The primary purpose of this work is to call attention to the existence of Latin words in the Greek New Testament and to present an objective study of them. As a corollary to this study, the impact of Graeco-Roman culture upon Judea in terms of these words, their synonyms, and related words is pointed out. Glimpses of the background of the New Testament figures afforded through this study lend perspective to the New Testament pages.

That type of the participial construction which has been the main object of the present investigation is known among English-speaking scholars by the name of the "ab urbe candita construction." This designation is derived from one of the outstanding examples of the type of expression in view. Ab urbe candita, "from the year of the founding of the city": thus the Romans were accustomed to reckon their chronology. The work of second-year Latin in this country centres, as a rule, around the study of Caesar's Commentaries and the Latin Grammar.
