With the June 2002 issue a new team has assumed responsibility for publishing Documentary Editing. The transition from Arizona State University to Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) has been made easy by Beth Luey, the outgoing editor and president-elect of the Association for Documentary Editing, and her editorial staff.

Sir William Berkeley (1605-1677), long-time governor of Virginia is known to history mainly for his part in Bacon's Rebellion, an episode that forever stained an otherwise noteworthy reputation. Of a West Country family, he took degrees at the University of Oxford before making a tour of the Continent and finding a place at the court of Charles I. He remained a courtier until lack of advancement led him to seek a fresh start somewhere else, and he used his connections to win appointment as governor of Virginia in 1641. Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address is perhaps as familiar and frequently read as any text in American English. Engraved in stone on the North wall of the Lincoln Memorial in 701 words, it is a text that many of Lincoln's countrymen can recite from memory and has often been called "greatest speech." For the other leading candidate for that honor, the Gettysburg Address, there are five known copies in Lincoln's handwriting, none of which is exactly the same. The challenges of the past two and one-half years for the staff of the Lincoln Legal Papers have been daunting. First, we had to take a successful project through the transition from one director to another and from one form of publication to another. Then, in quick succession, we began a larger initiative-the Papers of Abraham Lincoln-of which the Lincoln Legal Papers became a part.

A good deal of scholarship over the past thirty years has been devoted to Hughes's life and writings, particularly to his poetry and fiction and to his status as one of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance. In time for his hundredth birthday in 2002, the University of Missouri Press is completing publication of The Collected works of Langston Hughes, a seventeen-volume collection that will ensure wide access to most of Hughes's writings for generations to come. The present-day MEGA, which began in the early 1970's, was a second attempt at a complete edition. The first one, in the Soviet Union in the 1920's and 1930's, did not get very far primarily because many collaborators fell victim to repression by Stalin. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954, Ted went on to receive his Ph.D. at Bryn Mawr in 1962. He then taught at Phillips Academy, the University of Delaware, St. Stephen's School in Rome (where the library is named in his honor), the Johns Hopkins University, and Catholic University, Dr. Carter's life came full circle when he returned to Philadelphia in 1980. Sources by or about the lives of young children are not widely or easily available; sources offering a glimpse into the life a young African American child are particularly scarce. For that reason alone, Lois Brown's rediscovery of this long-neglected Memoir and Harvard University Press's decision to publish it in a serious scholarly edition (in paper as well as cloth) is an important contribution to the literature. Brown describes the Memoir, originally published in Boston in 1835 by the white antislavery activist bookseller and printer James Loring, as a combination of "two distinctive nineteenth- century literary forms, the didactic spiritual …

In 1985 when the editors of the Correspondence of Charles Darwin were assembling letters for volume 2 (1837-1843), the letter to be described below came to their attention. The editors decided to omit it from the edition because, despite the "Ch. Darwin" signature, it was not considered an authentic Darwin letter. Some scholars have questioned this decision, among them Professor Phillip R. Sloan, who thinks that it may be a Darwin letter, or that at least it should be included as a letter of uncertain authorship. Accordingly, the editors have decided to review the decision and to consider whether any …

At the end of October, the ADE Council learned that the agenda for the November 13 meeting of Commissioners of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission would include a plan for ranking ongoing NHPRC-funded editorial projects with an eye for possible curtailment of funds. Such a plan would have gone into effect only in case of financial emergency, and it would have applied only to the "second tier" of projects whose grant applications are considered in the spring, not the "first tier" Founding Fathers editions.
