Rereading Nick Joaquin As A Devil’S Advocate “La Naval De Manila” (1943) In Context, Luisa L. Gomez
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
Nick Joaquin characterized himself as a “devil’s advocate” for taking contrarian positions in Philippine cultural history. His early essay “ La Naval de Manila” is taken as an example of such. A re-examination of the essay within its original context of the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, however, reveals that Joaquin’s early historical imagination must be understood less as an act of rebellion and more as a product of negotiation. It navigates multiple audiences and overlapping empires—the Spanish past it venerates, the American period whose language it uses, and the Japanese present that enabled its publication. This paper examines Walter Benjamin's engagement with the motif of Heim (home) as it interweaves with his intellectual and personal experiences during the early 1920s. Through an analysis of Benjamin’s writings and correspondence, including his plans for the journal Angelus Novus and reflections on his friendship with Fritz Heinle, the study explores Heim as both a real and rhetorical space. Initially conceived as an idealized site of intellectual and spiritual communion, Heim is transformed by personal tragedy and historical crisis into an unattainable, speculative ideal—a rhetorical atopos. This evolution parallels Benjamin’s philosophical pursuit of “pure language” and his reimagining …

In putting a literary work into another language, the translator functions as a literary critic, whose task requires both language competence and critical perception. As Venuti writes, “A translation does not communicate the source text itself but the translator’s interpretation of it”. The translation, therefore, can be considered as another form of literary criticism, inspiring the reader to enrich the repertoire of the source text. A comparative reading of the source text against the translation engages the reader in processing three-fold interpretations, leading to a multifaceted communication among the source text, the translator and the reader. Any form of audio-visual media utilises specific stylistic elements in order to represent the reality within which the media form is situated. These representations occur through the language and iconography of the media form, which works on stereotypical features that the audience can easily identify. Forming a pivotal part of the media, these representations must be rendered in the translations for a linguistically and culturally diverse audience. Audio-Visual Translation (AVT) has been used since the 1930s to make media accessible. Of the various modalities, subtitling has emerged as the most widespread mode of AVT due to time and cost benefits. …

Untangling Memories Of Violence: The Khipu In El Rincón De Los Muertos (Alfredo Pita), Jonathan J. Oliveri

This research proposes a structural reading of El rincón de los muertos to decode and trace echoes to the khipu which are embedded throughout the novel. Contrary to a graphic writing system, the Incan empire’s khipu (khipu) was a mnemotechnic system—a three-dimensional communicative device, an archive of memory that recorded information using different colored strings, and a system of knots. Our concept of mnemonics is different than that of the indigenous communities who relied on oral tradition and specifically for khipu a khipukamayuq (reader of khipu), in a narrative and discursive manner, to reconstruct the message the khipu contained. …

I propose an examination of the relationship of contemporary Odesan writers to the Russian language. The Life of Omar ibn Said (1831) is a narrative written by an enslaved person in Arabic and went through multiple English translations over the centuries. This article examines the ways in which these translations involve the nineteenth-century Christian agenda as well as the translators’ decisions in the twentieth-first century that multiply Omar ibn Said’s voice. In response to the recent scholarship’s effort to find Omar’s “true self” in his writings, which shows the meshing of Christian and Islamic faith, I aim to foreground his voice as a powerful presence at the intersections of the two languages and religions. Materiality Of Traumatic Experience And The Limits Of Representation In Hassan Bani Ameri’S Gonjeshkha Behesht Ra Mifahmand (Sparrows Understand Heaven), Maryam Ghodrati

