It gives me great pleasure to introduce Christina Doublesin’s “The Deceptive Third Place: Comparing Steinbeck’s The Pearl to Modern Cell Phone Escapism.” Christina wrote this essay for her term paper in my World Literature II course in the spring of 2023. The assignment allows students to choose a text we have read for class to be the focus of a critical analysis. This paper examines portrayals of femininity within “Maiden in the Tower” tales. It analyzes the means by which maturation, sexuality, reproduction, and female agency contribute to the shaping of femininity. Via Petrosinella by Giambattista Basile, Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm, and Tangled by Disney, the paper explores how variations portray historically unique interpretations of ideal, female traits that defy common assumptions. The evolution of perspectives across “Maiden in the Tower” tales help us grasp how gender ideologies are communicated and how women are socialized.

Milton’s Satan in the seventeenth century was hardly viewed as heroic, yet in his resistance to supreme authority and bold transvaluation of values (“Evil, be thou my Good”) he emerges as a sort of tragic hero for many Romantics such as William Blake or later Herman Melville. Like Prometheus, the subject of Percy Bysshe Shelley great poetic drama, Satan is a figure of noble rebellion against omnipotent force. This project aims to examine how the image of the “modern body” is constructed, imagined, modified, and sustained by globalizing media cultures in France, Japan, and the US—investigating how factors of race, age, health, class, and gender overlap and intersect to create a vision of “ideal” beauty across different times and spaces. Previous research has focused on particular topics, such as the rise of cosmetic surgery in East Asia or the politics of modern American beauty parlors. Garcia's study looks at how integrating race and cultural-concordant doulas into the birth experience of African American women would impact outcomes. She found similar studies that provided strong evidence to support doula integration. However, most did not select study populations that appropriately reflected the African American women at increased risk of poor outcomes. As a result, Garcia designed a study that looked at race and cultural concordance between doulas and patients from a wide range of SES backgrounds and varying degrees of pregnancy risk.

When the meaning is not only cultural but when it is ambience- bound as well, appropriation is difficult but not impossible to achieve. Western conceptualizations of time and space are common topics to be queried within the field of Indigenous literary study. However, while the focus has been laid on temporal and spatial literary conventions, too little attention has been drawn to the conceptualization and norms around an identity forming element: knowledge. This paper is particularly suspicious of Western conceptualizations of “places for knowledge,” as this has very real consequences for how we understand and treat ourselves and others. King Lear'S "Poor, Bare, Forked Animal" And The Cross, Paul J. Stapleton

In William Shakespeare’s tragedy, King Lear describes the “unaccommodated man” as a “poor, bare, forked animal.” Lear’s comments are ostensibly about Edgar disguised as Poor Tom, but critics have detected in the passage a more general expression about human nature. The term “forked” is regularly glossed as “two-legged,” but there are philological problems with this reading. This paper, therefore, takes into consideration an alternate meaning for “forked” based on sixteenth-century usages that relate the noun “fork” to instruments of torture.
