Beyond Words: Chronicling Spiritual Ecstasy And Experience In Sufi Poetry, Kate Van Brocklin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of this research was to understand the primary form of expression within Sufism—poetry. I focused on two of the most famous Sufi poems in Morocco, the al-Burda and al-Hamziya, and investigated how these poems are used in ceremonies today, and to what extent and why they hold significance. Key components to this project were my visits to the Boudchichi zaouia in the Rabat medina to see how these poems invoke spirituality, community, faith and remembrance. I also considered the Western interest in Sufi poetry to explore how these poems shape Western perceptions of Islam today.

This creative nonfiction thesis contains four stories written while I was a student in the Master of Fine Arts Program from June 2008 through December 2011. All four represent experimentation with form and are in progress. The theme of a common person faced with uncommon challenges runs through all the stories, which are based on numerous interviews, extensive research of National Labor Relations Board hearing transcripts and findings, civil and circuit court transcripts, government findings, and published ai1icles. Topics include labor fights at Smithfield Foods' Tar Heel slaughtering facility, military sexual trauma, wrongful criminal conviction, and victim misidentification.

The idea of joining a conversation through reading and writing is not new; in his 1941 book "The Philosophy of Literary Form: Studies in Symbolic Action," Kenneth Burke suggests that the acts of reading and writing are like entering a parlor where others are already conversing. The author explores the place of professional debate within NCTE and in the pages of "English Journal". Regardless, by reading these pages, one is entering into a conversation that is already underway.

This thesis examines the role of language and its' power in abusive relationships. The thesis consists of two sections. The first section is a personal narrative. It is composed of chapters focusing on the author's extensive history in abusive relationships. Each chapter reveals a different relationship, including the abusive language used in it. Dialog used in such relationships plays a crucial role throughout the piece. The second section is a theoretical analysis of abuse. The focus on dialog is reiterated in this part. Mormon authors are making big splashes in the world of young adult (YA) literature, a relatively young genre that is targeted at readers from age 12 to age 18. Since 1967, when the American Library Association officially recognized YA literature as separate from children's books, writers and publishers have been trying to define the genre. It is, in a sense, coming of age. Generally, to be considered YA, a book has to have a teenage protagonist in situations with which a teenage reader can identify.
