This thesis comprises poems written during my two years of study for the Master of Arts Degree in English with a creative writing emphasis. The majority of the poems are written in either a received or contemporary form, although a substantial minority are written in free verse. Many of the poems deal with extreme circumstances such as combat and imprisonment. Others address family stresses due to birth, death, remarriage, and clashes of values. Some poems have a religious emphasis while others are firmly rooted in the natural world. All, however, are explorations of human nature.

I have memories of being in my room with a notebook, scribbling lines and rhymes about cats and fireworks. I have proof of these memories—a staple- bound booklet of poetry, illustrated with clipart and colorful text. I was so proud of the work; it was the project of a third grader’s time, effort, imagination, and mind. Even in my movement from that childhood room to the campus at the University of Rhode Island; and my maturity from nursery rhymes to Chaucer and Shakespeare, I have always carried a passion for language and creativity.

Expatriates Of "Good" Motherhood: Bearing Witness, Guilt, And Burdens Of Transgressive Motherhood, Kelsey Nicole Lueptow

To be an expatriate requires emotional stamina to withstand culture shock, loneliness, and self-doubt. To be an expatriate of “good” motherhood is no less shocking, no less lonely, and no less anxiety-inducing. This collection braids original creative pieces with critical inquiry into the roots of disorienting riptides of motherhood mythology. The creative pieces include flash nonfiction essays and poetry; the critical inquiry explores historical narratives, critical theory, feminist theory, and literary narratives. By braiding these different forms, the work aims to create a collage of cultural artifacts, whose composition can better illuminate the darkest corners of elusive motherhood mythology.

This is a creative thesis composed of two components: 1) a critical introduction that contextualizes and supports the project of the second component, 2) a book manuscript of poetry. The project explores genre concerns of poetry by developing experimental prose poems that incorporate video game themes, language, and instructional writing. The project presents the interplay of the notions of control and failure to examine the borders between simulation (games) and reality (the world outside of games). Zach Manges has made much of his time as an English Writing major at DePauw. He has worked in almost every genre - playwriting, fiction writing, and poetry - and he is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Midwestern Review. His work is distinguished by such lines as “We say we have two seasons here: winter/ and construction, where streets get/ facelifts until they can’t stop/ smiling.” When you read Zach’s poems you can tell he’s in love with words. I’ve had the pleasure of watching Amanda Volel continue to develop as a poet in her senior year. In one poem she writes, “Poetry is a cathedral I find myself in.'" In one sense she worships in the cathedral of poetry, yet in. another, she tears that “cathedral” down. By the end of that poem, poetry is reduced to a “box that opens [her] chest.” Her work moves across the landscape of New York City picking up what she finds both literally and linguistically.
