This is a wonderful story about a little bird named Tico who at the beginning of the story has no wings. He is visited by the Wishingbird, who grants him a pair of beautiful Golden Wings. Tico loves his new wings that allow him to reach new heights, but he is criticized by his friends for being different, and goes into exile. A family of field mice, who live in a stone wall on an abandoned farm, have been gathering supplies for the winter. Frederick, however, has not lifted a finger. They accuse him of being lazy, but he claims he’s gathering things just as important as food- the sun’s rays, colors, and words. When winter comes, the food runs out, but Frederick’s unique supplies and poetic delivery sustain the mice.
