due to the highly volatile nature of professional sports, identifying a predictive and measurable statistic(s) associated with success among players would be valuable. Furthermore, a team’s ability to quickly and correctly identify players on their Minor League affiliates that will have a positive impact at the Major League level can give them an advantage over other teams. For this …

Generating 3d Sculptures Using A Recurrent Neural Network With Long Short-Term Memory, Nick Downey
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
Sophisticated generative models have been some of the most obviously impressive achievements of AI in the past decade. Indeed, AI has approached or achieved human-level performance in a variety of domains, with a particular focus placed on artistic disciplines. Because writing a value function for this kind of model is effectively impossible, these models are notoriously difficult to evaluate. My aim was to create such a model, and in doing so elucidate the characteristics of successful generative AI and explore how generative models can be adapted successfully to new domains. And more broadly, I hoped to create a model capable …
Creating Art Using Generative Adversarial Networks, Henry Abbott
Creating Art Using Generative Adversarial Networks, Henry Abbott
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
I set out to explore how artificial intelligence generated artwork compares to human created artwork. Using CycleGANs, my goal was to create art, and then conduct a Turing Test in order to determine whether or not one could distinguish between A.I. and human art. Using this test, as well as my own observations, I planned to analyze where CycleGANs succeeds in creating art, as well as where it struggles. Following this analysis, I thought more about what the results mean for art moving forward, and if artificial intelligence can truly create art.

Analyzing Visual Sentiment In Photojournalism, Eryn Powell
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
Like any other branch of journalism, a photojournalist’s intent is to capture an image that conveys the the events represented in the image while evoking an emotional response that allows the viewer to connect with the content of the photo or news report to which the photo is attached. Under the umbrella of photojournalism, political photography is unique in that it is heavily swayed by public opinion. This project intends to introduce a duel perspective on visual sentiment in political photojournalism.

Natural Language Processing (Nlp) Of Liberal Arts College Newspapers In Ohio Over 30 Years, Shane Canfield
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
Computers have been extremely useful in humanity’s quest for knowledge, performing calculations and other strenuous tasks in seconds. For a computer to perform the tasks, it requires a specific set of instructions, or code, to tell it what to do. These series of commands and instructions are strict, in that any syntactic error results in faulty, or zero functionality. Human language is very much unlike that of a computer, in that it can be grammatically incorrect, irregular, or even incomplete, yet another human may still get the point and understand the information being exchanged. A significant part about what makes …

Deep Reinforcement Learning In Trading Algorithms, Tucker Bennett, Delaney Ambrosen, Joe Woody, Simon Fruth
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
An algorithm that can learn an optimal policy to execute trade profitable is any market participant’s dream. In the project, we propose an algorithm that does just that: a Deep Reinforcement Learning trading algorithm. We design our algorithm by tuning the reward function to our specified constraints, taking into account unrealized Profits and Losses (PnL), Sharpe ratio, profits, and transaction costs. Additionally, we use a short 5-month moving average replay memory in order to ensure our algorithm is basing its decision on the most pertinent information. We combine the aforementioned concepts to make a theoretical Deep Reinforcement Learning trading algorithm.

Rnn Monophonic Sheet Music Generation With Lilypond, Seth Colbert-Pollack
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
Computers are well suited to tasks such as data categorization and labeling. More challenging is data “generation”, a problem in which recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and more specifically long short-term memory networks (LSTMs) have made significant progress in the past few years. In this project, I train an RNN on a database of classical sheet music, and use it to generate new sheet music.

Leed Certification Prediction With K-Means Clustering Algorithm, Jack Chase
IPHS 300: AI for Humanity
This project uses a K-Means Clustering algorithm. K-Means Clustering is a method of vector quantization, originally from signal processing that is popular for cluster analysis in data mining. K-Means Clustering aims to partition n observations into kclusters in which each observation belongs to the cluster with the nearest mean, serving as a prototype of the cluster. The example above has three clusters, and my project used four clusters, one for each LEED Certification. I