This paper examines the materialization of trauma as both a narrative and embodied phenomenon in Hassan Bani Ameri’s 2006 novel, Gonjeshkha Behesht ra Mifahmand, using contemporary narrative and trauma theory. The postmodernist narrative, told from the perspective of a photojournalist, reconstructs events surrounding the death of a celebrated Iran-Iraq War commander. I argue that traumatic truths resist full integration into conventional frameworks of understanding, evident in the novel’s non-linear, fragmented narrative and its shift from visual realism to confessional surrealism in an ending that challenges traditional storytelling and historical documentation. Chaucer’s Complaint to His Purse concerns more than the poet’s financial need under the new Lancastrian administration. It speaks to the limits of Henry IV’s royal authority and, through irony, to the limitations of Chaucer’s purse’s power. Underlining royal limits, Chaucer petitions the king as one who holds office through election and line but not con-quest, which is Henry’s position on his office as well. In speaking iron-ically of the purse’s authority, the poet addresses the gold that the mon-arch might grant him as if it constituted a human or divine patron, but he does so in a hierarchy of …

This article studies the role of ‘selving’ and creative interpretation in literary translation. Specifically, it analyzes one of Basil Bunting’s successful translations of Obayd Zākānī’s Mush-o Gorbeh, a picturesque and catchy poem in rhyme and rhythm, laden with animal characters, which was considered to be both a masterpiece of children’s literature and a very important political satire. Bunting, a translator of Persian classical poems into English, had both political and poetic missions as a spy and an up-and-coming poet. This study turns to the theories of translation by Steiner, Benjamin, and Bassnett, among others, to show the challenges of translating …

This article examines female authority and self-determination in relation to maternal lactation during early medieval England. While breastfeeding has always been essential to infant survival, its cultural significance extends beyond nourishment alone, reflecting broader social values and assumptions about gender and motherhood. Within this context, early English texts reveal that lactating mothers were regarded as natural authorities in the processes of childbearing and nourishing their infants. Through analysis of historical and literary evidence, this article argues that maternal breastfeeding was viewed in inherently positive and empowering terms with maternal self-determination and authority at the heart of that positivity. However, there are relatively few examples of scholarly publications that coherently organize these visual representations into a complete analysis of the topic. This thesis explores connections between the Kantian sublime and Anne Carson’s ideas regarding “eros.” Since Kant’s Critique of Judgement was published in 1790, the Kantian sublime has grown in popularity and been utilized by theorists and creative writers alike. While the Kantian sublime is often associated with nature in popular culture, there are certain egocentric and phallocentric elements of this mode of thinking that might inhibit a biocentric mindset. This dissertation examines the work of contemporary Mapuche poets Adriana Pinda, Maribel Mora Curriao and Roxana Miranda Rupailaf, alongside Basque poets Leire Bilbao and Miren Agur Meabe, who write partially or entirely in their native languages— Mapudungun and Basque— as a form of resistance against the historical and ongoing imposition of Spanish. Through their poetry, these poets defend their identities and cultural heritage, invoking their matrilineal lineage to remember and heal. They also subvert traditional Catholic prayers by modifying them into invocations to Goddesses, casting spells of liberation of the female body, denouncing patriarchal violence and recreating alternative worlds. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อจัดทำประมวลศัพท์เรื่องกาแฟพิเศษ โดยรวบรวมคำศัพท์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับกระบวนการแปรรูปกาแฟ การคั่วกาแฟ การบดกาแฟ การชงกาแฟ ตลอดจนการประเมินคุณภาพกาแฟ จุดมุ่งหมายหลักคือเพื่อศึกษาทฤษฎีทางศัพทวิทยาที่เกี่ยวข้อง รวมถึงระเบียบวิธีและกระบวนการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์ พร้อมทั้งจัดทำประมวลศัพท์เรื่องกาแฟพิเศษอย่างเป็นระบบ เพื่อให้ผู้ที่เกี่ยวข้องในศาสตร์กาแฟพิเศษ รวมถึงผู้ที่ทำงานด้านกาแฟ นักแปล ล่าม และผู้สนใจสามารถนำประมวลศัพท์นี้ไปใช้เพื่อการอ้างอิงได้ในการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์นี้ อาศัยการศึกษาและนำทฤษฎีทางศัพทวิทยาและแนวทางการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์ของนักศัพทวิทยาหลายท่านมาปรับใช้ โดยกระบวนการทำงานแบ่งออกเป็น 5 ขั้นตอนสำคัญ ได้แก่ (1) การกำหนดหัวข้อ ขอบเขตของการวิจัย กลุ่มเป้าหมาย และวัตถุประสงค์ในการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์ (2) การศึกษาทฤษฎีและระเบียบวิธีในการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์ (3) การรวบรวมและศึกษาข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับกาแฟพิเศษเพื่อนำมาจัดทำคลังข้อมูลภาษาและคัดศัพท์จากคลังข้อมูลภาษา (4) การกำหนดมโนทัศน์สัมพันธ์ระหว่างศัพท์ที่คัดเลือก และ (5) การจัดทำบันทึกข้อมูลศัพท์เบื้องต้นและบันทึกข้อมูลศัพท์เพื่อนำเสนอศัพท์เทียบเคียงในภาษาไทยผลลัพธ์ของงานวิจัยนี้คือ ประมวลศัพท์เรื่องกาแฟพิเศษซึ่งประกอบด้วยศัพท์ทั้งหมด 37 คำ โดยนำเสนอเป็นกลุ่มมโนทัศน์สัมพันธ์และลำดับของมโนทัศน์สัมพันธ์ โดยการนำเสนอแต่ละศัพท์ประกอบด้วยศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษ ศัพท์เทียบเคียงในภาษาไทย คำนิยาม ประเภททางไวยากรณ์ หมวดหมู่ บริบทอ้างอิงที่พบศัพท์ดังกล่าว มโนทัศน์สัมพันธ์พร้อมประเภทของความสัมพันธ์ รูปทางภาษาอื่นของศัพท์และข้อมูลอ้างอิง เพื่อให้เห็นลักษณะและความสัมพันธ์ ตลอดจนรูปแบบการใช้ของศัพท์ดังกล่าวอย่างชัดเจน อันเป็นประโยชน์ต่อการใช้ศัพท์เฉพาะในเชิงวิชาการและการสื่อสารในแวดวงได้อย่างถูกต้อง

