Making Peace With Contradictions: Reflections Of Territory And Identity In Israel/Palestine, Chase Clow

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Both historical and personal essay, this culminating project is a creative non-fiction work exploring the modern historical roots of the Israel/Palestine conflict. Part I surveys the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Palestine, centering on two key figures: Israeli Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion (1886-1973), and Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Muslim Leader Hajj Amin al-Husayni (1897-1974). Interweaving historical fact, myth, personal story, and biography, with Israeli and Palestinian poetry and poses by the author, themes such as relationship to land, attachment to home, and the displacement created by industrialization upon a traditional, rural lifestyle are explored. Reparations, my first collection of poems, is a book in which I pay homage to my African ancestors by striving, through poetry, to repair the spiritual, mental, and physical damage that I have experienced and continue to experience via personal and societal ideologies. Though Reparations cannot totally restore me, I believe poetry can aid my efforts at self-restoration and help me honor my ancestors, their determination to overcome all odds. I believe Reparations can work to provide some repair because the act of writing a poem forces the poet to reflect on his or her life.

Imagery is often defined as language that appeals to the senses. Imagery, however, is the meat of any poem, and going beyond this simplistic definition. One of the most important functions of imagery is to help establish tone, and relationship between imagery and tone enables a poem to describe, declare, assert, or imagine-to use voices that are objective, personal, opinionated, or wildly speculative.

Tonally, the poems were aggressive, and something had to temper their edge. I went to the other extreme, looking to the most basic function of imagery-description. Obviously, all poems are, on some level, descriptive. Descriptive imagery is …

godspeople is a creative thesis focusing on the relationship between humanity and divinity. In three sections of poetry, the work explores the idea of sacrifice as it relates to the human conception of the divine (“gods and people”), presents a portrait of a godless, and therefore hopeless, society (“godspeople”), and explores the search for meaning in individual lives (“people of god”).
