Rambling through the Heart of it All is a collection of short stories crafted with special focus on the experience of living where Midwestern agriculture and industry seep in to the low hills of Appalachia. Each story is set in rural Ohio and offers a glimpse of characters seeking to understand their individual identities while interacting in small- town communities. Poverty, Christian faith, heritage, isolation, loss, determination, nature, family tradition, and relationships tangle through the life of each character. In the Young Adult novel The Consort, seventeen year old Rowan must learn to navigate both sides of the sexual spectrum in the totalitarian theocracy of The Empire. When Rowan isn't selected to serve deity at the age of twelve, which she feels is her right, she loses faith in the religion that has ruled her since birth. She begins to notice the tight leash the government and the church have on its citizens and she silently questions its truthfulness through subtle rebellion which puts her at risk for Re-Education and possible death. This thesis presents a study in creative fantasy by detailing plans for an original novel with the purpose of entertaining, instructing, and encouraging young readers. The novel will fall under the genre of fairy tale and will be set in a fantasy world, but will exhibit realism in the personalities of its characters. The story will appeal to middle school and junior high readers through its presentation of the first person perspective of a young girl grappling with issues relating to family, friendship, and forgiveness. In the popular imagination, public housing tenants are considered, at best, victims of intractable poverty and, at worst, criminals. More Than Shelter makes clear that such limited perspectives do not capture the rich reality of tenants’ active engagement in shaping public housing into communities. By looking closely at three public housing projects in San Francisco, Amy L. Howard brings to light the dramatic measures tenants have taken to create—and sustain and strengthen—communities that mattered to them.
