"Near Sequoia movie theatre in downtown Mill Valley, in the space now occupied by Champagne French Bakery, I shared many lunches with the late, great Marin County writer Gina Berriault. I was her student then (MA in English: Creative Writing, SF State, 1983) and she was my thesis advisor, a one-to-one mentor relationship that did not involve a classroom full of other needy writing students. I cherished this focused attention: all about me. My maternal grandmother Ruth never missed an episode of the game show Jeopardy! One night in 2008, while I was working on my dissertation about a long-forgotten aviatrix with whom my family and I share connections, Grandma Ruth called to tell me about a Jeopardy! clue she had just heard: "The first woman to fly across the English Channel." My grandmother was reserved and soft-spoken, but I imagine her slapping the armrests of the recliner, disturbing the outstretched cat at her side, and beating all three contestants to the buzzer: "Who is Harriet Quimby?"--the subject of my dissertation.

This collection of poetry explores the multiple tipping points facing humanity at the opening of the 21st century and the end of the industrial age. Resource depletion, species loss and global warming are just a few of the existential threats examined in this work. I believe that the way beyond these crises requires examining the narratives we're inherited and imagining new tales of people, place and planet that can deliver us to a more ecologically just future. This thesis is an offering toward that end. At the Unmaking is a lament for what we have lost and are losing. …
