This is a novel about a hack of a novelist who guides a fraud of a novelist around an allegorical version of the United States of America. It tests the limits of its readers’ patience with irony and metafiction. Themes that are explored, mocked, and then explored again include belief, identity, reality, geography, the intersections of the aforementioned, and the comical futility of such exploration. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

"Love From All To All": The Letters Of Peter Taylor To John Anderson Thompson, 1939-1952, Michaux Dempster

This project consists of the transcription and annotation of a group of letters from the writer Peter Taylor to his friend John Anderson Thompson, a professor of English and literary critic. There are sixty letters, going from 1939 to 1952. They contain important biographical information about Taylor's life, including his relationships with his wife, the poet Eleanor Ross Taylor, his parents, Hillsman and Katherine Taylor, and contemporaries such as Robert Lowell, Jean Stafford, and Robert Penn Warren. The letters also provide a record of the progress of Taylor's novella A Woman of Means. The development of the Creative Writing …

Valley of the Wave is a novella about friendship, loss, and letting go. Anna and Samantha are best friends when Anna commits suicide, and the story follows Sam as she struggles to learn the truth behind her friend's death. This is a project I have been working on for several years, through several forms and formats, and it holds a special place in my heart.

The Freudian concept of thanatos, the death instinct, plays a pivotal role in the following collection of fiction and poetry, and also in the nonfictional introductory chapter. In the tradition of Poe, unreliable narrators of questionable morality are used to explore, through fiction, the psychological characteristics of this death instinct, while in the poetry, the subject matter and perspective has been strongly influenced by Ai's work. The collection of short stories bound here have many threads in common-though they vary in significant ways. The mood of each story is somber, yet poignant. Characters and objects come together to create moments of subtle epiphany, or marry two opposites giving birth to a perspective both new and different. It would seem death, dying, and blood pervade the text when in actuality, the maternal, mothers, and mothering are what signal these stories as a complete collection.
