This thesis takes the form of a memoir, exploring the possibility of finding meaning in personal narratives by applying the archetypal structure of myth and legend. Using the Quest for the Holy Grail as an analogy for the author's life, personal essays are arranged in relation to the stages of the Grail Quest, as they reflect the author's search for wholeness. Referring to Carl Jung's extensive work with the mandala as a visual symbol of the self, Emma Jung's work on the Grail Quest as an archetypal representation of human psychological growth toward a unified self, and Anthony Giddens's research …

This is a collection of three personal essays, two of which are each coupled with an encyclopedia article also written by the author that deals with significant places in the author's life. Through the experience of writing in diverse forms, the author seeks to resolve for himself the connections between personal writing and more formal genres. As a common subject linking the two different types of writing, the concept of “place” is also explored. The author discusses relevant influences on his writing, reflects on the experience of writing in two different forms and discusses some conclusions in an afterward.

In movies, there are certain conventions that identify a film with a particular genre: a typical western has cowboys; a superhero movie may star a gifted protagonist; or an adventure film could feature exotic locations. Such is also the case with film noir, a movement characterized by storylines featuring criminal elements and their tensions with the police, stylized black-and-white cinematography, and a seedy, nightmarish cityscape. This thesis comprises a novel entitled Carly's Dance and an essay entitled As the Owl Discreet. Although separate works, a line runs through them that might be described as an urge to connect; each work, although self-contained, is concerned with the co-existence of opposites, or more precisely, apparent opposites. The essay's title is ironic, borrowed from Hillaire Belloc's perverse verses collected as Cautionary Tales. Discretion is exactly what the thesis tests the bounds of, as do the characters in my novel. And so do I, in using family history to motivate my research.

In the Spin is a semi-autobiographical collection of poetry, dealing primarily with themes of family, marital infidelity, loyalty, the female body, and the tension between political vs. aesthetic existence. This is a collection of poems influenced by the work of French Feminism, Shakespeare and Faulkner, and hybrid lyric-narrative poets of the last fifty years.

Articles

In "Reviewing the Author-Function in the Age of Wikipedia," Amit Ray and Erhardt Graeff examine how wiki technology challenges traditional concepts of authorship and authority in knowledge production. The authors build on poststructuralist theory, particularly Roland Barthes's "Death of the Author" and Michel Foucault's concept of the "author-function," to analyze how wikis destabilize individual authorship in favor of collaborative, community-driven content creation.
