Bleek: A Dramatic Poem, Gwendolyn Gail Nixon

This poem is not about any character in particular. It is a montage of disenfranchised voices which reflect disenchantment with the status quo: a system that continues to see gang members as crazed people who are non-human, a stereotype which perpetuates gang-related killings.
Nevertheless, the poem has some of the qualities of a short story in that it has a beginning, middle, and end, as well as a central character, Bleek, who speaks for the norms of the poem. Through a series of scenes and reflections, Bleek takes us on a journey which is as demoralizing as the one that …

After just finishing this issue of The Promethean, the same nagging feeling reduces me to simple frustration: I know that there are potential witers out there who have thought about contributing but have not. It is not only that I value each piece submitted, but it is because I know that people are moved by and enjoy reading the works of others.

How should literary critics accomplish their necessary judgments? Robert Penn Warren, though marginalized by some historians of literary criticism in the twentieth century, has, in D. G. MYERS's opinion, an important contribution to our understanding of the discipline. Katharine's Dream is about a girl born into a family of great passion and great fear. Not all members of the family survive this devastating combination. These poems tell of who survived and how, and of who did not.
The poems are predominantly free verse lyrics which use standard diction and syntax. More often than not, they employ a short line, dense imagery and "white space," which frames the images and ideas, in the words of Mary Oliver, with the necessary "silence." Though the rhythms of some of the poems flow among smoothly, line breaks in others often suggest the …

Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.
