This thesis is an examination of the autobiography of Parley P. Pratt in light of current American autobiography research, intended to assert its worthiness for greater consideration by scholars of American culture. The findings suggest that the Autobiography of Parley P. Pratt is comparable to other works now included in the canon of American autobiography such as Jonathan Edward's "Personal Narrative," Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography and Henry David Thoreau's Walden. Critical theories on the above autobiographies are applied to the Autobiography of Parley P. Pratt in order to show its applicability to the current dialogue of American autobiography. Finally, the …

Three general questions concerning literature have been addressed by the writers considered in this thesis: What constitutes a work of literary art? What ought to be valued by Latter-day Saints in a literary work? How should criticism be conducted by Latter-day Saints? To the first question, five basic answers have been proposed: significant form, uplifting thought content clothed in decorative form, typological symbol, ikon (as the word is used by C S lewis in An Experiment in Criticism), and capacity for helping the reader achieve a kind of "negative capability." English and Japanese are very different from each other in tems of their structures. And consequently no one would call the present translation of the Japanese Book of Mormon a low rank-bound translation.
However, a substantial amount of grammatical categories of English such as number, redundant subject for Japanese, pronominal expression, and the passive voice which is not used so often in Japanese as in English, are introduced in the translation. The improper placement of subject, verb and object also serves as a cause of foreign tones. Thus the present translation has more factors of Formal-Equivalence translation than those of …

Legends grow, stories spread, symbolism multiplies, old ideas generate new ideas, and gradually these stories and symbols become the universal property of mankind. The legend grows and is used over and over again, changing, fusing, and transmuting. One of these legends is the story of the Wandering Jew. The problem of this thesis is: What textual relationship does the Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints bear to the Bible, King James Version?
As a preliminary hypothesis, it has been assumed that there are phrases and clauses in the Doctrine and Covenants similar enough in construction and meaning to some of the phrases and clauses in the Bible to permit selection of samples from both that will parallel each other.
