There's a Reason One Thing Always Leads io Something More is a collection of poems that explore ideas of hunger from my own personal understanding of its metaphors as a white, American, feminist woman. This theme of desire branches out to show the body's dance with addiction, want and need, indulgence, and consumption, at odds with the need for limitations, portions, control, boundary, and responsibility to the self and community. The essays in this collection explore the resistance to and simultaneous need for human connections. In order to illustrate this concept, I use myself as an example of an individual who both longs for and despises her dependence on other people in order to support and define her. The essays are not presented in a traditional chronological format, but instead reflect the chronology of my own realization of the theme of this work. The essay titles are drawn from popular music, intended to mimic the contents of an MP3 player, which reflects the owner's personality, wants and needs. The structure …

"November Days" is a nonfiction story about a teenage girl diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 15 in 1983. It goes back and forth between her sickness and death and the impact that it still has on her family and friends thirty years later. It is a story about love and loss and the family that has never recovered.

wordriver is a literary journal dedicated to the poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction of adjunct, part-time and fulltime instructors teaching under a semester or yearly contract in our universities, colleges, and community colleges worldwide. Graduate student teachers who have used up their teaching assistant time and are teaching with adjunct contracts for the remainder of their graduate program are also eligible.
We’re looking for work that demonstrates the creativity and craft of adjunct/part-time instructors in English and other disciplines. We reserve first publication rights and onetime anthology publication rights for all work published. We do not accept simultaneous submissions.
