The Color Of Memory: Reimagining The Antebellum South In Works By James Mcbride Through The Use Of Free Indirect Discourse, Janel L. Holmes

This thesis examines the use of interior narrative techniques such as free indirect discourse and internal monologue in two of James McBride’s neo-slave narratives, Song Yet Sung (2008) and The Good Lord Bird (2013). Very limited critical attention has been given to these neo-slave narratives that illustrate McBrides attention to characterization and focalized narration. In these narratives McBride builds upon the revelations he explores in his bestselling memoir, The Color of Water (1996, 2006), where he learns to disassociate race and character. This is a semi-fictional story told through a series of fake found documents. It describes my work and thoughts through metaphor. Machines have the potential to gain self-consciousness through accumulation of errors. Creativity can be confused with randomly generated variety. The acceptance of chaos and loss of control can provide a path to enlightenment.

The aim of this thesis is to explore expressivist theory of writing. In the 21st century, rhetoricians and writers have taken different stances on the writing process and the pros and cons of free writing, journal writing, and blogging. With these looming theory wars, the author of this thesis wanted to show that there is a benefit to expressivist theory as part of the writing process. This thesis first examines where the author began a personal transformation and over the course of 8 months, she uses the internet to blog about spirituality, gratitude, and enlightenment.
