Taking Up Slack, Thomas Andrew Yuill

Taking Up Slack, a collection of twenty-seven poems, is arranged in three sections, drawing from varying formal and social contexts. The idea at work here is that poetry must establish space for itself at the level of form and at the level of its subject matter: that poetry creates a community, and in doing so establishes parameters, but, in doing so, also establishes sufficient discursive space for reconfiguring those parameters. These poems, then, emerge from the necessarily contestatory relationship between the pleasure of form, which is fulfilled expectation, and the pleasure of form reconfigured, which, through a kind of sly …

STEVEN VINCENT describes his attempt to come to terms with what he has seen in the killing fields of Cambodia, monuments to the Khmer Rouge's systematic destruction of Cambodians who had known or imagined life other than the rural peasant ideal their bloody torturers and murderers envisioned, even if this means not coming to terms with it at all but to accept its unacceptability, not to rationalize the irrational. Herein is a collection of poems each having something to do with how and/or why we figure our bodies in relation to the Space we tend to call the World, History, or Family. The first section, entitled "Settlement," deals primarily with the idea of orienting ourselves in terms of family in its loosest sense. The second section, "Generation," questions the relation of space and family in terms of the Bible's Old Testament. The penultimate section, ''Landscape," considers the body as physical presence in a space which by definition should be alien to it. "The Naming," the final section of the …

Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.

Word Into Idea: The Four-Column Association And The Placket, Stephen W. Fried

Two aleatory exercises in experimental poetry and prose for face-to-face classrooms are described step-by-step, In the first, a round-robin of word associations provides a lexicon from which first a poem and then a prose piece are generated and optionally shared. In the second, participants compile lists of rhyming words that are transferred to templates that position the rhyming words among blanks to be filled in. The sequence generates first a four-line poem from two triple rhymes, then a six-line poem from three triple rhymes and finally a ten-line poem from five quintuple rhymes. Results are shared on a voluntary basis.
