This dissertation examines fictional responses to the events of September 11, 2001. It argues for the importance of one kind of fictional response, one which focuses on representing the feeling of "unsettledness" that can be one effect of trauma, with the aim of making that unsettledness itself a locus of a shared common experience. I posit that in articulating the events of 9/11 in the context of, in relation to, and as one in a series of traumas, violences, and histories, these narratives make the unsettlements shareable. Much of the comparative scholarship on the works of Gabriel García Márquez assumes the position that he was most significantly influenced by the works of William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway. However, beyond the citation of techniques shared extensively by other Modernists and dependence upon superficial comparisons between texts, the connections between García Márquez and these writers frequently remain tenuous. I suggest that to privilege Faulknerian or Hemingwayan readings of García Márquez is to overlook his position as a postcolonial Latin American novelist; I therefore consider in relationship with García Márquez the Irish writer James Joyce. In his work Nombre falso (False Name, 1975), leading Argentinian writer Ricardo Piglia (1941-2017) presents a double tale composed of the story of a search, and of the supposed results of the search: the short story Luba. According to the narrator, the short story is written by influential Argentinian author Roberto Arlt (1900-1942), but it is in fact a distorted copy of Russian writer Leonid Andreev’s (1871-1919) The Dark (T’ma, 1907). Piglia mixes real life with falsification to create his work, changing elements of the life of Arlt and modifying Andreev’s story. In this work, I revisit Piglia’s text, paying …

Implications surrounding body ownership prove to be an enduring struggle from their prevalence in ancient literary sources through more modern, contemporary works. I analyze the notions of body ownership and its lack thereof set forth in Ovid’s Metamorphoses and the Homeric “Hymn to Demeter” regarding the myth of Persephone. Then, I consider larger meanings through analysis of the following contemporary works, approached in terms of the narrators: Rita Dove’s Mother Love, Louise Glück’s Averno, A.E. Stallings’s “Hades Welcomes His Bride” and “Persephone Writes a Letter to Her Mother,” and D.M. Thomas’s “Pomegranate.”

As one of the first and most popular female-male authored conduct manuals of the seventeenth century, Dorothy Leigh’s The Mother’s Blessing is usually placed in the company of private, domestic literature. However, it does not sit comfortably there. Leigh claims to forget herself, as she rhetorically navigates her way through the constraining but enabling genre of the conduct manual. This paper examines textual and iconographic representations of antichrist personae in medieval Christian and Jewish manuscripts. Through a common language of polemics, Christians and Jews conflated antichrist personae to represent a more generalized category of apocalyptic antagonist that reflected the most significant temptations and threats to each respective religious community. Milton is not typically connected to the Middle Ages as much as to the later Enlightenment and the Romantic periods. Yet many distinctively medieval ideas can be seen in Paradise Lost, especially in the scenes that are related to the War in Heaven. Milton’s account of the war displays a medieval understanding of history in terms of typology in the drama of salvation. Particular details about the war itself such as St. Michael and Lucifer’s sword fight, Jesus’ eventual ending of the war, and the human characteristics of the fallen angels all have clear parallels in longstanding Christian poetic and …

