This thesis seeks to explore the relationship between language, traumatic memory, and identity. Through a cross-genre creative style of writing and scholarship, the writer engages with trauma theory, performative language theory, psychoanalysis, and literature in order to illuminate how language, in its various forms, is the key to self-reclamation after a traumatic event terrorizes the body and mind. Additionally, through the lens of personal narrative, the writer investigates how relationships with language, the reverberations of trauma, and the tumultuous motion of our formative years can affect the development of identity by way of memory. Overview: A first-year PhD student in the English Department, I am working closely with Dr. Ann Fisher-Wirth, Editor of The Ecopoetry Anthology, on a creative writing project, “The Book of Red.” My project aims to both uncover the environmental damage wrought upon my hometown of Piscataway, New Jersey and to broaden the field of possibility surrounding ecocriticism, especially regarding fabulist literature and fairy tales. Whose Line Is It, Anyway?: Doing Harm In Disability Memoir, Teresa Milbrodt

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

This paper examines disability memoirs, and the author's responsibility to their community versus their personal story. While telling stories of disability can be a means of sharing one's truth, authors may be wrongly interpreted as speaking for a diverse community of individuals, or they may do harm to other disabled people by devaluing an entire group. Some memoirsts have avoided this potential for harm by expanding their notions of disability and community to embrace intersectionality, but it is vital to read a wide variety of disability memoirs to gain this complex picture.

Free Battered Texas Women: Survivor-Advocates Organizing At The Crossroads Of Gendered Violence, Disability, And Incarceration, Cathy Marston Phd

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

This article recaps my symposium presentation, where I argue that feminist organizing strategies are central to healing our society and creating restorative justice from my perspective as a survivor of occupational injury, battering, and criminalization for self-defense. This includes the creation of Free Battered Texas Women. We prefer to think of ourselves as survivor-advocates who use a variety of tactics to empower ourselves, incarcerated battered women, and citizens. These strategies include pedagogy; poetry and other written forms; art; and legislative advocacy. I blend this grassroots activism with feminist disability theory, radical feminist theory, feminist ethnography, and feminist criminology.

This dissertation chronicles a profound recent shift within the US political left from an essentially backward-looking orientation to one marked by an unfamiliar sense of timeliness. Presented chronologically, the essays included here approach the vertiginous American political landscape since 2016 through readings of cultural phenomena from Bernie Sanders’s short-lived career as an experimental writer to Caitlyn Jenner’s reality show. They make up a Trump-era diary haunted by the ghosts of twentieth-century social movements and an intellectual coming-of-age story about growing up at the end of the end of history.

Cultivating Convergence Through Creative Nonfiction: Identity, Development, And The Metaphor Of Transfer, Wendy Ryden, Danielle Sposato

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

The authors explore the role of the creative nonfiction course in the development of a writerly self and propose a paradigm of developmental convergence to supplement composition studies’ metaphor of traditional transfer tied to outcomes-based education and assessment culture. The paper further considers the idea of CNF as method rather than genre and its ties to expressivism in composition studies and pedagogy.
