In this issue, we explore the nature of beginnings. Our theme, Genesis, has brought in a broad range of submissions, from poetry reflecting on our Biblical roots to memoirs detailing first experiences at college. We asked the Concordia community to submit poems, nonfiction, artwork, photography, and short fiction that embraced our theme, but did not limit our acceptance only to work that was inspired by beginnings. From someone who from an early age had wanted to be a poet, and whose favourite poet was Wordsworth, it is not difficult to imagine that in some way I would relate to nature as a mature woman. For me it was not the difficulty of being a woman poet which offered the greatest challenge, since my father, a traditional musician, and my aunt who was a songwriter in America had encouraged me to write poetry, but the difficulty was of combining political activism with poetry.

Although we use the term author on a daily basis to refer to certain individuals, bodies of work, and systems of ideas, as Michel Foucault and other critics have pointed out, attempting to answer the question “What is an Author?” is by no means a simple proposition.