In searching for a modern nation, Chinese women, in many political and literary works, were portrayed as both the emblem of China’s problems and the crucial solution. Despite growing scholarly interest in the entanglement between Chinese nationalist and feminist discourses, much remains to be explored, especially from the perspective of how Chinese people approached their own past and tradition. This dissertation examines poetry of Daʿd Ḥadād, Sanieh Ṣālḥ, and Ryāḍ Ṣālḥ al- Ḥsīn and the dominant role of place in their poetry. My dissertation is specifically interested in nonconformist modern Syrian poetry, especially women’s poetry and poetry focused on place and space. I approach my analysis from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective and hence will draw on theoretical frameworks from Arabic studies, poetry discourse, and theory of place. Flannery O’Connor described herself as “a Catholic peculiarly possessed of a modern consciousness” (HB 90). What makes her such a fascinating author is that she was almost uncannily sensitive to what Charles Taylor has analyzed in his large study A Secular Age as the fraught spiritual cross-currents of late modernity. Decades before Taylor described the modern secular social imaginary as a haunted space, O’Connor wrote in an essay that “if the South is hardly Christ-centered, it is most certainly Christhaunted” (MM 44). Ecofeminism has permeated the disciplines of politics, philosophy, science, and literature – all of which are embedded in the fiction of Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer and Ruth Ozeki’s All Over Creation. In this thesis, I consider the authors’ use of scientific evidence to engage readers with their rhetorical goals of protecting the systems of nature and gender. This research aims to assess the quality and potential of Google Translate when used as an English-to-Thai Machine Interpreting (MI) tool. The paper explores MI’s distinct definitions and terminology as well as its relationship to other relevant technologies, i.e. Machine Translation (MT), Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), and Text-to-Speech (TTS). Four five-minute English-language recordings from the European Commission's Directorate General for Interpretation Speech Repository were selected as samples for the MI to interpret. Human evaluation was used to evaluate the Comprehensibility, Accuracy, and Usability of MI with five final-year interpreting students and six professional interpreters performing as judges. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์เกี่ยวกับธุรกิจที่พบในหนังสือเรื่อง It’s Not About You ของ บ๊อบ เบิร์ก และ จอห์น เดวิด มานน์ โดยรวบรวมรูปคำแสดงอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์เกี่ยวกับธุรกิจในต้นฉบับเพื่อทำการศึกษา 50 ตำแหน่งแล้วเปรียบเทียบต้นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษกับบทแปลภาษาไทยในหนังสือ ยิ่งให้ยิ่งชนะ ซึ่งแปลโดย อมรรัตน์ ศรีสุรินทร์ เพื่อพิจารณาว่าในบทแปลยังพบอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์หรือไม่ อย่างไร ผลการวิเคราะห์อุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์เกี่ยวกับธุรกิจที่พบในตัวบทต้นฉบับ พบว่าสะท้อนอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ 4 ประเภทได้แก่ 1) A BUSINESS IS A HUMAN 2) A BUSINESS IS AN OBJECT 3) A BUSINESS IS A JOURNEY และ 4) BUSINESS IS WAR เมื่อเปรียบเทียบต้นฉบับที่มีอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์เกี่ยวกับธุรกิจกับบทแปล พบว่าบทแปลสะท้อนอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ 47 ตำแหน่ง แบ่งเป็นบทแปลซึ่งรักษากรอบมโนทัศน์ของอุปลักษณ์เดียวกันกับต้นฉบับ 46 ตำแหน่ง และบทแปลซึ่งเปลี่ยนกรอบมโนทัศน์ของอุปลักษณ์ไปจากต้นฉบับ 1 ตำแหน่ง ส่วนอีก 3 ตำแหน่งไม่พบอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ใน บทแปล การที่อุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ซึ่งพบในบทแปลส่วนใหญ่ยังคงเป็นประเภทเดียวกันกับต้นฉบับสะท้อนให้เห็นว่าอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์เกี่ยวกับธุรกิจค่อนข้างเป็นสากล นอกจากนี้ การที่บทแปลยังคงรักษาอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์เดียวกันกับต้นฉบับ 46 ตำแหน่งจาก 50 ตำแหน่งอาจเป็นเพราะผู้แปลใช้วิธีการแปลเชิงอรรถศาสตร์ (Semantic Translation) ตามทฤษฎีการแปลของ Newmark (1988) ทำให้ถ่ายทอดความหมายและอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ได้อย่างครบถ้วน ส่วนการที่บทแปลอีก 4 ตำแหน่งจาก 50 ตำแหน่งสะท้อนอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ที่ต่างไปจากต้นฉบับ หรือไม่สะท้อนอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์อาจเป็นเพราะผู้แปลใช้วิธีการแปลเชิงสื่อสาร (Communicative Translation) ตามทฤษฎีการแปลของ Newmark (1988) จากผลการศึกษาประกอบกับสมมติฐานการแปลเชิงปริชาน (Cognitive Translation Hypothesis, CTH) ของ Mandelblit (1995) ผู้วิจัยเสนอแนวทางการแปลตัวบทที่มีอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์สองแบบ ได้แก่ ใช้วิธีการแปลเชิงอรรถศาสตร์ตามทฤษฎีการแปล ของ Newmark (1988) …

