The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
Charles Dickens proved himself a careful observer of working-class oppression in Victorian England, both of men and women, and of causes economic, social, and personal. But as PETER SCHECKNER amply demonstrates, Dickens offered them little means of righting the political and economic order that significantly contributed to their plight. A revolutionary Dickens was not. Professor of English at Ramapo College of New Jersey, Scheckner is the author of Class, Politics, and the Individual: A Study of the Major Works of D. H. Aflame to grow, to flicker, and at last be an ember
To enrich our lives for years to remember
How we cherish and love you, your innocent glee,
You, the miracle of warmth and sensitivity.
My mother wrote this poem when I was …
