Illustrated Tales Of Little Sister Fox: Stories About A Clever Fox From Russian Fairytales, Rachel W. Smoot
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis examines the interaction of pictures and words in children’s storybooks. The illustrations placed alongside the text of the book are just as important to understanding the story as are the words. “Illustrated Tales of Little Sister Fox” combines elements of several traditional Russian folktales into a single story. Illustrations are hand sketched and digitally painted.

A Stirring Of Cultures: The Contest For Place, Belonging And Identity In Australia, Garry Stewart Henderson
A Stirring Of Cultures: The Contest For Place, Belonging And Identity In Australia, Garry Stewart Henderson
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The creative work, The Wounded Sinner, and the accompanying exegesis, form a volume of writing that considers aspects of place and belonging in a contemporary Australian context through the agencies of Aboriginality, migration and homelessness. While these issues are present and, at times, contentious in the structure of modern Australian society they have roots in past eras of empire building, racism and the movement from agrarianism to industrialisation. The characters are drawn from my own experiences and, as such, validate both the creative work and give the exegesis substance.

Getting Away: Three Chapters Of A Novel Draft, Martin M. Chaffee
Getting Away: Three Chapters Of A Novel Draft, Martin M. Chaffee
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis consists of three chapters of a novel in progress. Getting Out is the story of Joel and Sarah Bauer, a couple in their mid-twenties who teach at an international school in Maracaibo, Venezuela. They are struggling to break the news to Sarah’s conservative Christian parents, Bill and Cindy, that they are planning to make a career as international teachers instead of returning home as previously planned. Anticipating that Bill and Cindy will receive the news poorly, Joel and Sarah have decided to fly her parents to Maracaibo to break the news. But on the morning of her parents' …
Unsettle Me, Lanie King Anderson
Unsettle Me, Lanie King Anderson
Honors Theses
This book is about my journey of faith in Jesus Christ during my undergraduate studies at the University of Mississippi. I read memoirs about others' spiritual journeys and studied their writing styles and storytelling methods before beginning my own memoir about my moments of spiritual unsettledness in school. I am convinced that the college experience, if whole-heartedly embraced, changes people. As a student, I have grown personally, cognitively, socially, and culturally in four years, such a short time for such change and growth. But I have especially grown spiritually because of my experiences in college. Questions have arisen about my …
Science-Fictional North Korea: A Defective History, Seo-Young J. Chu
Science-Fictional North Korea: A Defective History, Seo-Young J. Chu
Publications and Research
- Kafkaesque, Orwellian, eerie, surreal, bizarre, grotesque, alien, wacky, fascinating, dystopian, illusive, theatrical, antic, haunting, apocalyptic: these are just a few of the vaguely science-fictional adjectives that are now associated with North Korea. At the same time, North Korea has become an oddly convenient trope for a certain aesthetic – an uncanny opacity; an ominous mystique – that many writers and artists have exploited to generate striking science-fictional effects in texts with little or no connection to North Korean reality. (The 2002 Bond film Die another Day, for example, draws from North Korea’s science-fictional aura to animate North Korean super-villains who …

Dorholt: An Original Fairy Tale As A Study In Creative Fantasy, Amy Conrad
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis presents a study in creative fantasy by detailing plans for an original novel with the purpose of entertaining, instructing, and encouraging young readers. The novel will fall under the genre of fairy tale and will be set in a fantasy world, but will exhibit realism in the personalities of its characters. The story will appeal to middle school and junior high readers through its presentation of the first person perspective of a young girl grappling with issues relating to family, friendship, and forgiveness. This thesis will include the rationale for the project as well as chapter synopses and …
Trailer Hitched: A One Act Play, Shelby K. Grady
Trailer Hitched: A One Act Play, Shelby K. Grady
Honors Theses
This thesis investigates the creative process of writing and developing a written piece of theatre. It delves into the methods of preparing to write a play (plot outlines, character descriptions, writing exercises), the maturation of the story throughout the writing process (enhanced by workshops, journal writing, and the reading of published plays), as well as the progression of the project through varying stages of revision (aided by readings of the work, feedback from peers and advisors, and consideration of criticism). The thesis is a culmination of the aforementioned exploration, resulting in a complete one act play as well as an …
