Some writers specialize in humor or in the offbeat. Even those who do not sometimes play with the form. Jokes Review wants to see your funny poem or offbeat piece of fiction. This is a new journal, started in summer 2016, published biannually online and in print. David Haglund is the Managing Editor of PEN America, the literary magazine published by PEN American Center. He has written articles and reviews for Slate, The London Review of Books, The New York Times Book Review, Bookforum, and other publications, and serves on the board of the National Book Critics Circle and as the poetry editor of Dialogue. He studied English and American literature at the University of Chicago and Oxford and he has taught literature and writing at Harvard, Oxford, and Hunter College.

What has always stuck with me about the VIDA count isn’t the statistics themselves—horrid but not, if you’re from any underrepresented group, shocking—but the discussion, mostly anecdotal, of how women are not repeat submitters to literary magazines; men are more likely to send out again once they’ve been rejected. This was me: I have many kind rejections, years old, that say “please send again,” or “we’d like to see more work,” and yet, I didn’t.

Jolee Rogers was born in Marrero, Louisiana. She moved to Franklinton, Louisiana around second grade. She graduated from Franklinton High School and is currently studying graphic art at Louisiana Tech University. She grew up with a mother, a father, two siblings, and her grandmother. She normally keeps to herself and is only talkative when she feels that she is in a comfortable environment. When Jolee first started writing, she did it to release her stress and anxiety. Darrien Hertzler was born in Augusta, Maine as the first child of two military parents who are now divorced, so she has lived in several places. Most of her poetry is usually about her fiancée and the troubles they face in a long-distance relationship. She also writes about other events from her life in which she has experienced abuse, violence, addictions, and unacceptance. She tries her best not to sensor or sugarcoat her world because she feels that it makes it less realistic and less likely to speak to people.