งานวิจัยภายใต้หัวข้อ รัฐ กลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ และความสัมพันธ์เชิงอำนาจในวรรณกรรมและภาพยนตร์ผีไทยมุ่งศึกษาการนำเสนอตัวละครกลุ่มคนชายขอบ โดยเฉพาะกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ ที่ปรากฏตัวในรูปแบบของภูตผีปีศาจจากตัวบทคัดสรร ผู้วิจัยตีความและวิเคราะห์ตัวบททั้งวรรณกรรมและภาพยนตร์แนวแฟนตาซีสยองขวัญในฐานะพื้นที่ของการเล่าเรื่อง เรื่องเล่าที่ถูกนำเสนอทั้งหมดเป็นผลผลิตทางสังคมและถือเป็นปรากฏการณ์เฉพาะที่ผู้เล่าทั้งผู้ประพันธ์และผู้กำกับเชื่อมโยงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกลุ่มชาติพันธ์กับภูตผีปีศาจภายใต้บริบทสังคมร่วมสมัย ทั้งนี้ ผู้วิจัยได้สำรวจตรวจสอบและรวบรวมตัวบทเพื่อศึกษาโดยมองหาเกณฑ์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวบทในประเด็นข้างต้น คือการผูกโยงภูตผีปีศาจกับกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ ได้แก่ ตุ๊กตา (2530) ของวาณิช จรุงกิจอนันต์ ตะเคียน (2546) กํากับโดยเฉลิม วงศ์พิมพ์ ห้าแพร่ง ตอน Backpackers (2552) กํากับโดยทรงยศ สุขมากอนันต์ หญิงเสา (2554) ของกล้า สมุทวณิช ลัดดาแลนด์ (2554) กํากับโดยโสภณ ศักดาพิศิษฏ์ Karma ตัดกรรมต่อตาย (2555) ของปองวุฒิ GTH Side Stories ตอนมะขิ่น (2556) กํากับโดยโสภณ ศักดาพิศิษฏ์ ผีทวงคืน (2557) กํากับโดยอำนาจ แตงสมบูรณ์และศักดิ์ชาย ดีนาน บองสรันโอน (2558) กํากับโดยศิวาภรณ์ (หรือมนัสนันท์) พงษ์สุวรรณและ Tweet Trace ภาพลวงตาย (2559) ของธุวัฒธรรพ์ ตัวบทคัดสรรทั้ง 10 เรื่องช่วยชี้ให้เห็นความสำคัญของการเลือกสรรอัตลักษณ์ผีแต่ละชนิดเพื่อนำเสนอภาพแทนกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์แต่ละกลุ่ม รวมถึงการสอดแทรกประเด็นปรากฏการณ์สังคมภายใต้กลวิธีการเล่าเรื่องอย่างเฉพาะเจาะจงที่ทั้งแตกต่างและสัมพันธ์กันระหว่างตัวบท นอกจากนี้ ตัวบทคัดสรรยังเผยให้เห็นร่องรอยประวัติศาสตร์บาดแผลที่ขาดหายไปในประวัติศาสตร์กระแสหลัก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งอารมณ์ความรู้สึกและบทบาทของคนชายขอบกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ท่ามกลางประวัติศาสตร์การพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและสังคมสู่ระบบทุนนิยมของประเทศไทยตั้งแต่ช่วงทศวรรษ 2520 จนถึงทศวรรษ 2550

