Underlining over ten allegories and many extended metaphors, “The Vandal,” Harris’ first self-published book, is a poetry epic about the ambiguous and emotional deposits of his own “Mary Sue,” who delves straight into one of the most versatile and unconventional exhibitions of melodrama and manipulation in the modern literary catalogue.

Harris does not hold back, making dramatic remarks as well as ensuring an alter-ego at hand through the abstract photography of his face that fills most pages. His repertoire also includes his other concept art and works from fellow artists around the world.

In 1921 Langston Hughes penned, “My soul has grown deep like the rivers” in his poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” (Hughes 1254). Weaving the profound pain of the African American experience with the symbolism of the primordial river, Hughes recognized the inherent power of water as a means of spiritual communication and religious significance. Departing from the traditional interpretation of the American pastoral as typified by white poets such as Robert Frost and Walt Whitman, the African American poets emerging from the Harlem Renaissance established a more nuanced pastoral landscape embedded within urban cultures, utilizing water in particular as …

Theses

Bob Dylan's receipt of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016 for "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition" is perhaps the strongest validation for New Historicism as a method of literary analysis. The individual puzzle pieces of Dylan's postmodern rock poems are themselves little bits of history, but combined within the context of the massive paradigm shifts of the 1960s, they become something new and entirely relevant to the nonstop turmoil of contemporary life in America.

The premise of this thesis is to explore the concepts of Carl Jung’s collective unconscious and archetypes using myths from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. In exploring the archetypes of the Animus, the Mother, the Hero, the Child, the Trickster, and Rebirth through these myths, I aim to demonstrate their relevance to modern psychology by directly connecting them to related psychopathologies as described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Behavioral and Mental Disorders V. The poems included in this manuscript look at the ways in which women have been silenced and forced to submit, with emphasis on, though not limited to, a patriarchal fundamentalist Christian subculture called Quiverfull. Part autobiography, part documentary and part myth, the manuscript explores the various ways such damage becomes interwoven into women’s identities and stories, but also the ways in which women find resilience and strength.

The occasion for the writing of these poems was activism surrounding the controversial highway known as the Roe 8 extension in the areas of Cockburn and Fremantle in Western Australia. Planned in the 1950s, Roe 8 is contentious for a number of reasons, including extraordinary political deals over funding, undue process regarding environmental reporting, lack of a business case, inadequate noise and traffic modelling, erasure of Indigenous heritage sites, and clearing of the sensitive Beeliar wetlands and Coolbellup banksia woodlands which were designated a Threatened Ecological Community in 2016. Sanctum Drag is a hybrid work that gnaws at the boundaries of personal and public, performative and lived. Within, St. Joseph, as the patriarch of the Catholic Church, is dismantled through a series of elegies, maps, and plays. Throughout, the characters and speakers are auditioning and experimenting towards new means of reproduction, outside of the logic of heteronormativity and marriage. Like the various characters, the form of the text is always shifting, always searching its own edges. The mutating forms create a call-and-response, one form taking up where another form fails. Failure, then, becomes a crucial practice for the speakers …