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาแนวทางการทำบทบรรยายใต้ภาพสองภาษาเพื่อการสอนภาษาอังกฤษผ่านทางเว็บไซต์ Youtube และเพื่อวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยอื่น ๆ ที่อาจมีผลต่อการจัดทำบทบรรยายใต้ภาพในรายการต่าง ๆ ต้นฉบับที่นำมาศึกษาคือรายการ ภายใต้ช่องรายการ Sacross Peachii รายการ Loukgolf’s English Room (ผ่านทางช่อง GMM25) และรายการ Hello English (ผ่านทางช่อง NJ Digital) จำนวน 30 ตอนซึ่งออกอากาศในพ.ศ. 2560 การวิจัยฉบับนี้ได้นำบทบรรยายใต้ภาพของทั้งสามรายการมาเปรียบเทียบและวิเคราะห์รูปแบบบทบรรยายใต้ภาพซึ่งทำโดยมือสมัครเล่น การใช้บทบรรยายใต้ภาพในการช่วยสอนภาษา และการทำหน้าที่สื่อพลเมืองของรายการ นอกจากนี้ ยังมีการศึกษาวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยที่อาจมีผลต่อการจัดทำบทบรรยายใต้ภาพ อันได้แก่ ทัศนคติของผู้ผลิต กลุ่มผู้ชม แนวโน้มและกระแสของสังคม และ ผลตอบรับและข้อเสนอแนะของผู้รับชมรายการ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ทั้งสามรายการนั้นมีการจัดทำบทบรรยายใต้ภาพในรูปแบบที่ไม่เป็นทางการ โดยทั้งสามรายการมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปแบบของบทบรรยายใต้ภาพ สี ขนาด การเพิ่มข้อมูลและการใช้เครื่องหมายต่าง ๆ ภายในบทบรรยายใต้ภาพ โดยมีเป้าหมายหลักในการเพิ่มบทบาทและหน้าที่ของบทบรรยายใต้ภาพให้เป็นเครื่องมือในการสอนภาษาเพิ่มเติมโดยไม่ยึดตามหลักเกณฑ์มาตรฐาน สำหรับปัจจัยอื่นที่มีผลต่ออการจัดทำบทบรรยายใต้ภาพนั้น จากการศึกษาพบว่า ทั้งสามรายการต่างมีเป้าหมายเพื่อเปลี่ยนทัศนคติของคนทั่วไปในเรื่องการเรียนภาษา รวมทั้งทำให้ภาษาอังกฤษนั้นเข้าถึงได้ง่ายขึ้น โดยมีกลุ่มผู้ชมเป้าหมายเหมือนกัน คือการเข้าถึงคนหมู่มากให้ได้มากที่สุดและหยิบยกประแสสังคมในขณะนั้นขึ้นมาใช้ อีกทั้งยังมีการเปิดรับผลตอบรับและความคิดเห็นของผู้ชมผ่านทางช่องทางต่าง ๆ การศึกษายังค้นพบอีกว่า ทั้งสามรายการมีรายละเอียดของรูปแบบรายการที่แตกต่างกันออกไปตามเงื่อนไขและเจ้าของลิขสิทธิ์ตามกฎหมาย

สารนิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาทฤษฎีและกระบวนการทางศัพทวิทยา ตลอดจนระเบียบวิธีการประมวลศัพท์ และนำความรู้ที่ได้รับมาจัดทำประมวลศัพท์เรื่องระบบส่งกำลังรถยนต์ ประมวลศัพท์อันเป็นผลจากการวิจัยนี้มุ่งให้เกิดประโยชน์ในฐานะเครื่องมือสำหรับนักแปลในแวดวงยานยนต์ รวมทั้งเป็นแหล่งอ้างอิงสำหรับผู้ที่สนใจและบุคคลทั่วไป ในการประมวลศัพท์ครั้งนี้ ผู้จัดทำได้นำเอาทฤษฎีและแนวทางในการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์ที่นักศัพทวิทยาได้เสนอไว้มาประยุกต์ใช้ โดยแบ่งการดำเนินงานเป็น 6 ขั้นตอน คือ (1) กำหนดหัวข้อ วัตถุประสงค์ และขอบเขตในการจัดทำประมวลศัพท์ (2) ศึกษาทฤษฎี และระเบียบวิธีการทำประมวลศัพท์ (3) สร้างคลังข้อมูลภาษา ดึงและคัดเลือกศัพท์จากคลังข้อมูลภาษา (4) กำหนดมโนทัศน์สัมพันธ์ของศัพท์ทั้งหมด (5) จัดทำบันทึกข้อมูลศัพท์เบื้องต้น (6) จัดทำบันทึกข้อมูลศัพท์ ประมวลศัพท์เรื่องระบบส่งกำลังรถยนต์นี้ ประกอบด้วยศัพท์จำนวน 31 คำ โดยนำเสนอศัพท์ตามกลุ่มมโนทัศน์สัมพันธ์ ประกอบด้วยคำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษ ศัพท์เทียบเคียงภาษาไทย ประเภททางไวยากรณ์ หมวดเรื่อง คำนิยาม บริบท หมายเหตุ รูปศัพท์อื่น ๆ และข้อมูลอ้างอิง

