In April 2023, a trial excavation was conducted at Gush Halav (Permit No. A-9490/2023; Map ref. 241702/770293, 241574/770025), prior to the laying of a sewage line. The excavation, on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and funded by the Peleg-Hagalil corporation, was directed by A. Kleiner, with the assistance of Y. Yaakobi (administration) and Y. Tzur (district inspector, scientific consultation). The excavation was conducted inside an olive grove, at the bottom of the northwestern slope of the Gush Halav hill. Terracotta figurines are proposed as a particularly useful object corpus through which to access social identities in Hellenistic Babylonia. Cross-cultural interaction between Greeks and Babylonians has traditionally been the primary interest of scholars researching this society, and figurines were often recruited as evidence for the opposition of ethnic identities. In this work, a new approach to the figurines is proposed, which deemphasizes the categorical rigidity of typology and substitutes a flexible methodology of accessing multiple inter-object entanglements. A particular case study of “nude heroic” figurines (which are often considered evidence for display of cultural difference) is explored in detail, utilizing …

Social Networks And Cross-Cultural Interaction: A New Interpretation Of The Female Terracotta Figurines Of Hellenistic Babylon, Stephanie Langin-Hooper

In the study of the Hellenistic period in Babylon, cross-cultural interactions between Greeks and native Babylonians have been primarily interpreted using colonialist theories of Hellenisation, domination, and cultural isolation. This paper finds, however, that such theories cannot adequately explain the types of cross-cultural combinations seen in the archaeological record of female Hellenistic Babylonian terracotta figurines. The forms and functions of these terracotta figurines were substantially altered and combined throughout the Hellenistic period, resulting in Greek- Babylonian multicultural figurines as well as figurines that exhibited new features used exclusively in Hellenistic Babylonia. In December 1993, a salvage excavation was conducted in Haifa, at the site of Horvat Rosh Mayim (Romema neighborhood, map. ref. 2005/7440), under the direction of Y. Solomon, in advance of planned residential construction at the site. Two excavation areas (A, B) were opened. Area A, located at the northwestern edge of the tell and along its descending slope, revealed four stratigraphic layers.

In October 1980, a salvage excavation was conducted at a site near the southern bank of the ʻAda Stream channel, close to Or ʻAqiva (map. ref. 19401/71144), under the direction of A. Zigelman and S. Yankelevich. A section of a structure belonging to the settlement was uncovered, which the excavators dated to the Persian and Hellenistic periods.

In December 1965, an excavation was conducted in Kibbutz Lohamei HaGeta'ot (map ref. 2091/7625), following leveling of the ground in the parking lot of the Ghetto Fighters House museum. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by Y. Ben Yosef, with the assistance of Sh. Moskowitz (surveying and plans). The site was previously damaged as a result of construction work, the planting of trees, illegal kurkar mining and the plundering of graves.

In June 1951, an excavation was conducted along the Bet She'an–Hamadiya waterline, which passes through the slopes of Tel Iztabba (map ref. unknown). The excavation was directed by N. Zori. The remains of buildings that were dated to the Hellenistic period were exposed, consisting of walls built of basalt stones and silt floors. Two built cisterns were found. In one of the buildings was a large number of loom weights made of clay, and two fingers of a palm made of bronze, which belonged to a huge statue according to the excavator. In 1948 and 1949, excavations were conducted in Yafo, in the vicinity of St. Peter's Church, under the direction of P.L.O. Guy (map ref. 176/662). In 1948 the remains of a building were exposed, as well as millstones, many fragments of pottery vessels including lamps and pipes, and bronze rings, coins and an iron cannonball, apparently from the time of Napoleon. About 40 finds are registered in the National Treasures (pottery, metal, stone and glass vessels) most of which were dated to the Early Islamic period and the rest to the Hellenistic, Roman, Crusader and Ottoman periods.