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ของแม่ผู้อพยพจากสงครามเวียดนามกับลูกชายเควียร์เวียดนามพลัดถิ่นในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาในตัวบทคัดสรร โดยมุ่งสำรวจให้เห็นบทบาทของบาดแผลที่เชื่อมร้อยคนสองรุ่นเข้าไว้ด้วยกัน รวมทั้งการแสวงหาพื้นที่แห่งการเยียวยาสำหรับกลุ่มคนชายขอบ กลุ่มตัวบทคัดสรรได้แก่ On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (2019) ของ โอเชียน วอง (Ocean Vuong) The Magic Fish (2020) ของ จุง เล เหงวียน (Trung Le Nguyen) และ Things We Lost to the Water (2021) ของ เอริค เหงวียน (Eric Nguyen) จากการศึกษาพบว่า ตัวบทคัดสรรมิเพียงถ่ายทอดบาดแผลจากสงครามเวียดนามซึ่งทำให้ตัวละครแม่สูญเสียและถูกตัดขาดจากรากเหง้าในบ้านเกิด พร้อมทั้งต้องเผชิญกับอคติทางชาติพันธุ์ เพศ และชนชั้นเรื่อยมา แต่ในขณะเดียวกันก็นำเสนอกระบวนการเรียนรู้บาดแผลจากสงครามเวียดนามของลูกชายเควียร์ อันนำมาสู่การทำความเข้าใจสภาวะพลัดถิ่นของตนเองในฐานะชาวอเมริกันเชื้อสายเวียดนาม นอกจากนั้นตัวบทคัดสรรยังนำเสนอบาดแผลจากการมีเพศวิถีแบบเควียร์ของลูกชายอันนำมาซึ่งความรู้สึกผิดแผกในครอบครัวและชุมชนคนเวียดนาม และการถูกกดทับในสังคมอเมริกันที่ยังคงมีอคติต่อกลุ่มรักเพศเดียวกัน อย่างไรก็ดี แม้บาดแผลของแม่กับลูกชายเควียร์จะขับเน้นให้เห็นสภาวะ “ไร้บ้าน” อันเป็นประสบการณ์และอารมณ์ความรู้สึกที่ตัวละครแบ่งปันร่วมกัน แต่การเรียนรู้บาดแผลซึ่งกันและกันของตัวละครยังเป็นพลังสร้างสรรค์อันนำไปสู่การแสวงหา “บ้าน” อันเป็นพื้นที่ของการเยียวยาและเอื้อให้อัตลักษณ์พลัดถิ่นที่มีความแตกต่างหลากหลายสามารถดำรงอยู่ร่วมกันอีกด้วย