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อแปลตัวบทที่คัดสรรจากหนังสือการ์ตูนเรื่อง อะเวนเจอร์ส : สการ์ เลต วิช (Avengers: Scarlet Witch) โดยเน้นที่การถอดความหมายของอวัจนภาษาโดยใช้การ วิเคราะห์หลากรูปแบบ (multimodal analysis) ร่วมกับกลวิธีการแปลตัวบทชนิดหนังสือการ์ตูนที่ เสนอโดยมิฮาล โบโรโด (Michał Borodo) 3 แบบ กล่าวคือ กลวิธีการแปลแบบลด (condensation) กลวิธีแบบเพิ่ม (addition) และกลวิธีแบบแปลง (transformation) ทั้งนี้เพื่อสร้างทางเลือกในการแปล สำหรับแก้ปัญหาด้านเทคนิคและการถ่ายทอดทางวัฒนธรรม ผลการวิจัยพบว่าแนวคิดของการ วิเคราะห์หลากรูปแบบและกลวิธีการแปลดังกล่าวช่วยให้แปลตัวบทที่คัดสรรได้สำเร็จ มีกรอบ ข้อความที่ใช้กลวิธีการแปลแบบลด 92 กรอบ แบบเพิ่ม 49 กรอบ แบบแปลง 104 กรอบ และที่ใช้ กลวิธีแบบตรงตัวหรือตีความ (ไม่ใช่กลวิธีแบบลด เพิ่ม หรือ แปลง) 339 กรอบ ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นว่า ในบรรดา 3 กลวิธีการแปลที่เสนอไปนั้น มีการใช้แบบแปลงมากที่สุด เพราะเป็นการผสมผสานกัน ระหว่างกลวิธีแบบลดและแบบเพิ่ม ไม่เน้นไปในทิศทางใดเพียงทิศทางเดียว มีความยืดหยุ่น เอื้อให้ ผู้แปลลดหรือเพิ่มบทแปลได้ตามความประสงค์ แม้ว่าการแปลตัวบทที่คัดสรรนี้จะสำเร็จและ ได้ผลดีเป็นส่วนใหญ่ ทว่ายังมีเนื้อหาในต้นฉบับบางส่วนที่แนวคิดและกลวิธีดังกล่าวยังไม่สามารถ แก้ปัญหาที่พบได้ทั้งหมด เช่นปัญหาทางเทคนิค เพราะยังได้บทแปลที่มีความยาวมาก ยังไม่สามารถ บรรจุลงในกรอบข้อความได้ อีกทั้งการแปลโดยใช้การวิเคราะห์หลากรูปแบบนั้นมีความเป็นอัต วิสัยทำให้การถอดความหมายจากต้นฉบับเดียวกันนั้นมีความเป็นไปได้หลากหลาย

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อศึกษาการแปลตัวบทที่เป็นหนังสือสำหรับเด็ก ประเภทหนังสือภาพที่มีแผ่นเปิด-ปิด เรื่อง Stephen Biesty's Giant Vehicle เพื่อวิเคราะห์ปัญหาและค้นหาแนวทางการแปลที่เหมาะสม และให้เข้าใจวัตถุประสงค์ของผู้ส่งสาร อันเป็นการทำให้ตัวบทแปลมีอรรถรสที่สามารถเทียบเคียงกับตัวบทต้นฉบับได้ ความรู้และทฤษฎีที่นำมาใช้ในการศึกษาครั้งนี้ประกอบด้วย ความรู้เกี่ยวกับวรรณกรรมเด็กที่ใช้รูปภาพ ความรู้เกี่ยวกับหนังสือภาพที่มีแผ่นเปิด-ปิด ทั้งภาษาอังกฤษและภาษาไทย การวิเคราะห์ตัวบทของคริสติอาเน นอร์ด และทฤษฎีหลากรูปแบบที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการแปลสื่อที่เป็นหนังสือภาพ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ความรู้และทฤษฎีต่าง ๆ ที่นำมาใช้ข้างต้นได้ช่วยให้ผู้วิจัยมีความเข้าใจในตัวบทต้นฉบับ รวมทั้งมองเห็นปัญหาที่จะต้องแก้ไข ทำให้ผู้วิจัยสามารถแปลหนังสือเล่มนี้ออกมาโดยใช้ภาษาที่เหมาะสม จัดเรียงเนื้อหาบนหน้ากระดาษโดยคำนึงถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างรูปภาพและตัวหนังสือ เพื่อให้เป็นไปตามจุดมุ่งหมายที่ผู้จัดทำตั้งเอาไว้

