From archaeology to papyrology the study of the Ancients through the lens of tomorrow advances daily. Such was my experience with the revolutionary breakthrough of multi-spectral imaging (MSI) on a remnant from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D.: A charred, millennia-old piece of papyrus (PHerc 817) from Herculaneum, Italy treating the famous Battle of Actium in 31 B.C. The works of such well-known authors as H.C. Andersen and Karen Blixen are relatively accessible in the original Danish, but have the disadvantage of failing to reflect contemporary spellings, syntax, and word usage common in present-day Danish. Like all languages, Danish is constantly changing and the passage of over a century has certainly left its mark on Danish literature. Unlike, older Danish works, contemporary Danish literary works are relatively hard to come by, which poses a problem for those interested in learning Danish as its written and spoken today. When America experienced the Great Depression during the 1930’s, a large number of people struggled to survive each day. Countless men and women were unemployed, and therefore, had no means of providing for their families. The migrant workers of the west were hit the hardest, and their former lives of simplicity became a serious fight for existence. At this same time, however, a portrait photographer in San Francisco, named Dorothea Lange, captured city conditions with her camera. In Tongan culture, music is very much a part of the natural expression of the people. In the Western tradition, musical experience is often limited to a setting in which an isolated group of performers presents a work to the general public, who observe as an outside audience. Thanks to the BYU multi-spectral images, scholars around the world have been able to access the Herculaneum scrolls without having to travel to Naples. Those images greatly facilitated scholarship by both their readability and availability. Because of the availability of the multi-spectral images, the necessity and benefit of having other related resources available in digital from became apparent.

In 1999 CPART began working with the Biblioteca Nazionale in Naples to create a database of the unique materials which they possessed. These are the remains of the papyri which were found in the archaeological excavations of Herculaneum. Herculaneum was a town along the Bay of Naples which was destroyed in the same eruption that buried Pompeii. However, the eruption destroyed these two towns in different ways. Whereas Pompeii was buried in layers of pumice and ash, Herculaneum was buried in a super-heated landslide known as a pyroclastic flow. These different modes of destruction led to different modes of preservation. …

Swahili is the most extensively spoken language of the hundreds of Bantu languages in sub-Saharan Africa. It is considered to be the closest language in Africa to a native lingua franca and is essential for effective communication in the East Africa region. As the national language of both Tanzania and Kenya, the importance of Swahili is significant, prompting the NSEP, National Security Education Program, to list Swahili as one of the languages critical to national security.

The research for this grant formed the basis for my Honors Thesis, which was completed August 1997. The completed thesis was a total of 133 pages in length and parts of the thesis will be submitted for journal publication. The project took approximately 300 hours to complete and involved one research trip to UCLA in addition to extensive support from interlibrary loan at BYU.

The purpose of this research was to measure the rise of the individual consciousness in Japan over time as expressed through anime, or Japanese animations. To illustrate this, I compared group dynamics and the role of the individual as expressed through two anime: Space Cruiser Yamato (Uchuu Senkan Yamato), from 1976, and Akira from 1989.

When I began my study of the Mount Vesuvius region, I wanted to learn if the current policies for the future evacuation of the volcano were appropriate and to understand the opinions of the people whom they affect. I also wanted to investigate the preparatory measures other than the evacuation procedures and find out how they were progressing. Thirdly, I hoped to delve into the criticisms of the current policies. Once I had gathered my information, I planned to publish a paper evaluating those facets and bringing the problem to the eye of a new audience.

The primary objective of my project was to explore the relationship between customary law and lynching in a Mayan town in the Guatemalan highlands. Customary or traditional punishments occur with much greater frequency than lynchings, but the latter occurs often enough that it has come to be seen as somewhat of a phenomenon in post-conflict Guatemala. In exploring the relationship between the two, the central question I sought to answer was how two similar crimes that occurred in the same community could be punished by customary law on the one hand and lynching on the other. In the latter half of the fourth century, a Roman Christian by the name of Pontius Meropius Paulinus established a monastic center at the community of Nola in southern Italy. When Paulinus arrived at Nola in the autumn of 395 AD, the sanctuary consisted of a single basilica that housed the tomb of St. Felix, a local martyr, in addition to a number of Christian and pagan tombs. In 23 B.C. Horace published three books of Odes. The longest of these poems, Odes 3.4, has been the object of much scholarly attention, largely because of its complexity. In approaching this closely-studied poem I have sought to examine a facet which has gone virtually untouched by the scholarly literature thus far: the poem’s allusions to the mythological figure Orpheus. A musician and poet of legendary power, Orpheus was able to control nature and even overpower death with his bewitching song. Centuries of excavation around the south slope of Vesuvius has proven the volcanic eruption of 79 AD to be a boon to Roman archaeology and history. As multiple sites have been uncovered, archaeologists have viewed a snapshot in time. As a result, a great deal has been learned about the city of Pompeii and the surrounding area. It has become an essential resource and textbook example which Roman studies can scarcely avoid. The original purpose of my research was to develop a conservation plan for Maseria de Carolis (MDC), an archaeological site on the north slope of Mt. Vesuvius, Italy. Professional conservation of archaeological sites is a relatively new area of study. While conservation principles were first discussed in the 19th century, it was not until the 20th and 21st centuries that real steps were taken in developing principles for the conservation of structures, and conservation of structures became its own official sub-group of conservation, determined by the American Institute of Conservation (Matero 1993, 1). I began this research project with the intention of briefly surveying all of the major literature of post-revolutionary Francophone North Africa and extracting the domestic political themes from each text. I soon realized that this was an extraordinarily difficult if not impossible task for several reasons: 1) The corpus of texts is extremely large and without adequate bibliography; 2) The corpus of texts is largely unavailable with many relevant texts out of print; 3) The political themes treated in these texts are not ordinarily accessible through brief survey because of their gothic, abstract, and deeply symbolic nature.

For my ORCA project, I said I would assemble 42-48 activities Swedish language learning activities to enhance the curriculum for BYU’s Swedish 202 course. I created 46 and adapted seven others for a total of 53. I planned on 12-15 quizzes, but 10 turned out to be more appropriate for the semester. I planned on 3 tests, and I created 3 written and oral tests, as well as a final. Additionally, I organized readings and made dozens of blackboard homework assignments.
