Fire and Ice is comprised of five stories, each of which features a female protagonist at a crossroads in her life. Each of these women pursues a quest for personal fulfillment in the face of her shifting familial and emotional landscape. The stories deal primarily with domestic issues, such as childbearing, marital relationships, aging parents and personal faith. Though each woman feels alone in her individual incidence of alienation and loss, the stories imply the universality of each of these life-altering situations. Imagery is often defined as language that appeals to the senses. Imagery, however, is the meat of any poem, and going beyond this simplistic definition. One of the most important functions of imagery is to help establish tone, and relationship between imagery and tone enables a poem to describe, declare, assert, or imagine-to use voices that are objective, personal, opinionated, or wildly speculative.

Tonally, the poems were aggressive, and something had to temper their edge. I went to the other extreme, looking to the most basic function of imagery-description. Obviously, all poems are, on some level, descriptive. Descriptive imagery is …

Reparations, my first collection of poems, is a book in which I pay homage to my African ancestors by striving, through poetry, to repair the spiritual, mental, and physical damage that I have experienced and continue to experience via personal and societal ideologies. Though Reparations cannot totally restore me, I believe poetry can aid my efforts at self-restoration and help me honor my ancestors, their determination to overcome all odds. I believe Reparations can work to provide some repair because the act of writing a poem forces the poet to reflect on his or her life.

In February of 1980, Joe Kohn arrived in my dorm room at Saint Bonaventure University where I was then a freshman. For the next several months we talked about my planned bicycle trip across the United States, recounted his own ride to Brazil, and uncovered dark stories from his three years in Zaire. One night he told me of an idea he had: He planned to canoe the entire length of the Congo River alone. For the following year or so, we mapped routes and studied the dangers. That literature has not entirely lost its means when faced with great human tragedies is a fact widely debated when it comes to the Holocaust. This text relies on a discussion of the unspeakable in order to reflect on the texts written about Rwanda’s genocide. Reading those texts’ thresholds reveals a tension of writing between history and fiction, “devoir de mémoire” and near resignation of speech.

Trackers is a collection of short stories that attest to the oddities and complexities found even in the non-exotic middle-class American suburbs. The characters in these stories experience disappointments that result from the physical and emotional distancing of families. In "Tokens," a woman's attempts at revenge on her cheating husband are unsatisfying because she ends up feeling more alone than before. In "Trackers," eleven-year old Richard hunts for Bigfoot as he and his family cope with the emotional aftermath of his sister's suicide attempt.
