This thesis explores a conversation between the “self” and Filipino culture to examine the ways the Filipino diaspora exists in literature amongst colonization and trauma. Through literary texts spanning across time and geographical locations, like Elaine Castillo’s America Is Not the Heart and Jessica Hagedorn's Dogeaters, I interrogate the cultural and psychic meanings associated with the concept of home within the context of these hybrid histories. By examining the neo-canonical literature of some of these authors, I interrogate their sense of self, voices and visions via the languages, symbols, cultural frameworks and emotions that are prevalent within the literary …

Translating Contemporary Minimalist Poetry: Limitations And Complexities, Hannah G. Riddle

Undergraduate Honors Theses

I have written and translated a collection of poetry into German, comparing the obvious constraints of minimalist poetry to longer and prosaic forms. In addition to pertinent literature, I utilize my educational background in German as well as a recent foreign language internship to explore the limitations and complexities of translating contemporary minimalist poetry. I focus on how, because of its inherent need for syntactic brevity, minimalist poetry can often be one of the most difficult types of poetry to translate.

B.L.M. was created as a response to the resurgence of racism and xenophobic hate-crimes against Black people and their communities, often at the hands of police. It was the hate crimes plus the scape-goating of Blacks add in poverty rates, the exponentially high Black unemployment rates, and the over policing of Black neighborhoods. Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

In 1967 Valerie Solanas published the Society for Cutting Up Men (the SCUM) Manifesto. She shot artist Andy Warhol in 1968. Her Manifesto raises issues about whether a revolution can be fought or won without using violence. “Nice” girls were of no use to her Radical feminists, especially Ti-Grace Atkinson and Flo Kennedy, saw Solanas as a symbol of a feminist fighting back and rushed to her side. They found a smart, very paranoid woman who was a decided loner. Ultimately, Solanas would not work with Atkinson and Kennedy; she refused to allow them to help her or explain …

Through my research I have discovered there are many complexities that exist within the topic of intimacy. Of these complexities, I chose to explore the topics attachment and codependency in my final series. Attachment and codependency are deeply rooted in psychology, poetry, and many artist’s practices. The relationship between poetry and my work has become deeply intertwined. I combine poetry with my work as a way to document my feelings and to inspire the titles for my paintings. Through a series of intimate watercolor paintings, I reference bodies, intimate interactions and the ambiguity within the two. This ambiguity asks viewers …

Always on the Clock is a partial collection of stories centering around the working lives of men and women in Houston, Texas, that explores failed notions of the American Dream. Houston, my hometown, is not perfect by any means, but, given its cultural diversity, I do find it to be the perfect backdrop for the struggles my characters face as they yearn for better versions of themselves, however unattainable their desires may be. A Blended Displacement; Stories from the Periphery, explores various forms and definitions of displacement through relationships, travel, and the sense of home. The thesis explores such subject matter as a creative work of mixed creative non-fiction and fiction. By engaging with controversial terms like expatriate, immigrant, refugee, and third-culture-kid, the work interrogates the political with the personal. The non-fiction part of the thesis centers on the narrative of a woman from Michigan living abroad, contrasting with the historical fiction portrayal of a Slovenian immigrant in Michigan.
