Zach Manges has made much of his time as an English Writing major at DePauw. He has worked in almost every genre - playwriting, fiction writing, and poetry - and he is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Midwestern Review. His work is distinguished by such lines as “We say we have two seasons here: winter/ and construction, where streets get/ facelifts until they can’t stop/ smiling.” When you read Zach’s poems you can tell he’s in love with words. He has developed as a writer as a magician might. As you read Zach’s work notice his sleight of hand.

I’ve had the pleasure of watching Amanda Volel continue to develop as a poet in her senior year. In one poem she writes, “Poetry is a cathedral I find myself in.'" In one sense she worships in the cathedral of poetry, yet in. another, she tears that “cathedral” down. By the end of that poem, poetry is reduced to a “box that opens [her] chest.” Her work moves across the landscape of New York City picking up what she finds both literally and linguistically.
