Interspecies Responsivity In Early Modern Drama And Animal Performances, Taylor C. Culbert
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation proposes an expansive, interspecies definition of performance that uses behavior rather than cognition as the decisive feature and illustrates how such a definition can reshape our approach to theatre and performance history. Using the concept of responsivity, which refers to the embodied and affective ways that humans and non-human animals acknowledge and react to one another, I trace human–animal interactions across a variety of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century performance genres, from the aristocratic stag hunt and entertainments involving trained animals to the plays of Molière and Shakespeare. In A Dark Wood Amid The Storm: Literary Representations Of Midlife In The Social And Political Turbulence Of A Kindred Era, Robert Mccreanor

The apparent parallels between the social and political crises of the 19-teens’s to 1930’s and those of today is a source of popular fascination and commentary. Some have argued that much of our current anxieties about impending global doom harken back to the widespread doomsaying of exactly a century ago in relation to World War I, the 1918 Spanish Influenza and the rising authoritarianism of the 1930’s. For many years, I have been an active member of the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations and Editor-in-Chief of its journal, the Comparative Civilizations Review. Since the 1960s, I have also been a university administrator and a professor, globe-trotting to learn about societies near and far, their rises and falls. Yet even though I lived and worked in Prague, as president of a university, not far from the Polish border, I had never set foot in that country, notwithstanding that my paternal grandfather came from there.

During his last years (1915–1916) Natsume Sōseki was often troubled by the stomach ailment that eventually took his life at age 49. Constrained by his illness to remain at his home in Waseda, a Tokyo suburb, he nevertheless continued to work on his novels and to write columns for publication in the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.
Within My Glass Doors collects those 39 columns; in them he discusses his visitors, his illness, memories of his childhood and family, and interactions with colleagues new and old. The most autobiographical and revealing of all his writings, this collection of essays displays his remarkable …
