Let me make up some biographical conclusions from my reading of Margaret Fuller's letters: first, she had no interest in radical abolitionism or even in more moderate antislavery efforts in New England. What is the twenty-year gap? There are no journal volumes from fall 1870 until January 1893. After filling more than forty volumes-nearly five thousand pages detailing her life from her fifteenth through her thirty-first years, Frances E. Willard suddenly stopped keeping a journal. On her thirty-first birthday, 28 September 1870, she wrote: "[M]y Journal has this day been shaken hands with in a long adieu, and I here record my purpose to write no more wishy-washy pages of personal reminiscence." Goodwin and the creative philanthropy of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., this former "seat of empire" has been restored to its eighteenth-century appearance.

In what ways does literary theory, as filtered through textual criticism, enter into editorial practice? That is the central question addressed in this stimulating collection of essays by editors, textual critics, and literary theorists. The critical discourse is diverse. Response to the call for support and the dues notices which Harriet Simon sent out at the first of the year has been great! More than forty members renewed at increased levels and many of you made additional contributions. John Kaminski reports having sent out more than 100 copies of Beth Luey's Editing Documents and Texts while Dennis Conrad notes that contributions totaled more than $2,000. The membership list stands at 475, though a number of second notices had to be sent out this summer. In short, we weathered another financial crisis.

John Dewey, because of his longevity and productivity, has spawned a cottage industry. Seldom has one man kept so many women respectably employed for so long (we are not prejudiced; we have had a male co-worker now and again). Of course, his editors are not the only ones who have been busy; an increasing number of scholars are churning out books and articles on topics ranging from Dewey and the May Fourth Movement in China to the important women in Dewey's life.

When John Dewey was born in 1859, there were in this country some men, and a few women, who were philosophers, teachers of philosophy, and students of philosophy, but these people could not teach or study American philosophy because there was no body of thought that could be called "American philosophy." Half a century later, we did have an identifiable "American" philosophy and much that is distinctive about it we owe to John Dewey. The letter book along with his other papers and books remained in the possession of the Abercromby family for almost a century after his death. In the early 1870S London booksellers purchased the collection and from there items were sold and dispersed. A note in the letter book dates its presentation by the Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution to the State Library and Archives as 22 February 1919, Jon Kukla's foreword to the edition notes that while the manuscript has been available to scholars for seventy years, its usefulness has been limited because "its scrawled text [is] virtually indecipherable" …

No one doubted the wisdom of gathering information about current use of historical sources when the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and the American Council of Learned Societies launched the Historical Documents Study two years ago. The Commission would learn more about the context for its own decisions to support projects that publish and preserve historical documents. True to its mission to lead and educate in matters of the nation's documentary heritage, the Commission would also inform other agencies and individuals responsible for similar decisions affecting historical sources and research.

The once-popular "Joyous Miracle" is now a distinctly minor short story in the canon of Frank Norris. First given separate publication in England and the United States as a Christmas giftbook in 1906, it was then being recycled for its earning potential as a seasonal offering; for it had already appeared as an 1898 Christmas piece in McClure's Magazine under the title "Miracle Joyeux." Norris's contemporaries held it in high regard: for example, the New Orleans Times-Democrat found the McClure's version a "charming sketch" and praised its author for succeeding with a difficult-to-handle theme-difficult because its featured character was the …
