Up until recently, my holocaust education had been handed down to me through books and lectures. My vision of Auschwitz was represented by glossy black and white photos of shambling skeletons being led out of the maw of a wrought iron and brick monster, and to be honest, it is easy to confront a monster when it only exists in a book.

To prepare for this trip I took Dr. Finley-Croswhite’s “Vichy and the French Holocaust” class as well as Dr. Bebber’s “Holocaust and Memory” class. I wanted to have a broad awareness of the subject before I traveled, and I felt both classes would (and have) enhanced my journey. So when we flew out I had a good understanding, not only of the Holocaust and what happened, but also some background of French history during this time period.

To me, the Holocaust is the ever-present reminder of the reasons behind and the importance of the existence of the State of Israel. When in France I asked the panel of Auschwitz survivors on how they felt things were in France, a nation with a history of anti-Semitism. The answer from Ester Sénot was the most shocking and also the most telling. The intent of this thesis is to create a literary fiction collection centered on diverse adolescent girls. In recent years, women writers have moved away from the domestic sphere of authors whose writing focused solely on the daily lives of women, and have begun penning epic stories and novels whose themes were previously tackled by men alone. Authors show that the craft of expansive and immersive literary fiction transcends gender, allowing women more freedom with the types of stories they choose to write. I think that very early into this trip, the rest of my group realized that I like to take pictures. I took pictures of everything. I joked about running out of space on my computer because of so many pictures. Well, that actually happened! I came home after this ten day trip with 6000 pictures, which I am still sifting through. I feel as if I have been looking at pictures non-stop since I came home.

Americans And Climate Change: Transnationalism And Reflection In Environmental Writing, Brian Glaser

This article reads three American works of climate change life writing in order to examine how print culture in America is responding to growing awareness of the threat of global climate change. Engaging with Ursula Heise’s work on American environmental writing, I argue against a binary conception of cosmopolitan and provincial responses to this threat, seeking to show how ambitious individual reactions to climate change are complicated and enhanced by ways of relating and collaborating with other humans and other species.

This article offers a reading of Robert Pinsky’s “Essay on Psychiatrists” in the context of a contemporary theoretical work by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Anti-Oedipus. I do not use the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari to make interpretive comments about poetry, to identify or articulate meanings. Rather I read Pinsky’s poem in the context of the philosophy, noting points of agreement between the two texts, areas where the poetry works as a supplement to the insights of the philosophy, places where the poetry offers grounds for criticisms of the philosophy and times where there might be irreconcilable differences in …

The Lord Of The Rings And The Weight Of Two Worlds: An Exploration Of Faith In Fantasy, Danielle Myers

This project is two-fold. The first section attempts to determine what it is that makes Tolkien’s writing, specifically within The Lord of the Rings, stand out against other Christian fantasy, particularly within modern evangelical culture. The purpose of this is to determine how he uses faith within his fantasy differently, and makes that faith-based writing meaningful to his readers without leaving them feeling preached-at. The second section is an excerpt of my own novel, The Weight of Two Worlds, in which I have attempted to use Tolkien’s methods to incorporate faith in my fantasy writing.

The creative work, The Wounded Sinner, and the accompanying exegesis, form a volume of writing that considers aspects of place and belonging in a contemporary Australian context through the agencies of Aboriginality, migration and homelessness. While these issues are present and, at times, contentious in the structure of modern Australian society they have roots in past eras of empire building, racism and the movement from agrarianism to industrialisation. The characters are drawn from my own experiences and, as such, validate both the creative work and give the exegesis substance.

Feeling The Fleshed Body: The Aftermath Of Childhood Rape [Thesis], Brenda Downing

The point of propulsion for this research is my raped and censured body with its somatic aftermath narrative. This doctoral research project is a feminist and creative investigation that sought to uncover and articulate the long term somatic impacts of childhood rape as they manifest in the adult female body. I employed a multi-modal, complementary, and embodied methodology using a combination of autoethnography, somatic inquiry, writing-as-inquiry, and performance-making-as inquiry. In addition to my autoethnographic explorations, I gathered information from other women raped in childhood, as well as information from women’s healthcare professionals.