สารนิพนธ์เล่มนี้จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อศึกษาหากลวิธีการแปลนิยายภาพเรื่องซากา (Saga) ของ ไบรอัน เค วอว์น (Brian K. Vaughan) และฟิโอนา สเตเปิลส์ (Fiona Staples) เนื่องจากนิยายภาพ แตกต่างจากการแปลหนังสือทั่วไปตรงที่นอกจากการถ่ายทอดความหมายโดยคำนึงถึงความแตกต่างด้านสำนวนภาษาหรือวัฒนธรรมแล้ว ภาพก็เป็นองค์ประกอบสำคัญอีกประการหนึ่งซึ่งนักแปล ต้องพิจารณาด้วย จึงจำเป็นต้องปรับเปลี่ยนคำในบทแปลให้สอดคล้องกับภาพที่ปรากฎเพื่อให้ฟังดูเป็นธรรมชาติในภาษาปลายทาง ไม่ขัดกับสิ่งที่เห็นในภาพหรือสีหน้าของตัวละคร ความท้าทายอีกประการหนึ่งคือการจัดวางจำนวนคำในบทแปลให้พอดีกับกรอบคำพูดซึ่งมีขนาดจำกัดในต้นฉบับ ด้วยเหตุนี้ ผู้แปลจึงสนใจศึกษาประเด็นดังกล่าวโดยอาศัยทฤษฏีการแปลที่เกี่ยวข้องคือกรอบการวิเคราะห์และแปลนิยายภาพของเคลาส์ ไคน์เดิล (Klaus Kaindl) และใช้ทฤษฏีการวิเคราะห์หลากรูปแบบ (Multimodal Theory) ตามหลักการและแนวทางของมิคัล โบโรโด (Michal Borodo) ปรับเปลี่ยนวัจนภาษาจากต้นฉบับให้ได้บทแปลซึ่งเหมาะสมกับอวัจนภาษาที่ปรากฎเพื่อให้ได้บทแปลที่เหมาะสมกับภาพที่ปรากฎ ผลการวิจัยคือเมื่อปรับเปลี่ยนคำที่เป็นประเด็นในภาษาปลายทางตามประเภทการปรับเปลี่ยนที่โบโรโดได้แบ่งไว้ก็ทำให้ได้บทแปลที่เข้ากับทั้งภาพและบริบทในหน้านั้น อีกทั้งได้รับการปรับให้เหมาะสมกับพื้นฐานความรู้และวัฒนธรรมของผู้อ่านชาวไทย

