Ofelia the Saint takes place between 1954 and 1979, during a period in which the Mexican economy boomed with rapid industrialization which included the mining industry. It centers around a young woman named Ofelia who rises up against a multinational mining company (Empreza Stil) that forces itself upon her ancestral land and traces her passage from birth to womanhood, challenging authority and inspiring the women in her village to break away from gender constraints and reclaim their land along the way. Goodison's collection explores the lives of a range of people who find themselves at a pivotal point in life, often brought there through unpredictable, unseen forces. The characters are seemingly ordinary individuals -- teachers, shoemakers, shop clerks -- who at some point reveal themselves to be loners, dissidents, artists, seekers and sages; essentially, representatives of traditions under test. The many material fetishisms of modern life never satisfy or replace our individual desires, and so these characters attempt to offer new perspectives, new ways to look at the world that’s already around them. This creative thesis is a memoir dedicated to a close examination of a childhood taking place in a meth ridden midwestern town, under the supervision of meth addicted parents. Using both prose and poetry to explore small excerpts of memory in a sequential vignette form, this memoir follows the author through early adolescents to middle school, tackling issues such as addiction in the home, prostitution, homelessness, and incarceration as well as more domestic points of interest like sibling bonds, childhood roleplay, and parent/child relationships.