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาปัญหาการแปลคำซ้ำ ที่พบในวรรณกรรมเยาวชนเรื่อง เมื่อคุณตาคุณยายยังเด็ก เล่ม 1 ประพันธ์โดย ทิพย์วาณี สนิทวงศ์ ณ อยุธยา จากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ โดยใช้ต้นฉบับ 10 บทเป็นกรณีศึกษา ปัญหาการแปลคำซ้ำยังไม่ได้มีการศึกษาอย่างจริงจังเมื่อเทียบกับปัญหาการแปลจากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษด้านอื่น ๆ ทั้ง ๆ ที่ไม้ยมกเป็นเครื่องหมายกำกับคำซ้ำที่มีการใช้อย่างแพร่หลายในภาษาไทยมาอย่างช้านาน นอกจากนี้กระบวนการซ้ำคำเพื่อสร้างคำใหม่ก็เป็นปรากฏการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในหลาย ๆ ภาษา และทั้งภาษาไทยและภาษาอังกฤษก็มีการซ้ำคำเช่นกัน สารนิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาขั้นตอนในการแปล วิเคราะห์ปัญหาในการแปล ตลอดจนนำเสนอแนวทางการแก้ปัญหานั้นเพื่อให้ได้บทแปลที่มีความสละสลวยทางภาษาและได้อรรถรสทัดเทียมกับต้นฉบับ ผู้วิจัยศึกษาทฤษฎีการแปลและแนวคิดต่าง ๆ อันได้แก่ แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับคำซ้ำภาษาไทย แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับคำซ้ำภาษาอังกฤษ ประเภทของความหมายของคำซ้ำภาษาไทย ประเภทของความหมายของคำซ้ำภาษาอังกฤษ แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับการแปลคำซ้ำ ทฤษฎีการแปลแบบยึดความหมาย ทฤษฎีสโคพอส และการวิเคราะห์วาทกรรม เพื่อช่วยในการวิเคราะห์ปัญหาที่พบในการแปล และค้นหาแนวการทางแก้ไขการแปลคำซำ หลังจากที่ได้ศึกษาทฤษฎีและแนวคิดข้างต้น ตลอดจนลงมือแปลบทที่เลือกมาศึกษาโดยยึดทฤษฎีการแปลแบบยึดความหมายเป็นสำคัญ ผู้วิจัยพบว่า แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับความหมายของคำซ้ำและแนวทางการแปลคำซ้ำของอาจารย์และผู้รู้หลาย ๆ ท่าน มีประโยชน์อย่างยิ่งในการพิจารณาคำซ้ำในแง่มุมทางโครงสร้างและการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางความหมายต่าง ๆ จนสามารถนำไปสู่การแปลคำซ้ำได้จริง

ข้อดีข้อด้อยจากนโยบายที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการล่ามในที่ประชุมของประชาคมอาเซียนเมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับสหภาพยุโรป, ณุพัฒน์ คู่ศรีบรรจง

การประชุมในบริบทของประชาคมอาเซียนทวีจำนวนตามการพัฒนาและกรอบความร่วมมือที่เพิ่มขึ้นในภูมิภาคนี้ แต่อุปสรรคในการสื่อสารภาษาอังกฤษยังคงเป็นประเด็นสำคัญที่ลดประสิทธิภาพการประชุม งานวิจัยนี้ได้เก็บข้อมูลจากการสัมภาษณ์ผู้เกี่ยวข้องในการประชุมในบริบทอาเซียน พบว่าการกำหนดให้ใช้เฉพาะภาษาอังกฤษในที่ประชุม บ่อยครั้งกระทบต่อความเข้าใจเนื้อหาการประชุมและการมีส่วนร่วมของผู้เข้าร่วมจากแต่ละประเทศ โดยเฉพาะการประชุมในระดับปฏิบัติการมักได้รับผลกระทบมากที่สุดเพราะต้องเผชิญปัจจัยที่ทำให้การสื่อสารภาษาอังกฤษเป็นอุปสรรค เช่น ปัจจัยด้านงบประมาณจ้างล่ามที่มีจำกัด ความสามารถใช้ภาษาอังกฤษของผู้เข้าร่วมประชุมที่หลากหลาย เป็นต้น ผลการวิเคราะห์บทสัมภาษณ์ยังชี้ว่าการจัดจ้างล่ามเพื่อลดอุปสรรคด้านการสื่อสารในที่ประชุมที่เหมาะสมที่สุดสำหรับประชาคมอาเซียนคือใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษากลางในการล่ามสู่ภาษาอื่นๆ ถึงกระนั้นก็ยังติดประเด็นเรื่องนโยบายของประชาคมอาเซียนเองที่กำหนดให้ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาทางการภาษาเดียว ไม่สนับสนุนให้มีการจ้างล่าม ซึ่งแตกต่างโดยสิ้นเชิงจากสหภาพยุโรปที่สนับสนุนหลักพหุภาษานิยมหรือนโยบายภาษาทางการและภาษาปฏิบัติการที่หลากหลาย ปัญหาดังกล่าวทำให้ผู้เกี่ยวข้องในการประชุมในบริบทอาเซียนต้องหาทางออกให้การสื่อสารในที่ประชุมเกิดขึ้นได้ด้วยวิธีต่างๆ ตามอัตภาพ นอกจากนี้ยังมีความเป็นไปได้น้อยมากที่ประชาคมอาเซียนจะจัดตั้งหน่วยงานอำนวยการล่ามในที่ประชุมเหมือนที่สหภาพยุโรปมี
